Exxon Mobil Corp. CEO Darren Woods told editors from Fortune that the world has “waited too long” to begin investing in a broader suite of technologies to slow planetary heating.

Global #warming has exceeded 1.5C across an entire year for the first time.

This year-long breach does not mean that the world has broken the #Paris #Climate #Agreement #limit, but it does bring it closer to doing so in the longer term. The 1.5C limit is a legally binding 2015 treaty with 195 signatories to set out a path for dealing with climate change.

“The biggest bias is the urban heat island effect. What happens is that because heat is retained by the surfaces and released into the air at night, the night’s low temperature is not as low as it could be if the thermometer were outside of town and in a field.”
Global average surface temperatures have been variable, but show an increasing trend in recent decades.Over the years, he said, more and more infrastructure has been built up around the thermometer locations, and at night, the asphalt and concrete release the absorbed heat and push up the temperature.

“You can look at any set of climate data, no matter who produces it, and you can see this effect. The low temperatures are trending upward much faster, and the high temperatures are virtually unchanged. But it’s the average temperature that’s being used to track climate change,” Mr. Watts said.

There are probably truths on both sides. If only we can avoid the dramatic alarmism then maybe we can have a more sensible clearheaded approach to the issue.

How Far to the 1.5°C #Limit?

source: https://tamino.wordpress.com/2024/01/08/how-far-to-the-1-5c-limit/

And what, you deserve to know, is my answer to the original question, “How far to the 1.5°C limit?” Using the current smoothed values calculated with my new definition of “pre-industrial,” I’ll say we are now 1.32°C above pre-industrial, so another 0.18°C will bring us to the limit. At the rate we’re going, I expect that to happen in the early 2030s.

Since the arrival of the #heatwave affecting several Brazilian states, #RioDeJaneiro had already recorded the hottest day of the year on Sunday (12), with a temperature of 42.5°C, and an apparent temperature of 52 degrees on Monday morning (13).

Today’s record heat is the highest since Alerta Rio began taking temperature measurements in the city. The agency reports that the two other highest temperatures this year were 58.3°C, on February 17, and 58°C, on February 4.

Deep #warming

Even if we ‘solve’ global warming, we face an older, slower #problem. #Waste heat could radically alter #Earth’s #future

‘Through his worldwide industrial #civilisation,’ the report concluded, ‘Man is unwittingly conducting a vast geophysical #experiment’ – an experiment with a highly uncertain outcome, but clear and important risks for #life on Earth.
