Deadly Flooding in Central and Eastern Europe Wreaks Havoc From Austria to Romania

Downpours from low-pressure system Storm Boris led to some of the most serious flooding in almost three decades across Central and Eastern Europe.

Austria, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic have all been experiencing extreme rainfall. A state of emergency has been declared by the Polish government, reported CNN.

According to Polish news agency PAP, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has secured $260 million in emergency funding for the country’s hardest hit regions.

The electricity and hot water were cut off for thousands in the Czech Republic when authorities closed heating plants due to the floods. Near the country’s border with Poland, 280,000 residents in Ostrava were left with no hot water, CNN Prima said.

Over 250 Dead after Landslides Wreak Havoc in Kerala’s Wayanad | Vantage with Palki Sharma

Two deadly landslides occurred in the Wayanad district of the Indian state of Kerala on Tuesday. The landslides took place in the middle of the night, and buried people who were sleeping in their homes. At least 250 people have died and 200 are missing. Search and rescue operations are underway, but they have been slowed by the torrential rains in Kerala. Meanwhile a political blame game has begun over the landslides.

While feral domesticated cats are a big problem in a lot of places (including NYC) and need vigorous #TNVR / #TNR or relocation, #WildFelines need to be protected! In #Brazil, #conservationists try to save one of the world’s most #endangered #cats

"- #Muñoa’s #Pampas cat, a small wild feline, is endemic to the Pampas grasslands that sprawl over southern Brazil, #Uruguay and northeastern #Argentina.

"- With fewer than 100 individuals left in the wild, experts call Muñoa’s pampas cat one of the most endangered felines in the world and warn it go extinct within 10 years as its natural habitat is cleared for #cropland.

- #Conservation plans to save the species include switching from #monocultures to extensive ranching that preserves the natural #grasslands, creating a #captivebreeding program, and developing a trinational conservation agreement.

"- Recent #floods in the Brazilian state of #RioGrandeDoSul, where many Muñoa’s Pampas cat sightings have been recorded, have currently halted all local #conservation efforts, putting the future of this feline at risk."

DeSantis Declares Emergency Over Floods After Cutting Stormwater Funds

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency on Wednesday for five counties due to heavy flooding in southern Florida just the day after he cut $205 million in stormwater, wastewater, and sewer projects from the state's budget.

Heavy rains caused by a disorganized tropical system have inundated southern and western Florida since Tuesday, bringing more than a foot of rain in places and disrupting road and air travel throughout the area. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC), part of the National Weather Service, put southern Florida under a rare 4 out of 4 high risk of flooding on Thursday as rains were expected to continue there, and warned that it could be "locally catastrophic."

The rains "transformed roads into canals and caused water to seep into homes," CNNreported, while a tow truck driver in Fort Lauderdale told The Associated Press that abandoned cars everywhere reminded him of "zombie movie." ...

#Storm #Monica swept across the country from 08 March 2024 bringing extremely #heavy #rain. Some areas in the south recorded more than 300 mm of rain in 48 hours. Since 09 March, the rain has triggered severe flooding in the departments of Gard, Ardèche and Var.
Update March 13

The Connexion reports:
The body of a man was found yesterday evening (March 12) in the Ardèche department, three days after a hydroelectric plant worker went missing in the area.

It was discovered by hunters and relatives of the 73-year old who disappeared on Saturday evening during flash flooding.

The body was found close to a micropower station along the Eyrieux river, where the man was working during Saturday evening's storms.

Authorities believe it is most probably the body of the missing man, however rescue workers and police forces were unable to reach the location of the body last night but planned to make a fresh attempt this morning.

It now brings the death toll from the weekend's storms and high waves to seven - six in the south of France and one in the west.
