UK records 4,950 excess winter deaths amid cost of living crisis
New official data shows that a significant amount of people lost their lives last winter - and it seems as is a lack of governmental legislation and poor insulation could be to blame.
Stark new figures estimate that some 4,950 excess winter deaths last year in the UK were down to people living in cold and damp homes.
New official data from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition says those figures were recorded during winter 2022/23.
The Warm This Winter study also found that, when the average winter temperature in the UK drops below four degrees centigrade, the level of excess winter deaths sky-rockets.

Kremlin using coal subsidies to force Russian passports on residents in occupied Kherson Oblast
Moscow-installed illegal occupation authorities in Kherson Oblast are offering coal subsidies for heating purposes, but only to those residents who became Russian citizens, the Ukrainian military's National Resistance Center reported.
As part of its forced passportization strategy, Russia creates special incentives oriented toward residents in occupied Ukrainian territory to adopt Russian passports. At the same time, those Ukrainians who refuse Russian citizenship are often threatened with deportation or being forcibly mobilized into the Russian military.

To date, #China, #Turkey, #Iceland and #Japan are the leaders in developing deep #geothermal #energy, #heating more and more city districts and greenhouses. In #Germany, the city of #Munich enjoys inexpensive geothermal heating and has set its sight on using the technology to make the sector climate neutral by 2035.
The German government is also looking at further developing deep geothermal energy to create a nationwide climate-neutral heat supply by 2045. Deep geothermal energy could generate around 300 terawatt hours of heat annually from an installed capacity of 70 GW — more than half the future heat demand of all buildings. According to analysis by six German research institutes, generating heat with deep geothermal energy costs less than three euro cents per kWh.

In 50 minutes I'll get another 5 stèr of firewood; my Cuccinota eats much more logs than my old Plamen (simple cast iron stove). only since October it was fed with 7 stèr of spruce, cherry and beech wood logs, produces much more ash as well but, am happy that my neighbour Helmuth is gonna help me wheelbarrowing the wood down to my little barn...
