How Russia attempted to steal Moldovan election, referendum, and what comes next

Although #Russian #interference has taken many forms in #Moldova since its independence in 1991, the election and referendum results on Sunday shocked many pro-European Moldovans.

Despite opinion polls showing clear support for entrenching the desire for EU accession into the country's constitution, the success of the EU referendum came down to the wire, with the support of the large Moldovan diaspora securing a 50.38% victory margin.

The "yes" vote won by a mere 11,000 votes.

Moldovan authorities, the EU, and U.S. officials, as well as independent observers, blamed an unprecedented attack on the country's democracy from #criminal networks and #political groups tied to Russia.

US offers $10 million reward for information on Russian media organization accused of election interference

United States is providing a reward of up to $10 million for information that helps prevent or disrupts foreign election interference linked to the Russian state-sponsored Rybar media organization, the U.S. State Department announced. Rybar and its employees are accused of using social media to meddle in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

The established bounty comes as the U.S. continues to crackdown on Russian election #interference.

On Sept. 4, amid the presidential election campaign period, the U.S. announced sanctions against high-profile Russian propagandists like Margarita Simonyan and seized 32 internet domains linked to Kremlin propaganda campaigns.

#Rybar LLC, founded by the now deceased founder of Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is a state-funded Russian media organization that is contracted by Russian state-owned arms manufacturer #Rostec, according to the State Department's Rewards for Justice program.

BRICS Gets Bigger

The anti-Western economic alliance just expanded by 383 million people:

Six nations will become full-fledged members of the #BRICS group of nations starting January 2024, after their candidacies were approved by leaders of the current member states, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced. The expansion topped the agenda of the summit in #Johannesburg this week.

#Argentina, #Egypt, #Ethiopia, #Iran, #SaudiArabia, and the #UnitedArabEmirates were welcomed as new members on Thursday. The bloc currently consists of #Brazil, #Russia, #India, #China, and #SouthAfrica.

Ethiopia really stands out as a rather bizarre choice, until one takes into account that it is the 14th most populous state on Earth, ahead of both #Vietnam and #Turkey, two states that I was expecting to join BRICS. Argentina is also a little odd, as I would have expected #Venezuela, with its #oil riches, to join first, but it’s possible that its problems with #foreign #interference into its elections and its government might have prevented it from applying to the new organization.

Anyhow, what this indicates is that BRICS is as interested in raw numbers as it is in oil or technological advancement. So #Pakistan, #Indonesia, #Nigeria, and perhaps even #Bangladesh would appear to be on the short list, although conflict with India might keep Pakistan out and Nigeria appears to be among the #African nations most firmly attached to the #G7 states.

Wi-Fi signal interference test — simple trick to speed up your connection

I had this same issue myself last week, and found that some of my WiFi channels in use were clashing on channels that nearby neighbours were also using. You can do some scanning using free Windows or Android apps (not iOS, but Linux also has a nice app called LinSSID, and some routers will do their own scanning which is sometimes called site survey) to determine which channels are the most open where you are, and then set your router to use one of those instead. The 2.4 GHz segment is especially crowded nowadays (but unfortunately it has the better range). The 5 GHz has many more available channels which are open, but the thing is the range is quite a bit less.

It seems that many routers, which have auto scan ability, tend to go for channel 1 or 6. So often channel 10 upwards will be a bit clearer. But there is also some overlap across channels, so a strong channel 1 and channel near each other, will still interfere.
