Safety warnings as #Torness #nuclear plant sees increase in cracks
The cracks were detected in April 2024 and were “at the upper end of expectations”. The first three cracks were discovered at Torness in February 2022. That's risen to 46 cracks.
Spreading cracks could result in debris inhibiting the cooling of hot #radioactive fuel. This can lead to a reactor #meltdown, which can result in the escape of radioactivity into the environment.
The station was originally scheduled to close in 2023, and in 2016 its expected life was extended to 2030.

Falschbehauptungen wie in einer Dokumentation, zu sehen auf waidwerk, sind ärgerlich und vermeidbar. Konkret wird im off-Kommentar behauptet, das Land sei "bis heute von keinem Staat" anerkannt. In einer Nachvertonung ließe sich das fix beheben.
Taiwan - Fliegende Fische oder Atommüll? ist zu sehen auf waidwerk. Ich fand die Sendung inhaltlich durchaus erhellend; mir war nicht klar dass manche Landesteile (hier: Lanyu) quasi unter dem staatlichen Energieversorger leben. Die Lagerung von Atommüll macht, dass hier strukturell eng verzahnt ist was anders gelöst besser wäre. Eine aufrichtige Aufarbeitung (und Beseitigung der Altlasten) täte allen Beteiligten gut.

Russian troops likely aimed at hitting the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant, also reporting that some of the windows at the plant's premises were shattered due to the blast wave.
Earlier in the day, the Energy Ministry reported that the explosions damaged the windows of an administrative building and a laboratory near the plant. According to the Khmelnytskyi Oblast Military Administration, residential buildings and some vehicles also suffered damage.

Bangladesh finds way to pay Russia for nuclear plant: with yuan
With U.S. and European sanctions barring #Russia from much of the international banking system, Dhaka has been scrambling for ways to settle repayments worth $110 million for the still under construction Rooppur power plant. But last week, a high-level delegation from Russia and #Bangladesh's Ministry of Finance agreed that the bills could be paid in #yuan.

Looking at the data for #electricity demand for the #UK over a period of months, it seems like it rarely dips below 30 GW or much above 40 GW. With the introduction of large numbers of #ElectricVehicles, I expect that demand to rise significantly but if car batteries are also used partly for domestic use then it may smooth out peak demand out. More #WindFarms and other sustainable sources will needed as well as #NuclearPower for the base load.
Over half of the #UK's current #electricity demand is being supplied by #WindPower (53% of 30 GW of power currently being consumed). Add to that #NuclearPower and over two thirds is coming from low carbon sources.

Amidst a slow-burning heat wave that has killed hundreds and sparked intense wildfires across Western Europe, and combined with already low water levels due to drought, the Rhône's water has gotten too hot for the job. It's no longer possible to cool reactors without expelling water downstream that's so hot as to extinguish aquatic life. So a few weeks ago, Électricité de France (EDF) began powering down some reactors along the Rhône and a second major river in the south, the Garonne. That's by now a familiar story: Similar shutdowns due to drought and heat occurred in 2018 and 2019. This summer's cuts, combined with malfunctions and maintenance on other reactors, have helped reduce France's nuclear power output by nearly 50 percent.
Yep. A lot of energy for France is coming now from the #renewables in Germany , especially wind and solar.
