Hard to believe the #iOS is old enough to qualify for #retrocomputing. I bet @Hank G ☑️ would like it tho.

The Chargie is now available for iOS too, to limit battery charging to 80% or whatever you want to set it too

I've been using a Chargie for the last two years on my Android phone (my wife is now using it) and loved that it is a hardware device that shuts off the charging at a user set percentage. It does this by monitoring the battery and temperature via the app running on the phone.

This type of battery charge limiting was exclusively the reserve of rooted phones before the Chargie came along.
Yes iOS 14.5 has optimised charging, but that still charges the battery up to 100% which is a full charge cycle. So finally the Chargie is now available for iOS devices, and I've just ordered mine.

With the glued in non-replaceable batteries of today this device at $35 plus shipping is just worth it to me. The manufacturing has improved the quality further to prevent corrosion on the PCB inside which just means the device should be a once-only purchase.

How to install DroidStar on iPhone to Rx/Tx on D-STAR, DMR, Fusion YSF/FCS, NXDN, P25, M17, and IAX (AllStar client) over UDP for Ham Radio digital modes

Android users have had the Droid-Star app for this purpose for quite a while but recently a beta version for iOS has surfaced which can be tried by ham radio operators on the iPhone. The video below takes you through the steps to install it via the Test Flight app.

Just to note for DMR you need to have also created (under SelfCare on the Brandmeister website in your Profile) a password by HotSpot security after enabling that setting. This password must be set inside this app's settings too. The Tx button is a toggle button so you need to kerchunk it (tap twice) to register in the Talk Group.

Interesting that this iOS version is a branch off the DUDE-Star Github project and that main branch can also compile to work on Linux, Raspberry Pi and MacOS (with Windows executable only downloads under Releases in the project).

Magic Earth - Completely Free and Privacy Respecting Turn-by-turn navigation, OpenStreetMap, Crowd-Sourced Traffic, 3D maps, Satellite maps, Offline maps for iOS and Android

Magic Earth uses OpenStreetMap data and a powerful search engine to offer you the optimal routes for driving, biking, hiking, and public transportation. They don't track you, nor do they profile you. They don't trade in your personal data, and they don't collect it (as stated in the Apple app privacy statement).

Interestingly it also has an AI function built in if you activate the camera to use it as a dashcam, with Driver Assistance warnings such as avoiding collisions, lane departure warnings, stop and go assist, etc.

It also has support for Apple CarPlay as well as Apple Watch.

If there are any incorrect map issues you can fix those yourself using OpenStreetMap.

Apple redirects Google Safe Browsing traffic through its own proxy servers

«We believe that this is a simple matter of standing up for our users. Users should know when their data is being collected and shared across other apps and websites — and they should have the choice to allow that or not. App Tracking Transparency in iOS 14 does not require Facebook to change its approach to tracking users and creating targeted advertising, it simply requires they give users a choice.»

Having said that, it’s interesting to see Apple focus on enhancing user privacy as much as they can. And setting up a proxy server to filter Google Safe Browsing traffic just so Google cannot users’ browsing activity will be a welcome move for a lot of users.

insporation* iOS Beta App for Diaspora is here

Today I am proud to announce that the #insporation* project started by @Jonne Haß now has a beta #iOS app.

insporation* is a #Flutter based #diaspora client. Based von upcoming diaspora 0.8 API.
