$600 checks are a “crime,” says the pope’s favorite economist

I've only recently discovered Mariana Mazzucato, who seems to be establishing herself as a celebrity economist these days. She also has a fan in Pope Francis:

A conversation with economist Mariana Mazzucato on the case against Scroogenomics

... I sat down, virtually, with the brilliant economist Mariana Mazzucato to talk about the relief plan and the problem underlying it: a loss of faith in government action that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: People don’t believe in government action, so government isn’t empowered to act, so people believe less and less in government.

Mariana was recently name-checked by Pope Francis as his favorite economist (along with Kate Raworth). No big deal, right? Mariana teaches at University College London. She’s written important books like The Entrepreneurial State and The Value of Everything, making a case for rewriting some of the basic thinking of economics. And she is a rare instance of a scholar who follows her work out into the world, helping policymakers implement her theories. There is much to learn from her.

On the just-passed US COVID relief package:

MARIANA: A one-time check of $600 is nowhere enough, for three reasons.

First, for the citizens in question, this amount will simply not be enough to allow people to access their basic human rights to food, shelter, and caring for their loved ones.

Second, the economy will not benefit by this meager relief. As Keynes taught us, boosting aggregate demand is critical for economic growth. Given the dire situation on disposable income, this relief will not help the economy get back on its feet.

Third, the money does exist: the government has simply decided to spend it elsewhere: for example, on corporate bailouts and defense spending.

It’s a crime and should be rectified as soon as possible. And if America truly wants to “lead” the world, then match the relief packages in other countries.

ANAND: I recently discovered that Pope Francis has a favorite economist — and it's you. What is it like being the pope's favorite economist [as he disclosed in his new book, “Let Us Dream”]?

MARIANA: As a very unreligious person, it feels great but uncomfortable. The funny thing is, he actually read my book a year ago and wrote an open letter in Argentina saying capitalism is screwed, but there's a book that tells us what to do. The Vatican, in some ways, has been talking about the common good for a long time. But there's no real equivalent for that concept in economics. ...

https://the.ink/p/austerity

I'd argue that the concept exists, but is largely ignored, and is hard to measure: commonweal and social welfare.

Despite misgivings about the institution myself, I like this Pappa, and have for a while.

Why do the multi-billionaire mainstream media owners use straight out lies to convince their readers to vote #Tory, or at least NOT vote #Labour?
Very brave & famous actor Greg Wise exposes all: The elite are treated differently than the majority; hundreds of Brits with £BILLIONS hidden away offshore to avoid paying tax, & the #HMRC (tax office) under the Tories is turning a deliberate blind eye to this, even though they KNOW who these people are!
There is enough money owing in tax, just from these super rich people, to more than wipe out ALL our countries debt, & with enough left over to reverse the #austerity cuts. What do the HMRC do under the Tories, if not going after the super rich? They go after the #workingClass common people, like plumbers with dawn raids, imprison mothers who claim too much tax credit by accident, etc. The ONLY political party which has been trying to bring this super rich mans #corruption to light, & close these corrupt tax loopholes, is the #LabourParty; & THATS why "secretly right wing" papers:

  1. "THE SUN" (owned by Rupert Murdoch, personal wealth over $21.5 BILLION),
  2. "THE DAILY MAIL" (owned by Jonathan Harmsworth, 4th Viscount of Rothermere, personal wealth well over £1 BILLION),
  3. "THE EXPRESS" (owned by Richard Desmond, personal wealth over £2.6 BILLION) or
  4. "THE TELEGRAPH" (owned by The Barclay Brothers, personal wealth over £8 BILLION)

ALL told their readers ridiculous lies to do ANYTHING to stop them voting for Labour. And their manipulations paid off - despite the Tories only gaining 269K more votes than 2017 (where they lost their majority) with a total of 13.9 million in 2019, the vast majority of voters voted AGAINST the Tories with 17.93 MILLION votes for opposition parties, BUT (& this is where the lies paid off) the right wing media convinced enough people to NOT vote Labour, & hence split the vote to ineffectiveness, that despite getting considerably less than half the votes, the Tories got more than enough seats to form a majority government... The readers of these papers simply got played by the owners of the papers they read, so the owners could keep their Tory government, & keep avoiding paying tax... It's that simple.

Feel free to fact check for yourself, I encourage it - its the provable truth.

the opening line:

Government cuts to social services could be killing large numbers of vulnerable people in England, a health journal has said, as new figures show 2015 saw the biggest increase in the national death rate for decades.

"could be"....

COULD BE!?

are you fucking kidding me!? it's been blatant for years. it's been an intentional savage cull of the sick & poor! this downplaying is a slap in the face to all those of us who've had to endure the work capability assessment assaults and frauds and impoverishments and attempted murder.

this is not the first time #rt have been complicit in the downplaying / #coverup of this, #averybritishgenocide, i recall an episode of #goingunderground where one of the guests tried to suggest there had only been 4 people who had had a little trouble with the system, and the host and other guest's efforts to correct that callous obnoxious flippant falsehood were far lacking of pointing out that tens of thousands have been killed, and immense unnecessary nation-harming millions more suffering.

wakey wakey #uk, there's mass murder happening here.

#austerity #genocide #democide #workcapabilityassessment #workfare #fittowork (there's even a band about it: https://fittowork.bandcamp.com/ )

can we at least put those responsible in prison? will we ever see justice for this genocide/democide? when there were 13 people dead and you could see their faces and names, i thought this would alert the public. when the number of dead rose past 3,000, i thought for sure people would start paying attention. when the number of dead rose past 10,000, i thought for sure people would start paying attention. when the number of dead rose past 80,000, i thought for sure people would start paying attention. when the number of dead rose past 120,000, i thought for sure people would start paying attention. wakey wakey people of great britain. at least when it was thatcher more people seemed aware what a monster they had in power. where's the satire and news to hold these monsters up infront of the public's eyes? wasnt the internet supposed to make us more aware of what's going on? are we at a million yet? if not, give it another year or two. will you pay attention then?

#separationisthepathtodestruction so look after your #community and all those in it. #revel #boldly in #compassion and #solidarity / #socialcohesion. your lives may depend on it.

#Greece ’s #health #crisis: from #austerity to #denialism

Greece’s economic crisis has deepened since it was bailed out by the international community in 2010. The country underwent the sixth consecutive year of economic contraction in 2013, with its economy shrinking by 20% between 2008 and 2012, and anaemic or no growth projected for 2014. #Unemployment has more than tripled, from 7·7% in 2008 to 24·3% in 2012, and long-term unemployment reached 14·4%. We review the background to the crisis, assess how austerity measures have affected the health of the #Greek population and their access to public health services, and examine the political response to the mounting evidence of a Greek public health tragedy.

Wehrt Euch dagegen. #Europa geht anders.
