Government urges ‘free world’ to oppose warrants against Netanyahu and defence minister for war crimes in Gaza

Israel has urged what it called “nations of the civilised world” to refuse to implement any international criminal court arrest warrants issued against its leaders.

Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor of the world’s top court, announced on Monday that his office had applied to a pre-trial panel for arrest warrants for three senior #Hamas officials, as well as the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin #Netanyahu, and his defence minister, Yoav #Gallant, for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Hamas attack of 7 October and the ensuing seven-month-old war in Gaza.

It says prosecuting these crimes

  • Murder as CaH and a war crime (WC);
  • Taking hostages as WC;
  • Rape and other acts of sexual violence as CaH and also WC in the context of captivity;
  • Torture,
  • Other inhumane acts, as CaH in the context of captivity;
  • Cruel treatment,
  • Outrages upon personal dignity, as WC in the context of captivity.

⬥ against #Netanyahu, and #Gallant:

  • Starvation of civilians as a method of warfare as WC;
  • Wilfully causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or health, or cruel treatment as WC
  • Wilful killing, or Murder as WC;
  • Intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population as WC;
  • Extermination and/or murder, including in the context of deaths caused by starvation, as CaH;
  • Persecution as CaH;

The International Criminal Court announced that it is filing arrest warrants for colonial prime minister Benjamin #Netanyahu and colonial war minister Yoav #Gallant, on the grounds that they have committed war crimes in their aggression on #Gaza. The charges leveled against them include intentional starvation, extermination, and persecution.

The Court is also issuing arrest warrants for the leader of Hamas in Gaza Yahya Sinwar, Commander-in-Chief Mohammed Deif, and head of #Hamas political bureau Ismail #Haniyeh.

The US to Israel: You only have few more weeks

"Our actions will not take weeks but months," barked the Israeli defence minister #Gallant today before being rebuked by the US Secretary #Blinken:

"I don't think you have months."

Additionally, Blinken stressed on the need to avoid additional internal displacement of Gazans from their homes, especially in the south.

Both #Netanyahu and the army CoS assured that less will be moved in the south when the operations expand there, and there are still needs to depopulate more parts of Northern #Gaza.

The US was briefed today on how Israel plans to proceed their war in Gaza.
