(...) [E]enderde van de Europese begroting gaat naar landbouw, terwijl de landbouwsector goed is voor 1,4 procent van het bbp. Van alle EU-landen krijgt Frankrijk het meest: een zesde. En raad eens wie daar vooral van profiteren? Grote boerenbedrijven. Want hoe meer hectares je hebt, hoe meer je krijgt. 20 procent van de boeren vangt 80 procent van de subsidies. Geen wonder dat het aantal kleine boeren afneemt.

De grootste klant van Europese landbouwfondsen is de agribusiness. (...)

De boerenprotesten in Frankrijk, Duitsland, België en elders zijn eerder een goed getimede driftbui van een gepriviligeerde boerenklasse dan de desperate noodkreet van keuterboertjes die elke koe bij naam kennen en bij donker aan de keukentafel verzuipen in Brusselse paperassen over pesticiden of eco-heggen. Er zíjn amper keuterboertjes meer. En het gros zit niet in West-Europa, maar in landen als Roemenië. En wat die paperassen betreft: hoezo is het slecht dat je zakenlui die bakken geld krijgen stevig controleert? (...)

Brusselse ambtenaren weten dit natuurlijk. En ze haten het. Als je ergens in Europa keiharde kritiek wil horen op het Europese landbouwbeleid, moet je naar Brussel. Elke keer als de Europese begroting voor zeven jaar moet worden uitonderhandeld maken deze „zeikerds” voorstellen om minder landbouwfondsen aan de agribusiness te geven en meer aan kleine boeren die het wél nodig hebben (en aan anderen die vanwege ‘marktwerking’ amper rondkomen, zoals verplegers of onderwijzers). Maar zulke hervormingen komen er nooit door.

Waarom niet? Omdat de lidstaten over de begroting beslissen, niet Europese ambtenaren. En nationale leiders staan allemaal onder druk van de agrilobby. Ze weten: als ik grote boeren de waarheid vertel – namelijk dat je niet én kunt profiteren van de vrije landbouwmarkt én je hand kunt ophouden bij de overheid als het even tegenzit – stemmen ze volgende keer op Bardella [lijsttrekker van Marine Le Pens radicaalrechtse Rassemblement National]. [D]e agrilobby heeft de politiek bij de strot en drijft kiezers in de armen van radicaalrechts. De kleine boer heeft het nakijken. Het Europese landbouwbeleid moet op de schop, en wel nu.

So, if a plant breeder like Morton develops his own variety of lettuce and the lettuce matches any of the traits of a patented variety – whether it be color, the curliness of the leaf or a trait that makes it conducive to a particular climate – the breeder is technically in violation of patent law and risks getting sued by the patent owner. There are utility patents for “Brilliant White Cauliflower”, “Pleasant Tasting Melons”, “Red Lettuce” and “Heat Tolerant Broccoli”. Some patents are so extensive in what they cover that they are nearly 50 pages long.

“They are essentially just doing obsessive-compulsive descriptions of plants and laying claims to those traits, so if anyone else has those traits, they are in violation,” Morton said.

The US patent system was designed to encourage competition and promote innovation. However, the patent system has opened the door for large corporations to patent thousands of plant varieties and traits, locking up genetic resources seed savers have relied on for generations.

Today, just four companies – Bayer, DowDupont/Corteva, ChemChina-Syngenta and BASF – control over 60% of the seed market worldwide.

Mensen over de hele wereld lijden honger en worstelen met inflatie. Tegelijkertijd behaalden de vijf grootste handelaren in agrarische grondstoffen hun hoogste winsten ooit. In 2022 verdrievoudigden hun winsten ten opzichte van de periode 2016-2020. Defending paradise has never been so dangerous

#Palawan appears to be an idyllic tropical island. Its powder-white beaches and lush forests have made it one of Asia’s hottest new tourist destinations. But for a tiny network of environmental crusaders and vigilantes trying to protect its spectacular natural resources, it is more akin to a battlefield.

DELIKADO follows Bobby, Tata and Nieves, three magnetic leaders of this network, as they risk their lives in David versus Goliath-style struggles trying to stop politicians and businessmen from destroying the Philippines’ “last ecological frontier”.

It is a timely film emblematic of the struggles globally for land defenders as they are being killed in record numbers trying to save natural resources from being plundered by corporations and governments. As the world faces its sixth-mass extinction and the climate emergency worsens,

It is also a unique expose of President Rodrigo Duterte’s “war on drugs’ in the Philippines, which has claimed thousands of lives and the International Criminal Court of Justice has said may amount to a crime against humanity. DELIKADO shows the drug war is used as a tool for politicians to control the levers of economic and political power.

DELIKADO offers a story of courage and resilience to inspire others into action.

The battles being led by Bobby, Tata and Nieves in DELIKADO are the same as those being fought by local communities in #Brazil, #Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of #Congo and elsewhere around the world where #corporations and #governments are seeking to plunder increasingly valuable natural resources.

They are being killed for trying to stop #mining, #agribusiness and #logging. Many of the deaths occur in remote villages or rainforests. The victims are often from indigenous communities and the killers are rarely caught. The powerful masterminds behind the murders virtually never. All these factors are in play in Palawan.

The film has a special relevance and urgency in highlighting the perilous fate of Palawan, the most biodiverse part of the Philippines and home to two UNESCO World Heritage-listed natural wonders.

Palawan, due to its remoteness, had long avoided the corrupt development seen around the rest of the Philippines over recent decades as the country’s population has boomed. Palawan’s rainforests are among the biggest, oldest and most diverse in Asia. They are home to thousands of animal and plant species.

But few people know it is on the path to environmental destruction. Politicians and businessmen are destroying Palawan at an unprecedented rate to extract its forests, minerals and fish. #Urbanisation and #tourism are other pressures leading to the depletion of Palawan’s natural resources.

Once the last of Palawan’s majestic #Apitong, #Kamagong, #Ipil and other endangered trees are cut down, these species will be forever lost. With the demise of these #forests will come the loss of Palawan’s incredibly diverse range of endemic animal species. Some of the world’s largest butterflies - bigger than an outspread human hand - can only be found in Palawan’s rainforests. They are also home to seven-foot monitor lizards, turquoise and violet-winged peacocks, giant grey bear cats, bulging-eyed geckos as long as an adult’s arm, flying squirrels and dirt-brown “horned” frogs.

Centuries-old #traditions and #customs for the tribal people still living in the forests will also disappear if the forests are destroyed. Other communities living in towns and villages outside of the forests will face floods and droughts when the forests are gone.
