Sysad.org seems to be the new NaturalNews disinformation / troll home

If you've seen a recent follow from 999999999@sysad.org, this is a "glue" account that has been trying to reconnect numerous propaganda, disinformation, spam, and troll accounts that were formerly on share.naturalnews.com, which seems to have gone offline as of late August.

From 9's profile page:

We switched D* pods cos the Natural News host server crashed and we jumped over to SysAd on September 5th, 2021. Thanks for having us. Looking forward to interacting here. Cheers!!

I don't have a pod admin contact for Sysad.org, and there's none listed on the site's inforamational page: https://sysad.org/

Pod stats list just under 1,000 montly active users (MAU), and open registrations: https://sysad.org/statistics

Recommendations:

  • Block 999999999@sysad.org This will prevent it from commenting on your own posts.
  • Monitor the profile's posts. It's likely new migratees will comment, like, or reshare these.
  • Get ready to start blocking more sysad.org profiles and deleting comments to your posts.

I'm not convinced Sysad is fully black hat, but it's quite clearly poorly administered. Site-level blocks may be justified if that trend continues.

And if the sysad.org podmin is reading this: Put up some contact information so you can be informed directly of abuse. For your own sake and that of legitimate and good-faith users of your system. Thanks, both from me an on their behalf.

NaturalNews Pod Stats

First the good news: the pod is presently offline. Whether that's a temporary or permanent thing isn't clear, but it's a positive development.

Second: it appears that there are around 725 active users (monthly), 12,000 or so over six months.

Just for a "scope of problem" comparison.

Following several #NaturalNews related hashtags reveals a few additional profiles I'd not previously blocked.

Several of these are long-inactive, so the gains are probably small.

Wikipedia: NaturalNews

Natural News (formerly NewsTarget, which is now a separate sister site) is a far-right, anti-vaccination conspiracy theory and fake news website known for promoting alternative medicine, pseudoscience, and far-right extremism.[1][2][3][4]

The site's founder, Michael Allen "Mike" Adams, gained attention after posting a blog entry implying a call for violence against proponents of GMO foods, and then allegedly creating another website with a list of names of alleged supporters. He has been accused of using "pseudoscience to sell his lies".[5] Adams has described vaccines as "medical child abuse".[6]

The website sells various dietary supplements, promotes alternative medicine and climate change denial, makes tendentious nutrition and health claims,[7] disseminates fake news,[8][9][10] and espouses various conspiracy theories and pro-Donald Trump propaganda.[11][12] These conspiracy theories include chemophobic claims about the purported dangers of "chemtrails",[1] fluoridated drinking water,[13] anti-perspirants, laundry detergent, monosodium glutamate, aspartame, and vaccines.[1][7][14] It has also spread conspiracy theories about the Zika virus allegedly being spread by genetically modified mosquitoes[15] and purported adverse effects of genetically modified crops, as well as the farming practices associated with and foods derived from them.[16]

As of 2014, Natural News had approximately 7 million unique visitors per month.[4]

In May 2020, Facebook banned Natural News content from its platform after discovering that the site was boosting its popularity using content farms in North Macedonia and the Philippines, a form of spamming.[17] Natural News bypassed the ban by republishing its content on a large number of topic-specific domain names, including trump.news, extinction.news, mind.control.news, and veggie.news.[17][18] The Institute for Strategic Dialogue found 496 domain names associated with Natural News as of June 2020.[18][19]

There is a NaturalNews pod on Diaspora (share.naturalnews.com), and members of that pod are without exception in my experience dedicated to spreading disinformation and propaganda, which is why I strongly advocate a block-on-sight policy for them.

The Wikipedia link has considerable additional background.

On the Wikipedia Reliable Sources page, Natural News is one of only 18 blacklisted sites of 351 entries. (The page is a useful guide to site reputation for numerous frequently-used sites, including many which appear in Diaspora posts.)

Facebook bans health and conspiracy site Natural News (2019)

Facebook on Sunday removed the prominent health and conspiracy site Natural News from its platform and banned its incendiary founder from posting content.

In an email to Ars, a spokesperson for Facebook confirmed the removal and said only that it was over "violating our policies against spam." Under those policies, Facebook "do[es] not allow people to use misleading or inaccurate information to collect likes, followers, or shares." More specifically, it prohibits sites that "encourage likes, shares, or clicks under false pretenses," and those that "artificially increase distribution for financial gain," among other things.

Facebook’s decision comes just a day after The Daily Beast published a report into the wild, far-right conspiracy theories that have become staples on Natural News. ...

Old news from two years ago, but a useful pointer for those keeping tabs on NaturalNews. Or those unfamiliar with the site.

(There's a NaturalNews pod on Diaspora. I'm advocating all other pods refuse to federate with it. Barring that, block any NN profiles individually.)
