With all dissent snuffed out at home, Russia is turning its attention to opponents who have sought refuge in the West.
“When I left Russia and came to Prague, I had this illusion of security,” says Alesya.
"Parasites can’t sleep in peace..." was one of the messages that investigative journalist Alesya Marokhovskaya received last year.
The threats were accompanied by the name of the street in Prague where she lived. “I moved house to make it harder for them,” says Alesya.
“We thought it may just be some crazy Czech guy who was pro-Putin and had recognised me on the street.”
But then the messages became more sinister - calling her a "scumbag" and promising to find her "wherever she walks her wheezing dog".
Alesya’s dog really does wheeze when it walks. She informed the Czech police.
Later, Alesya was due to fly to Sweden to attend a conference. The sender then sent even more specific threats: details of her flight, seat number and the hotel she had booked. “It was clear they had high-level access to documents,” Alesya says. “It looks like the behaviour of the Russian state.”
Alesya had been branded a 'foreign agent’ years before by the Russian government, due to her work at independent Russian news website iStories.

What do you think would happen if one day you looked out your window and saw a box truck pull up and park outside your house, and a bunch of armed men wearing windbreakers got out and knocked on your door and presented you with a piece of paper and then put you in the truck and took you away? Or worse still, they put you and your entire family in the back of the truck and took all of you away?
Do you think any of your neighbors would come out of their houses and ask the men with the truck what’s going on, who are they, and why are they taking you and your family away? Would anyone on your block call the police?
If someone called the police and they bothered to show up – the likelihood of which is another issue entirely, of course – what do you think they would do?

Order Reigns in Berlin! As the sun came up on January 1, every bourgeois newspaper published some variation of this headline. Politicians declared victory against violent hordes of Ausländer*innen – the fire department said that it had been a »normal New Year's«.
A normal New Year’s is not peaceful, though. At 7am, the Unfallkrankenhaus, an emergency hospital in Marzahn, reported that they had treated 27 people with serious injuries. Fingers had been severed, eyes destroyed, and entire hands ripped off.
This is the eternal strangeness of Silvester, German New Year's Eve. 364 days a year, the state regulates our lives down to the smallest detail. On December 31, it lets us compensate for this paternalism by handing out kilotons of explosives.
In Texas, where I come from, you can walk into a store and buy an AR-15 with no questions asked. But the authorities won't let you buy explosives, much less set them off in residential areas – that's too dangerous!
One year ago, all of Germany was discussing the Silvester riots in Berlin's migrant neighborhoods, particularly in Neukölln. There had supposedly been a »new dimension of violence«. Over the following week, however, the statistics had to be revised downwards. Now, Berlin police chief Barbara Slowik admitts that there had not been more attacks against police in 2022 than in the years before the pandemic: »There had been similar numbers of attacks in the past.«
But the right-wing discourse about »people refusing to integrate« took on a life of its own, propelling the nonchalant demagogue Kai Wegner into Berlin's Red City Hall. This manufactured racist moral panic had served its purpose, and continues to reverberate. This year, Berlin's police reported on fireworks-related crimes in Neukölln – and 7 of the 9 incidents they listed were in totally different neighborhoods.
The irony is that immigrants who set off fireworks are integrating perfectly into Germany's bizarrely destructive Leitkultur.
Last year, three apartments in Lichtenberg were completely burned out after fireworks landed on a balcony. You probably didn't hear about that, though, because it didn't fit into the racist narrative. That fire was just wholesome German fun – whereas people from Neukölln shooting Böller is dangerous mob violence.
When politicians condemn Gewalt, violence, they are only referring to very specific forms of violence. A headline might say that there was »less violence« but »more arrests« this year. 390 arrests means that 390 people were assaulted, with many thrown to the ground and injured by heavily armed, black-clad officers, many of whom hold barely concealed right-wing views.
There were 4.500 police on Berlin's streets on New Year’s. Parts of Sonnenallee were blocked off with checkpoints, and residents were stopped and frisked before they could reach their homes. By some alchemy of bourgeois ideology, this orgy of violence somehow doesn't count.
In 2023, Neukölln passed drastic budget cuts in schools and youth centers. Money is never lacking for police who terrorize non-German populations. The people of Neukölln are subject to all kinds of systematic violence – like when a poor family is forced out of their home with the help of the police because they can no longer afford the rent.
For bourgeois politicians, »order« is when their violence against poor people goes unchallenged – and »violence« is when poor people no longer tolerate their oppression in an orderly way.
Silvester in Berlin saw a ton of violence – but it was mostly violence by the cops. In this sense, yes, order did prevail in Berlin on New Year's. But as Rosa Luxemburg liked to remind the ruling class, »your ›order‹ is built on sand!«

Elections are still free and fair, press is still free, the judges are still independent, however, the police is rogue, doesn’t fear the civilian leadership and can dictate terms to the elected government.
This type of illiberal democracy is special because it doesn’t need an electoral win for the far-right for it to happen. It could happen theoretically in any European state.
What are the "winning conditions" for a police democracy to take place?
1) Insecurity
2) Public fear of insecurity
3) Violent protests against the government
4) Some level of public support for police having more power.
A lot of European states, and the US meets those criterias.

The Green party MP Caroline Lucas has called for an inquiry into a government unit intended to combat disinformation after it emerged she had been flagged by it for criticisms of ministers and government policy over Covid.
Lucas, who lodged a subject access request along with the campaign group Big Brother Watch for details held on her by the counter-disinformation unit (CDU), said her inclusion in a series of reports amounted to “staggering overreach” by ministers.

Protest organisers at King Charles’ coronation have been arrested, and placards confiscated.
The protest was all legal and agreed with the police, but organisers were arrested on their arrival. It is the latest in a series of state over-reaches trying to stop awkward questions about the UK’s new, unelected head of state.

A French publisher has been arrested on terror charges in London after being questioned by UK police about participating in anti-government protests in France.
Ernest Moret, 28, a foreign rights manager for Éditions la Fabrique, was approached by two plainclothes officers at St Pancras station on Monday evening after arriving by train from Paris to attend the London book fair.
He was questioned for six hours and then arrested for alleged obstruction in refusing to disclose the passcodes to his phone and computer. His treatment was condemned as an attack on the right to demonstrate, amid calls for protests outside the UK embassy in Paris and French Institute in London.
