This morning in #Chile, Yuri Beletsky worried that low clouds would block his view. "We got really lucky when the comet suddenly appeared just above the cloud deck," he says.

"This is a stack of five 15 second exposures from my Nikon D810a camera," he says. "The view was spectacular."

Clearly, #Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is living up to the hype. Later this week the comet will pass by the sun near the orbit of Mercury where it will receive a brightening dose of solar heat. Then it will proceed toward Earth for a close encounter (0.47 AU) and possible daytime apparition during the second week of October.

I was about to go to sleep when I saw that the folks at the UT4 telescope were using the lasers, so I decided to snap a quick shot.

But when reviewing the image on my camera's screen I noticed something was off. I looked up and saw that some clouds had rolled in within seconds! Here you can see the lasers going through two cloud layers.

Large M7.4 #earthquake in Chile, M6.0 in #Alaska -- seismic unrest spreading now
7/20/2024
#dutchsinse

"Last night, July 19, 2024, a large M7.4 (M7.3) earthquake struck the border of North #Chile and #Bolivia / #Argentina.

As we would expect, after last weeks M7.1 deep earthquake in Philippines, (and M6.2 deep earthquake in Japan)--- 8 days prior to today -- we are now seeing the spread of M6.0 and M7.0+ earthquakes as well as the equidistant spaced M5.0+ earthquakes between each point which broke.

The only thing missing from this past weeks earthquake forecast is the area of North Japan to Kuril Islands breaking with a new M7.0 or greater earthquake."

‘Fool’s Gold’ may be valuable after all
We used to make fun of Fool's Gold. Now, it might fuel the future.

Fool's gold or #iron-pyrite — a common mineral that resembles its precious counterpart — may be more valuable than scientists originally thought, as it has been found to be abundant in #lithium.

Lithium is vital to the future development of green energy. This is because the material, which is highly reactive, is a key element in batteries — including of the kind used in electric vehicles (hence the name, lithium ion batteries).

Due to this, demand for lithium is soaring. The precious resource can be extracted from brines — and also mined in select locations including #Argentina, #Australia, #Bolivia, #Chile and #China. But scientists have now found it in an apparently undervalued #mineral.

The strange discovery was made after a team of researchers from West Virginia University set out to see whether lithium could be extracted with alternative industrial operations.

They found an abundance of lithium in the pyrite minerals in shale — a sedimentary rock made from mud.
