Wenn einem die Allmacht zu Kopf steigt ...
Schon die Umbenennung des Google Mutterkonzerns in Alfabet strotze vom Größenwahn der Verantwortlichen - es gebe nun keinen Buchstaben für den Google nicht zuständig wäre. Jetzt ist Facebook diesem Beispiel gefolgt - der Konzern wird nun Meta heißen - und alle Kritik, die an Facebook geübt wurde, möge sich wie der Name in Luft auflösen. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp und Oculus sollen unter diesem Namen zusammengefasst werden.
Metaverse
Nach der Vorstellung von Mark Zuckerberg werden sich die Menschen künftig in einem von ihm geschaffenen Metaversum bewegen - und dort nur noch die von ihm gewollten Geschäfte tätigen und ihre Freizeit verbringen. Dafür stellt das Metaversum Horizon Home, virtuelle Marktplätze, Gaming-Plattformen und Arbeitsräume zur Verfügung. Um sich im Metaversum zurechtzufinden soll einem der VR-Headset von Oculus Quest helfen. Natürlich wird dafür auch Facebooks Firma Oculus Quest umbeannt in Meta Quest.
Apropos Oculus: das Bundeskartellamt hatte Facebook die Zusammenführung der Nutzerdaten von Oculus und Facebook verboten. Deshalb wird seit September 2020 Oculus Quest in Deutschland nicht mehr verkauft. Die "Datenvereinigung" von Facbook und WhatsApp hatten die deutschen Behörden verschlafen. Auch Oculus fordert z.Zt. die Zustimmung zu einer Zusammenführung der Daten mit Facebook. Das soll bei Oculus Meta Quest ab Januar 2022 nicht mehr erforderlich sein.
Regulierung kann also erfolgreich sein, wenn sie nur mal die Zähne zeigt - genauso wäre auch eine gerechtere Besteuerung möglich, wenn die Politik sie wollte. Aber machen wir uns nicht vor, um die Macht der Internetgiganten wirklich zu brechen, kommt man an einer Zerschlagung der Konzerne nicht herum - und dieses wird sich in den USA abspielen müssen.

"I ultimately broke down and bought a $300 #Oculus Quest 2," he said. Oculus is a virtual reality #company owned by Facebook but with its own customer #support system.
Sherman contacted Oculus with his headset's serial number and heard back right away. He plans to return the unopened device, and while he's glad the strategy worked, he doesn't think it's fair.

The Problem with Facebook and Virtual Reality
Excellent insight here from Ben Thompson: VR is a deliberate and all-consuming activity, making Facebook's Oculus acquisition puzzling, as Facebook's strength is mindless and casual usage .
Thompson goes on to say that Mark Zuckerberg doesn't understand the strength of his own company; he desperately wants Facebook to be a platform – an immersive experience that consumes your life – rather than what it is: A thing you do for a few minutes at a time in between other, more important things.
I mean, sure, people will get sucked into social media binges for hours at a time but nobody INTENDS to do that. It's procrastination. Whenever anybody opens the Facebook app (or Instagram, or Twitter), they INTEND to do it just a minute or two.
Zuckerberg doesn't understand his own company. I suspect Sheryl Sandberg might be running the whole shebang. This could result in a crisis for Facebook pretty soon.
Thompson says Apple is poised to do better with VR and augmented reality than Facebook/Oculus is. I add Google as well; they're another company that people use interstitially, but Google, unlike Facebook, understands that about itself.
