#OrangePi Now has an #OpenSource #RISC-V SBC [With M.2 Slot]
source: https://news.itsfoss.com/orange-pi-rv/
TL;DR: The #CPU is too weak for a #desktop system. Without #HDMI, there are much cheaper IoT RISC-V systems.
The RISC-V chip it uses is the same one as found on the #Milk-V Mars, with Orange Pi pointing out that it can run Linux distributions, pointing to #Debian #Linux on its download page.
With Milk-V Mars, starting #Firefox takes 20 seconds under Debian. Nobody really wants to work with this #performance. You could certainly shorten the time with a very lightweight customized Linux, but it is questionable whether these adjustments will be made.
What's better is that #PCIe is on the underside, unlike the Mars, and the #Wifi is onboard.
If you are looking for a pure IoT solution without HDMI, the Milk-V Duo S is a much cheaper hardware that runs under Linux.

Faulty instructions in #Alibaba's T-Head #C910 #RISC-V CPUs blow away all #security

When you use these flawed instructions, you will be touching physical #memory directly, bypassing the #MMU and its memory protection mechanisms that ordinarily prevent apps from interfering with each other and the underlying #OS and #hardware.

#Intel has not halted sales or clawed back any inventory. It will not do a recall, period. The #company is not currently commenting on whether or how it might extend its #warranty.

Why would anyone ever buy from them again with these business practices? 🤔

#Chrome Lets #Google Websites #Access Your #System #CPU & #GPU Usage
Source: https://origin.80.lv/articles/chrome-lets-google-websites-access-your-system-cpu-gpu-usage/
Recently, software developer #LucaCasonato found out that Chrome gives all Google websites full access to system/tab CPU, GPU, and memory usage as well as detailed processor information and logging backchannel. "This is interesting because it is a clear violation of the idea that #browser vendors should not give preference to their websites over anyone else's," he said on X/Twitter. "Depending on how you interpret the DMA, this additional exposure of information only to Google properties may be considered a #violation of the #DMA."

AMD won Computex by extending AM5 support and launching new AM4 CPUs
Intel typically uses the same motherboard CPU socket for two generations, but we’ve seen the company support the same socket for an additional series. AMD has been more consistent through the Ryzen CPU family, since releasing the Ryzen 1000 series in 2016. AM4 launched alongside the new Ryzen processors and AMD released its successor, AM5 in 2022. That’s six years of support before a new platform rolled out, but AMD hasn’t finished supporting older motherboards yet.
This is quite interesting as this is the first time I’ve bought AMD. With all my previous Intel based CPUs I had to discard the motherboard and RAM and fully replace it all when I bought a new CPU. Now it seems my AM4 based motherboard can still be used, and I could buy a brand-new CPU for it. Less wastage and expense.
I have never been able to upgrade my CPU before on its own. I’m pretty tempted to try it. But OK, the newer CPU is about 11% faster on benchmarking, but with 60% extra power consumption/heat…

Framework #Laptop 13 To See A #RISC-V #Motherboard Option
source: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Framework-Laptop-RISC-V-Board
"This Mainboard is extremely compelling, but we want to be clear that in this generation, it is focused primarily on enabling developers, tinkerers, and hobbyists to start testing and creating on RISC-V. The peripheral set and performance aren’t yet competitive with our Intel and AMD-powered Framework Laptop Mainboards. This board also has soldered memory and uses #MicroSD cards and #eMMC for storage, both of which are limitations of the processor. It is a great way to start playing with RISC-V though inside of a thin, light, refined laptop. The Mainboard will be able to drop into any Framework Laptop 13 chassis or into the Cooler Master Mainboard Case. DeepComputing is also working closely with the teams at Canonical and #RedHat to ensure Linux support is solid through #Ubuntu and #Fedora."

Russian chipmaker unveils #RaspberryPi competitor — despite US #sanction woes, #Elbrus packs its homegrown chip into the smallest form factor yet
The #MP21, the smallest computer ever to be powered by the Elbrus 2S3, will come equipped with up to 8GB RAM and an SSD between 60 and 480GB of non-soldered SSD storage. The mini-computer will consume 40W of power, much more than the Pi 5's maximum 10W in our testing.
