A “people” is quite simply a group of individuals that have associated together and have over time formed cultural similarities. It is an organic network of affinity groups with a culture that developed freely and naturally, and that will change and evolve over time. A people have no innate “essence” that exists out in the ether, and there is no force involved to maintain a people. A nation state on the other hand is a group of elites that has forced many people under one despotic military regime with the goal of creating and maintaining an artificial and unified identity
It is difficult to pin down the exact moment that Russia began morphing into a totalitarian state, but the transformation didn’t take long.
For over a decade, the #Kremlin was taking away civil liberties and feeding the population a revamped and increasingly more aggressive version of #nationalism. For nearly a decade, most Russians didn't seem to care.
In 2012, the Kremlin ruthlessly ended the wave of #demonstrations known as the #Bolotnaya protests. Named for the square in Moscow where demonstrators gathered, the rallies began in December 2011, when thousands of Russians flooded the streets to protest against election fraud.

I have been seeing more and more articles and thoughts like this about needing to increase #birthrates. This is from RT.com but its certainly not unique to #Russian nationalism. Are all of these "fears" related to a general increase in #nationalism world-wide? I don't recall the last time I saw anyone upset about #OverPopulation but the global population is still increasing at rates that are higher than I was taught in #publicSchool where #sustainable.@realcaseyrollins ✝️

Offensive vs. Defensive Nationalism
This conflict shows a harmful confusion, among the Russians and their supporters, between the state as a nation in the ethnic sense and the state as an administrative entity.
A state that wants to base its legitimacy on cultural unity must be small; it is otherwise doomed to meet the hostility of others. A Francophone Swiss citizen, although culturally linked to his or her language, does not aspire to belong to France, and France does not try to invade French-speaking Switzerland under this pretext. Further, national identities can change quickly: Francophone Belgians have a different identity from French people. France itself went through an operation of internal colonialism to destroy Provençal, Languedoc, Picard, Savoyard, Breton, and other cultures and eradicate their languages under a centralized identity. Nationality is never defined and never fixed; administration is.
Cultural unity can make sense, but only in the form of something reduced such as a city-state –I would even go so far as to say that a state only works well in this way. In this case, nationalism is defensive — Catalan, Basque or Christian Lebanese — but in the case of a large state like Russia, nationalism becomes offensive. Notice that under the Pax Romana or the Pax Ottomana, there were no large states, but city-states gathered in an empire whose role was distant. But there is loose empire and rigid nation-state like empire, the latter being represented by Russia .

In the past 10 days over 23000 Afghans were deported and handed over to Taliban border control.
Ever since the Taliban took over Afghanistan, Iranian government has pushed to help or forcefully deport afghan citizens living in Iran.
Many of them have lived all their lives in iran, even second generation afghan refugees who are now being forced to leave the country, have never been to Afghanistan and were living in a limbo for up to 3 decades.
Iran doesn't allow Afghans to become Iranian citizens, no matter how long they lived in the country or they were born there.
Racism towards afghans is widespread and in most cases iranian women who marry an afghan citizen, risking to have children who will never have a birth certificate and become stateless.
Very small group of people in Iran support the rights of Afghans in the country and calls for granting citizenship to all children born in the country have gained no support and instead they are being harassed, bullied and ridiculed by both regime supporters and the opposition groups, specially the nationalists and monarchists.
The sad part is that many of the most vocal opponent of this are people with dual nationality.

Multiple reports are reinvestigating the neo-Nazi fighters and militias involved in the war both in Russia and Ukraine. "You have neo-Nazis on both sides of this conflict," says Ukrainian American journalist Lev Golinkin, a longtime reporter on the far right in Ukraine and Russia who is critical of the Western media's normalization of groups like the Azov Battalion. "We are sending a very dangerous message that if you're the right type of neo-Nazis, we will not only work with you, we will celebrate you," Golinkin notes.
We also speak with national security reporter Ben Makuch, whose investigations reveal the networks connecting Ukrainian and Russian militias and American neo-Nazis. An anti-Putin Russian militia that carried out attacks inside Russia in May was led by a neo-Nazi who has maintained links with American neo-Nazis. In a new piece, Makuch also shares the story of an American military veteran wanted for murder who is now fighting for ultranationalist groups in Ukraine. "We know there has been secretive pipelines and networks," says Makuch. "That still exists."

Will Republicans become a Christian nationalist party? Can they win if they do?
Almost 70% of Americans answered no to all or most of those statements. About 10% were in very strong agreement — a group that PRRI dubbed Christian nationalism adherents. Another 19% were sympathizers — agreeing with the statements, but not always strongly agreeing.
Among Republicans, the picture was very different: More than half qualified as adherents (21%) or sympathizers (33%).
As the PRRI study found, Christian nationalist beliefs correlate strongly with anti-Muslim, anti-Black, antisemitic and anti-immigrant views.
Among Americans overall, for example, roughly 6 in 10 say that the “growing number of newcomers from other countries strengthens American society.” But among white, Christian nationalist adherents and sympathizers, nearly 7 in 10 disagree. About 8 in 10 of them say that “immigrants are invading our country and replacing our cultural and ethnic background.”
Support for Christian nationalism also goes along with at least a rhetorical acceptance of political violence. Four in 10 Christian nationalist adherents agree with the statement that “because things have gotten so far off track, true American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our country.” About 8 in 10 Americans overall reject that statement.
