Alarm sounded over 'prison-like' conditions in UK #immigration centres

A new report has urged UK authorities to make a raft of improvements inside immigrant detention centres, including detention conditions and staffing issues.

That's according to a new report by the European Committee for the Prevention of #Torture (CPT) released on Thursday.

During a visit to the country between March and April 2023, it flagged up several issues surrounding the uncertainty of how long migrants will be detained, "prison-like" conditions in centres and the treatment of those displaying symptoms of mental illness.

The UK government blasted the report, saying it did not "recognise much" of its content.

UK - New political funding rules sneak in

The Tory government passed a statutory instrument that will increase the amount of money that an individual can donate to a party without declaring who donated it, from £7,500 to £11,180. We are concerned about any move that could see more money flowing anonymously into our politics.

The same statutory instrument increased the national election spending cap by 80%, from £19.5m to about £35m. This is the amount that party HQs can spend, there is another cap for how much local candidates can spend.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron’s appointment as Foreign Secretary – despite having left Parliament in 2016 – has triggered fresh calls to abolish the House of Lords.

Cameron replaces James Cleverly, who has moved to ousted cabinet minister Suella Braverman’s former role of Home Secretary.

There is no constitutional requirement for a cabinet minister to be an elected MP, but it is very rare that senior offices of state are held by unelected politicians. Lobbyist Cameron has been handed a seat in the 800-odd member House of Lords for life to take up the role.

Poverty levels in the UK are “simply not acceptable” and the [UK] government is violating international law, the United Nations’ poverty envoy has said ahead of a visit to the country this week, when he will urge ministers to increase welfare spending.

Olivier De Schutter, the UN’s special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, cited research showing universal credit payments of £85 a week for single adults over 25 were “grossly insufficient” and described the UK’s main welfare system as “a leaking bucket”.

England to diverge from EU water monitoring standards

This is the latest example of the UK diverging from EU environmental standards. Recent analysis found that many toxic chemicals and pesticides banned in the bloc since Brexit are not outlawed for use in the UK. Ministers have also sought to rip up EU-derived sewage pollution rules for housebuilders.

In 2019, the last time the full water assessments took place, just 14% of rivers were in good ecological health and none met standards for good chemical health. The government has said it does not intend to deliver a complete update until 2025, the latest permissible date under the new WFD.

Low-welfare eggs from caged hens imported to UK in ‘staggering’ numbers

The president of the National Farmers’ Union, said she was “staggered” by the import figures for the first eight months of 2023.

The total number of consignments imported since 2021:

• 422 in 2021
• 2,120 in 2022
• 2,536 in the just first eight months of 2023

“When the medical advice is to eat British Lion eggs [stamped to show they have been produced in accordance with a code of practice], why on earth would they be importing eggs produced to standards that would be illegal in the UK?” she asked.

• “It raises serious questions as to whether the government is checking food imports given the ongoing delays in the border target operating model.”

Gary Ford, the deputy chief executive of the British Egg Industry Council, echoed her concerns, saying it was “very disappointing” to see imports growing, “particularly at a time when British producers have been struggling due to poor returns”.

Now, the country is failing to phase out pesticides that have been found to be harmful to human health and the environment at the same rate as the EU, according to research from Pesticide Action Network (PAN).

Thirteen of the 36 chemicals are considered highly hazardous pesticides under UN definitions used to identify the most harmful substances.
