Good post on Mastodon where my reading of the vibe is, “people think Mastodon is too complicated”.
That’s additive to the other #social #media consolidation and weaponization/#disinformation fun.
Like #Twitter #X lawyers v #Meta, #MuskVirus vs. Zuck who Likes it - in a cage match.

Oh, I hear there’s a new Russian troll farm coming to an Internet near you!

But in the real world of man-made global disaster unfolding before our eyes, as other people “those people” issue ‘fake news’.

The CIA's 3-Decade Effort to Mold the World's Views (1977)

This is a six-part series on CIA media influence and propaganda by veteran NY Times intelligence reporter John M. Crewdson which ran from December 25--30, 1977, in the New York Times. The initial article sets the scene:

For most of the three decades of its existence, the Central Intelligence Agency has been engaged in an unremitting, though largely unrecognized, effort to shape foreign opinion in support of American policy abroad.

Although until recently the C.I.A. counted a number of American journalists among its paid agents, with a few notable exceptions they do not appear to have been part of its extensive propaganda campaign.

Instead, the agency has channeled information and misinformation through once‐substantial network of newspapers, news agencies and other communications entities, most of them based overseas, that it owned, subsidized or otherwise influenced over the years.

The C.I.A.'s propagandizing appears to have contributed to at least some distortion of the news at home as well as abroad, although the amount and nature of misinformation picked up by the American press from overseas is impossible to determine.

regardless of how much #disinfo there is in this, i'm still glad i'm not letting strangers and unaccountable institutions of imbalanced power jab me.
... and doubly so when reconsidering the likes of: https://youtube.com/watch?v=G8Us_UCc5lY
possibly one of the very most important interviews, especially vitally important these days... if not already a little late... though, dont believe you cant put the toothpaste back in the tube. there are ways.

adds to the suspicion/incredulity/distrust from overhearing another middling insider say something like "once the terrorist thing wears off, we're going to have everybody running scared of a disease without symptoms".

Local news is drowning in ‘pink slime’ ahead of US election

Partisan sites with no obvious revenue model and opaque owners have sprung up this year

... The Kenosha Reporter is one of hundreds of local news outlets that have proliferated in recent years, particularly in the run-up to the US presidential election. Despite presenting themselves as apolitical, many are what researchers have dubbed “pink slime”: outlets that push low-quality, partisan material through their own sites and social media pages. ...

Facebook bans QAnon across its platforms

Facebook said Tuesday that it is banning all QAnon accounts from its platforms, a significant escalation over its previous actions and one of the broadest rules the social media giant has put in place in its history.

Facebook said the change is an update on the policy it created in August that initially only removed accounts related to the QAnon conspiracy theory that discussed violence, which resulted in the termination of 1,500 pages, groups and profiles. ...

“Starting today, we will remove Facebook Pages, Groups and Instagram accounts for representing QAnon. We’re starting to enforce this updated policy today and are removing content accordingly, but this work will take time and will continue in the coming days and weeks,” Facebook wrote in a press release. “Our Dangerous Organizations Operations team will continue to enforce this policy and proactively detect content for removal instead of relying on user reports.”

Interesting observation on response:

Reacting to the partial ban in August, QAnon groups and followers shifted tactics to evade moderation, dropping explicit references to Q, and “camouflaging” QAnon content under hashtags ostensibly about protecting children.
