#soap

If traipsing round tropical rainforests teaches you anything, it’s that it’s the outsiders who wash once a day and cover themselves in anti-perspirants that smell bad, not the local people. Despite washing infrequently, and never using deodorants or cleansers, tribal people living in the most basic of places don’t suffer from bad body odor.So why not? How is it that most people living in in modern society become socially-unacceptably smelly and greasy after just a day or two of not washing, but those living soap- and hot-water-free in the tropics manage to stay clean?

By washing and applying deodorants, which tend to work by removing or masking the odour-producing bacteria, we alter the skin microbiota. Ammonia-oxidising bacteria are a perticularly sensitive group of bacteria, and they are slow to repopulate, so they are the worst-affected by the hurricane of chemicals that bombards them every day. The trouble is, without ammonia-oxidising bacteria, the ammonia we sweat out is not converted into nitrite and nitric oxide, chemicals which play some fundamental roles not only in regulating the running of human cells, but also in governing our skin microbes. Without nitric oxide, the corynebacteria and staphylococci that feed on our sweat can run wild. Changes in the abundance of corynebacteria in particular seem to be responsible for the bad body odour that we are all so keen to avoid.

The irony is, then, in washing with chemicals and using deodorants to ensure that we smell nice, we kick off a vicious cycle. Soap and deodorants kill off our ammonia-oxidising bacteria; no ammonia-oxidising bacteria means disruption to our other skin bacteria; the altered composition means our sweat smells unpleasant; and therefore we must use soap to clean up the mess, and deodorant to mask the smell.

From the book; 10% human, by Alanna Collen

All you need is water-only and for good measure a cloth to rinse the skin with, do that daily.
Maybe it will feel strange and scary at first but you’ll be thoroughly clean and your skin will get a naturally pleasant scent.
Soap and perfume industry have got you hooked, like a drug addict, time to break the bond and live free 😀

#Shaving #Soap #Greece #Kepkinh

Today my order from Kepkinh out of Greece arrived, a shaving soap smelling of Pineapple, and an ointment of olive oil and beeswax, to treat my dry skin on my feet and legs. If it works i will order a bigger jar ;-)
But the post: It is about that soap, that is the tied up pink package, I know the maker (via Etsy) and have bought samples and soap from him, first of-coarse the samples to see if i liked them (I did) as it proved he makes great shaving soap! He advertised some discounted ones and Pineapple was a sent i did not have yet, so I ordered.
Now to see how the smell develops when in use, soaps sometimes lose the smell when wet, some will intensify, and some will change, so where this one goes? We will see (Ill report back in the comments).
Monday morning i will use it for the first time, dry the sent is very mild, it is there, but not 'American In Your Face', from experience (I already have the soap EVE from him) his formula is fantastic, smooth, buttery texture when on the face, and very nice feeling skin after use. The only thing i did not like in the EVE is that when shaving with it (so when it becomes wet) the small of the soap changes, it comes alive with a strong anise smell, not unpleasant, just not the smell i like, and bought the soap for.
It is a bleeding shame the transport costs are so steep out of Greece, otherwise i would order some more of his soaps.
Highly recommended!

Oktober-Knipserei

Bilder ohne Ende also.

Kurzer Besuch in Würzburg.

Morgens vom Rad runter.

Reingeplumbst.

Rausgefischt.

Das Leben findet einen Weg.

Im Baum, vorm Haus. Buchfinkin.

Leicht herbstlich.

Stiller Weiher mit Reiher.

Herbstgeruch.

Tragik am Straßenrand. Nein, das ist nicht meine. Wirkte auch recht günstig. Vom Holz her. Vielleicht ein frustrierter Anfänger?

Von wegen „die laufen ewig“. Jeden Tag müssen die neu gestartet werden.

Der Wunnenstein.

Nebelwege.

So holt man morgens Brötchen. Neuerdings.

Syrisches Essen. Falafelo, Heilbronn.

Sonnenaufgang am Leuchtmannshof, Neckarwestheim. Vom Rad runter.

Zeugs.

Lecker italienisches Essen mit extra Banane. Der Chef meint es gut mit mir.

Pikant.

Verblasst. Mitte September mit noch etwas mehr Farbe.

Komisch geformt.

Nebelfahrt.

Schön beleuchtet. Die Burg in Lauffen am Neckar direkt am Neckar …

Herbstwege.

Weinberge bei Heilbronn am Neckar.

Trailmarkierungen im Wald.

Überall Wein.

Burgruine Weibertreu, Weinsberg.

Noch ein letztes Glas.

Schluss für heute.

The Sock Experiment
Who hasn't wanted to run some sort of #sock #experiment? That's when you are looking at your #socks and #thinking, "Didn't I just buy these socks? And already one of them has a hole in it? Should I fix it? Is it worth my time? Should I just buy new socks? How much does it cost to own socks anyway? Is it worth my time to 'darn' these socks? How many uses should I even get out of a pair of socks? By the time I am done with these socks, will washing them have cost me more than their initial purchase price?"

I have many more #questions that all fall under the #rubric of #TheSockExperiment. How do I even run this sock experiment? I need new socks. I impulsively bought new socks the other day. They were #expensive, I think, but if I wear expensive socks a hundred times and cheap socks twelve times, the "expensive" socks are actually a better #bargain. How will I ever know? I have to run the sock experiment. I have to do it at least once to establish a #baseline.

What are the #materials required? What is the #data to be gathered? What is the #methodology? First are the socks. I have them and I have the receipt. Next, I think I need a mesh #laundry bag. I will keep these socks separate from all the others in their own special bag. Maybe this will affect the outcome, I don't know. I'd have to run another, different sock experiment to find out. I just don't want to be losing any socks I am experimenting on. What data? When I wore them and when I washed them. That's simple. I will note when put them on, and when I take them off, they go into the mesh laundry bag. Each pair gets one wearing between washes. That's easy.

It may take several days for me to accumulate enough black clothing to justify a "dark" cycle of laundry, and I have back up socks for that time. So sometimes these socks will be #idle, just laying there, #dirty. But that seems to be normal for socks. I will have to #inspect the socks after each use cycle. I will #alternate washing them inside-out and inside-in. I don't know how I will keep track of that. I don't know if it makes a difference. I would have to run another sock experiment to determine that.

What kind of data am I looking for? How long socks last, mostly. I will have to come up with some way of estimating how much it costs to run a pair of socks through the laundry. If it's something like a #penny, and I do it 100 times, then that's a dollar per sock. But who knows? What do you go by? Weight? How many #gallons of #water are in my #washing #machine? I have no idea. How much #soap am I using? Am I wasting soap? I have no idea. I have to run a soap experiment. There must be rough figures out there. And I haven't even considered the #dryer.

More questions than #answers.
