Before there were drive-throughs, there were car hops. I remember going to A&W as a family. You would pull into a stall and turn on your headlights. When your food came, the tray would hook onto the window. Just like the movie American Grafitti

We also had White Spot, which had a long tray that passed through the car and hung on the two front side windows.

Family dining was quite car-centric back then but both of these chains are still around and still family-owned. Of course, they've changed. WhiteSpot is now Triple Os outside of BC. We still go to A&W when on road trips - echoes of pleasant childhood memories of root beer and onion rings.

I was reading Ask a Manager and someone was talking about preferring phone calls to video calls for scheduled events. A discussion revolved around how people 'do' an appointment call. With video calls, I click on the link then wait for the event to start. With a phone call, I get my stuff ready, use a headset and do stuff while waiting for the call time.

Which do you prefer, phone calls or audio-only video calls and does computer access make a difference? I will not use my phone for app-based calls even though I can, of course. My phone is linked to my laptop so I can use it to answer.

I was reading about storage units. How cheap they are to put up and how many people are filling them. I get the impulse. We have a lot of stuff despite going through and getting rid of stuff. An old laptop that’s got less oomph than a Raspberry Pi, wedding dress, etc. That said, if we were to move into a smaller place, we would be getting rid of things rather than storing them.

I am always looking for savory snacks that have protein. I was watching a video and saw this food item from TikTok where a cheese slice is cut up then microwaved on parchment paper to create a crispy puffy snack. Even though I microwave Bennie’s cheese treat to make it puffy, I was leery of trying it for kraft slices. It ended up similar to a goldfish cracker with a different ending mouth feel and was quite good! I can see myself doing this for a mid-afternoon snack.

Our domestic holidays are usually long drives as we take our kayak and visit friends. We use our GPS for the drive home just so we get an idea of what time we’ll get home. Today traffic was a mess both into Calgary on Hwy 1 and out of Calgary on Hwy 2. Still we were surprised when our Nav said the road was closed, there would be a delay and the detour was being calculated. It turned out a driver had rolled their car and the road going north was closed for well over an hour. We were glad we had the GPS on.

The Provincial Summer Games are being held in our city so I’ve decided to volunteer most mornings. I’ve just finished helping with tennis and will be helping with beach volleyball (7:30 start) for the rest of the week. I picked a venue within walking distance because I could🙂We don’t have public transit or I would have widened my scope to include those venues.

Other sporting events I’ve volunteered for include dog agility, dog confirmation and car track racing.

Despite living here for over 20 years, I’m still surprised by how quickly I can run errands and how many people I just run into. I decided, 10 minutes before my grocery pickup time, to go to the bottle depot. While at the bottle depot, I met a neighbour I know from dog walking past their place. We chatted while we waited and even with the wait and construction I made my pick-up slot. Since it was nice out, I thought I would take Bennie for a walk in the park where I met another neighbour. All before lunchtime!
