80 years ago, on January 27, 1944, #Leningrad was completely liberated from the Nazi blockade. The almost 900-day siege of the city on the Neva River was a time of the heaviest trials, unparalleled courage and fortitude.
Today we honor the heroes who defended the city and fought for the freedom of the Fatherland. We congratulate veterans, residents of the Siege of Leningrad, distinguished colleagues and all Petersburgers on our memorable day.

Als één roman uit de wereldliteratuur iets zegt over oorlog, onderdrukking en het dagelijkse leven in een totalitaire staat, dan is het Leven en lot van de Russische schrijver Vasili Grossman (1905-1964). Behalve een aangrijpend relaas over de Sovjet-Unie tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, met als hoogtepunt de Slag om Stalingrad, is het ook een filosofisch traktaat over goed en kwaad, over de angsten van de mens in tijden van crisis, over de overeenkomsten tussen totalitaire ideologieën van links en rechts, over verraad in alle soorten en maten. Daarbij spelen ook moed en fatsoen, eigenschappen die voor maar weinigen zijn weggelegd, een grote rol. (...)
Dat Grossman met zijn roman het wezen van de communistische dictatuur had geraakt, bleek toen hij zijn manuscript ter publicatie inleverde en het meteen door de KGB in beslag werd genomen. Zelfs zijn aantekeningen en het lint van zijn typemachine werden in beslag genomen. Want als dit boek in de Sovjet-Unie zou verschijnen, zou het volgens Stalins ideoloog Soeslov een atoombom onder het regime leggen. Grossman kwijnde nadien weg van teleurstelling. Gelukkig had hij nog een kopie van zijn manuscript bij een vriend in bewaring gegeven. Met hulp van de dissidente natuurkundige Andrej Sacharov en de schrijver Vladimir Vojnovitsj werd het in de jaren zeventig naar het Westen gesmokkeld, waar het in 1974 verscheen. Als Grossman toen nog had geleefd, zou hij er vrijwel zeker de Nobelprijs voor hebben gekregen.

La manifestante, Yelena Osipova, est âgée de 76 ans. Elle est une survivante du siège de Leningrad tenu pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Lors de celui-ci, les nazis avaient assiégé Saint-Pétersbourg, appelée à l'époque Leningrad, pendant deux ans et demi. Le siège s'était achevé sur une victoire soviétique, au prix de nombreuses pertes humaines.
