On 12 November 2014, after a ten-year journey through the Solar System and over 500 million kilometres from home, Rosetta’s lander Philae made space exploration history by touching down on a comet for the first time. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of this extraordinary feat, we celebrate by taking a look back over the mission's highlights.

Rosetta was an ESA mission with contributions from its Member States and NASA. It studied Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko for over two years, including delivering lander Philae to the comet’s surface. Philae was provided by a consortium led by DLR, MPS, CNES and ASI.

#CME PEPPERS #EARTH WITH HARD PROTONS: Something just exploded on the farside of the #sun --and it managed to touch Earth. Debris from the blast emerged in the form of a full halo CME, shown here in a movie from the Solar and Helospheric Observatory (SOHO):

Shock waves at the leading edge of the CME are accelerating protons and spraying them throughout the #solarsystem. Some of those protons are raining down on Earth right #now. NOAA's GOES-18 satellite is monitoring an intensifying S1-class solar radiation storm rich in "hard protons" with energies > 100 MeV.

Hard protons are good at charging spacecraft bodies, fogging their cameras, and causing reboots of onboard computers. Indeed, you can see a hint of the "fog" in the SOHO movie above. Each speckle is a hard proton striking the spacecraft's digital camera.

Europe's Solar Orbiter (SolO) #spacecraft is going to get good data on this event. A NASA model of the CME predicts that it will directly hit SolO on July 24th.

A #mini-planet orbiting in the frigid #outer reaches of the #solarsystem has a #Saturn-like #ring of #dust and #debris that #defies the rules of #physics, a new study has #revealed.

The planet in question is called #Quaoar and it's the #seventh largest of the known #dwarf #planets of which #Pluto is the #king. #Discovered in #2002 and about 697 miles wide (1,121 kilometers), Quaoar is one of the so-called #trans-Neptunian objects, small planets orbiting #beyond the solar system's outermost planet #Neptune.

Residing in the #KuiperBelt, the doughnut-shaped ring of rocky and icy debris in the outer solar system, Quaoar is a proud owner of its own #moon, the 100-mile-wide (160 km) #Weywot. And a recent observation campaign revealed that it also has a ring of material in its orbit.

That by itself wouldn't be so special. The gas giant Saturn is known to possess a whole series of rings. #Jupiter, Neptune and #Uranus also have some. One other trans-Neptunian object — #Haumea — has been found to have a ring, and the space rock #Chariklo that orbits between #Saturn and #Uranus also has one. So what exactly sets Quaoar's ring apart?

Quaoar's ring is at a very unusual #distance from its parent body. In fact, before astronomers discovered Quaoar's ring in observations from several telescopes conducted between 2018 and 2021, they had thought that it was impossible for a ring to exist at such a distance. With a radius of about 2,420 miles (3,885 km) from Quaoar's center, the ring is too far away from the dwarf planet that its gravity should no longer be able to keep the material dispersed. Instead, it should coalesce under its own gravity and form another moon, just like Weywot. By not having done that, the ring has breached what astronomers call the Roche limit, the first known ring around a #celestial body to have done so.

"What is so intriguing about this discovery around Quaoar is that the ring of material is much farther out than the Roche limit," Giovanni Bruno, an astronomer at Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) and one of the authors of the paper, said in a European #Space Agency (ESA) statement. "As a result of our observations, the classical notion that dense rings survive only inside the Roche limit of a planetary body must be thoroughly revised."

The ring was discovered during a series of occultations, essentially eclipses, when Quaoar passed between Earth and several more distant but much brighter stars. When an occultation occurs, the light of the background star temporarily dims. The effect is only visible to very sensitive telescopes and is frequently used to detect exoplanets orbiting stars in our Milky Way galaxy, which is why ESA's exoplanet hunter Cheops was among the telescopes watching these Quaoar occultations.

When astronomers analyzed the data, they realized that apart from the main dip in the background stars' brightness, they could detect two smaller drops. Since drops occurred before and after the main occultation, respectively, the researchers thought that Quaoar must be surrounded with a ring.

Several Earth-based telescopes also observed the occultations with similar results, but Cheops' data were particularly valuable as they proved that the odd dimmings were not caused by the effects of Earth's atmosphere.

It’s unclear how difficult this #wall of #hot #plasma will make #interstellar travel, once we decide to go beyond Mars and eventually leave our #solarsystem, but considering both Voyager 2, and even Voyager 1 (also launched in ’77) made it through OK, it seems like at least our interstellar ships wouldn’t be too negatively affected. Although it’s unclear how the plasma wall will affect we #biological #beings. Regardless, the discovery is exciting because, as JPL notes, this is the “cosmic shoreline… where the environment created by our #Sun ends and the vast ocean of interstellar space begins.”

Because in SF there are often Double Star/Sun systems I've always tried to visualize it in my mind....have never really been able to but maybe just got a glimmer of how they would move...not necessarily from this article, but it got me thinking. :)

Just to recall that Hoogerbeets gained international fame after predicting devastating earthquakes in #Turkey and #Syria last month.

The first week of March will be "extremely critical", says Frank Hoogerbeets. Hoogerbeets, who makes his forecasts based on the movements of celestial bodies, posted a video on YouTube on Monday warning that "the first week of March will be extremely critical".

"A convergence of critical planetary geometry around 2 and 5 March may result in large to very large seismic activity, possibly even a mega-thrust earthquake around 3-4 March and/or 6-7 March", it is stated in the description of the clip.

In the video itself, the seismologist claimed that the strength of the alleged upcoming earthquake "could be over 8 on the Richter scale."

The affected area could stretch for thousands of kilometers, from the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Kuril Islands in the Russian Far East, all the way to the Philippines and Indonesia, Hoogerbeets said.

"I'm not exaggerating. I'm not trying to create fear. This is a #warning," insists the scientist, who works at the Geometric Survey of the #SolarSystem (SSGEOS).

The head of the Kamchatka branch of Geophysical Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Danila Chebrov, questioned Hoogerbeets' predictions and described him as an "amateur".

The connection between the motion of planets in the solar system and seismic activity on Earth "is quite weak, and it is problematic to use it as a main prognostic tool," Chebrov explained.

On February 3, Hoogerbeets posted a tweet that read: "Sooner or later a magnitude 7.5 earthquake will occur in this region (South Central Turkey, #Jordan, Syria, #Lebanon)." Three days later, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria. The disaster caused the death of more than 50,000 people, and strong aftershocks continue in the region to this day.

Dutsch's seismologist Hoogerbeets has made predictions over the years that have not come true.

Commenting on his work earlier this month, Susan Huff of the US Geological Survey insisted that no scientist "has ever predicted a major earthquake".

Huff told NPR that the direct forecast for the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria was just a coincidence.

"It's a stopped clock that's right twice a day, basically," she said.

A #new #analysis of #Hubble #data has clinched it: There's too #much #light in the #space around the #SolarSystem.

Not much extra light, to be sure. Just a subtle, ghostly glow, a faint excess that can't be accounted for in a census of all the light-emitting objects.

All the stars and galaxies surrounding the #Solar #System – and zodiacal light, aka dust on the Solar System's plane – none of these can explain what astronomers are now calling "ghost light".

After analyzing 200,000 Hubble #images and taking thousands of measurements in a project called #SKYSURF, an international collaboration is sure the #excess light is real.

And, moreover, they can't quite account for it. There are possibilities, but none of them have been confirmed. Not yet, anyway....
