Here it is, the final entry in my #construction series on the #bike path connection in south #Ottawa! It took many months, but the connection between the Osgoode Link Pathway and the Sawmill Creek Pathway is done, the #conefest and fences removed and officially opened. My #video was shot today and shows the pedestrian and cycling #bridge, the switchback under the bridge and around the west side to join the Sawmill Creek Pathway.

This connection is a real boon for #biking in this part of town, as #bikes can now skip #cycling on busy roads and having to wait at traffic lights, bypassing it all. It is faster, safer and should encourage more people to bike.

Has Your City Passed the ‘Bikeability Tipping Point’?

When cities hit a certain level of bikeability, they enter a virtuous cycle where more infrastructure inspires more residents to become rider-advocates who, in turn, advocate for more infrastructure.

A whopping 183 American communities achieved a score of 50 or higher on PeopleForBikes annual City Ratings this year... And when a city clears that 50-point threshold, the authors of the ratings say that its local bike culture has firmly taken root — and that every new roadway improvement will inspire more improvements, rather than a fierce fight against a car-dominated status quo.

"Once you've hit 50, your city probably has a pretty good low-stress bike network," said Martina Haggerty, the senior director of local innovation at PeopleForBikes. "[That's] not to say that there aren't still improvements to be made [but it] probably means that more people are riding bikes in those communities because they feel safe and comfortable. And when more people start riding bikes, those people tend to become advocates for better bike infrastructure and for pro-bike policies, which, [in turn,] will get more people riding."

I really love the murals around town. This one is in Roscoe Village, at the intersection of School and Damen.

A big day in #Ottawa for #biking today, as we officially got the #Rideau River Ped #Bridge officially opened. Three city counsellors, two MPPs, one MP and several others were on hand to cut the ribbon and set the #bikes rolling.

Credit goes to counsellors Shawn Menard and Riley Brockington for prying the bridge away from the contactor and get it into service for summer.

Today we travelled to the #CityOfBath, which is just over an hour away by train, making it suitable for a day trip. We cycled to our #RailwayStation and left our #bikes there. In #Bath, we only used pubic #buses and walked everywhere; we were lucky that although today had been planned well in advance, the weather was wonderful.

After a quick visit in the morning to the #UniversityOfBath, we spent most of our time wandering around the centre of the #city. The #RoyalCrescent has houses on its perimeter, curved in a #CircularArc, overlooking a park on the lower slopes.

The #RiverAvon flows through the city and here, you can see it and also one of the famous #bridges, called #PulteneyBridge, which has shops over the span.

There's a nice walk along a stretch of the #river and here you can see the bridge from which the last #photograph was taken. I like the reflection of the river on the underside of the #arch.

#BathAbbey is made of the same stone that most of the #city is made and it gives a uniformity and harmony giving #Bath a unique character.

Ich warte immer noch...

RIP Natenom.

"Amplified calls for street safety could be among the most powerful legacies of e-bike rebate programs — not only in Denver, but in the many US states and cities now considering launching their own. If so, they could finally put to rest questions of whether to upgrade bike infrastructure before or only after many residents are riding, a challenge that has bedeviled US cities."https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-02-09/denver-s-e-bike-rebate-program-has-a-hidden-power

Last week, I took my old #bicycle to a #cycling charity shop that refurbishes old #bikes and then sells them at a low price to anyone who can't afford a brand new one. To me that's a much better way of giving it a new lease of life than to take it to a recycling centre where anyone who picks it up will have to spend more money repairing and replacing worn out parts to make it road worthy again. They also train volunteers to become bike mechanics.
