A useful analysis by #LarryJohnson, talking to Judge Andrew #Napolitano in a 20 minute video livestreamed a few hours ago.

Johnson notes that the drone, clearly a small device, appears to have been shot down or intercepted, and only a bit of flaming debris hit the roof of the building. The important thing will be an inspection of any #drone parts that can be found, to establish who made it. (The US? Poland? Ukraine?)

He also notes that the response within #Russia has been one of outraged, unifying anger. He guesses (I'd think correctly) that the Ukraine's hope must have been that Russia would be provoked to do something major in immediate response, and then the US might roll in their troops to Odessa or elsewhere. Putin hasn't said a word yet, but a retaliation — a measured but very definite one — will have to come to satisfy loud Russian demands.

Russian parliament speaker demands that the "Kyiv regime" be destroyed after the drone attack on the Kremlin - TASS

The United States had no warning about the alleged #drone attack on the #Kremlin that #Russia claimed was an #assassination attempt on Russian President Vladimir #Putin, which #Ukraine vehemently denies, according to a US official.

"Whatever happened, there was no advanced warning," the US official told #CNN, adding that authorities are still trying to figure out what exactly happened.

Last night, Ukrainian drones tried to strike at the Kremlin — Presidential Press Service

Two drones were aimed at the Kremlin, they were quickly disabled, Putin was not injured.

The incident was called a terrorist attack and an attempt on Putin's life and stated that the Kremlin reserves the right to take retaliatory measures where and when it sees fit.

Moscow Mayor Sobyanin has already banned the flights of all drones and copters over the capital.

The coming together of political opposites in Berlin under the banner of peace had been percolating for months, though the union remains ad hoc and unofficial. But marrying #Germany’s extremes is an explicit #Kremlin goal and was first proposed by senior officials in Moscow in early September, according to a trove of sensitive #Russia/n documents largely dated from July to November that were obtained by a European intelligence service and reviewed by The Washington Post.

I urge everyone to read this speech by Timothy Snyder at the UN Security Council on Russia's genocide in Ukraine. If you prefer, the text has a link to the video. This is a calm, well-reasoned discussion about the harm Putin is doing, not just to Ukraine but to the Russian people themselves.

Leaked document exposes Kremlin's 10-year plan to undermine Moldova

A Western intelligence source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Kremlin's Directorate for Cross-Border Cooperation had allegedly created the document, titled "Strategic goals of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Moldova," in 2021.

According to the document, Russia’s key goals are to ensure that Moldovan policymakers and society, in general, have a negative attitude toward NATO and that the country has a strong presence of pro-Russian influence groups in politics and the economy.

In my view, the intermediate outcomes of this gas #war can already be summed up, and they do not look comforting to the #Kremlin. I believe that #Putin’s attempt to «attack» Europe on the energy front was his second significant mistake this year (Sergei Medvedev put it on a par with the launch of full-scale aggression against #Ukraine on 24 February and the announcement of mobilisation on 21 September 2022, but I would call it a tactical error while the latter two can be seen as strategic mistakes). However, what these miscalculations have in common is that the decisions in all these cases were based on a mythologised view of reality. Moreover, they proved to be very hasty and could not be reconsidered.

The behavior of both the Kremlin and the #Defense #Ministry is the latest disappointment for patriots and Russian nationalists, who have offered scathing #criticism on some of the leading pro-war #Telegram channels. Within the “fog of war,” patriotic Russian channels – many of which are run by people on the front lines or who have good sources in the Russian forces and are often unconcerned about #military #censorship – are almost the principal sources of #information about the true state of affairs at the #front.

Of course, Suslov is just one man, and he was never a political dissident. But his presence at #HSE is emblematic of the uncomfortable affinity between Russian #liberalism and #Kremlin #imperialism, underscoring the former’s limits as a politically transformative force. Just as HSE’s decline is the result of the structures and principles on which it was founded, so too are the limitations of Russian liberalism—now brought into painfully sharp relief by #Russia’s invasion of #Ukraine—a result of assumptions that have been inherent to this intellectual and political trend for the past 200 years. As authors like Susanna Rabow-Edling have argued, liberalism in the Russian #Empire was deeply intertwined with #nationalism and the imperial project, with proponents of the movement believing that liberalizing the empire was the only way to preserve its existence. In this sense, it was not dissimilar to liberalism in other colonial metropoles that posited Western #Europe as the epitome of #modernity and its imperial possessions as passive recipients of its supposedly progressive #policy.

Oksana Pokalchuk, who has spent seven years documenting and investigating human rights abuses as Director of Amnesty International #Ukraine, tendered her resignation on Friday as the backlash continued over a controversial #AmnestyInternational report titled, “Ukrainian fighting tactics endanger civilians.”
The #Amnesty report, which accuses the Ukrainian #military of basing its troops too close to civilian infrastructure, has been widely condemned by Ukrainian officials and many others in the international community including #war crimes experts. Meanwhile, the #Kremlin has warmly welcomed Amnesty’s claims, with Russian officials actively promoting the report to justify #Moscow’s ongoing bombing campaign in Ukraine.

Pokalchuk took to #Facebook on August 4 to disavow the report, explaining that Amnesty’s global branch had effectively sidelined the Amnesty Ukraine team and proceeded with publication without their input or consent. She resigned the following day, writing, “Although unwillingly, the organization created material that sounds like support for Russian narratives. Seeking to protect civilians, the study has instead become a tool of Russian #propaganda.”

#Russia is continuing to deny that the massive explosions at a Crimean military base at #Saki that destroyed up to nine of its warplanes were caused by an attack. As the Institute for the Study of #War noted, “the #Kremlin has little incentive to blame Ukraine” since, by doing so, it will admit to serious weaknesses in Russia’s air-defence system. Instead, the Chair of the Crimean Tatar #Mejlis, Refat Chubarov, believes, Russia opted to avenge itself for the humiliation experienced by new mass arrests of Crimean Tatars on fabricated charges One of the motives for the armed searches and arrests of Crimean Tatars has, from the outset, been #propaganda aimed at presenting the main indigenous people of #Crimea, who do not conceal their strong identification with #Ukraine, as a threat. The arrests are also known to bring bonuses or promotion to the #FSB officers and may, therefore, have been planned, but the timing now might well be deliberate.
