Communia bets social media can be good for you
Olivia DeRamus is flipping the script: “What if scrolling through social media didn’t make us miserable? What if, especially for women, social media could actually make us feel more supported?”.
“It’s certainly not what mainstream social platforms have been built for,” DeRamus told TechCrunch. But with her social platform Communia, DeRamus is daring to try something that seems counterintuitive.
Communia is both a social platform and a mental health tool; you can post updates in a community feed, or you can privately journal and track your emotions over time. But for users to get vulnerable, they need to feel safe. So, the platform is taking an approach that could polarize some, but could reassure others: People must verify their identity before they can fully use the app.
“It’s a safety feature, but it also kind of sets the tone that this is an intimate space and that you’re safe here,” she said. “So people feel more empowered to talk about their PMDD, or to talk about the difficult life experience they’re going through.”
I’ve always suspected that anonymous pseudonyms have often led to online abuses, bullying and trolling. So by identifying people, we would probably see more accountability and respect online. I get that many don’t want to be identified online, and that is a perfectly good choice, but for those who want a safer place online the choice to choose a network that verifies identity may be their perfect choice. And I believe it is very good that there is this choice to be had.
But to survive, it will need to be economically viable. With verified identities, you really do not want to have your metadata being shared elsewhere. So let’s hope the economic model is sustainable and also respects rights to privacy.

Young people support Gazans. Critics blame #TikTok.
🔶️ Jeff Morris Jr., a former executive at the dating app Tinder, went viral on the social network X earlier this month for saying that “Israel is losing the TikTok war.”
🔶️ Morris argued a point that that some lawmakers have since borrowed: That young Americans are supporting Gazans in large numbers because of the number of pro-Palestinian videos on the platform.
🔶️ Part of Morris’s evidence was that over the past three years, videos with the hashtag “#standwithpalestine” had 2.9 billion views on the platform, while “#standwithisrael” videos had only about 200 million.

Instagram: Neue Funktionen sollen vor missbräuchlicher Nutzung schützen
Instagram führt neue Funktionen

die missbräuchliches Verhalten auf der Plattform unterbinden sollen. Man
möchte damit „freundliche Interaktion fördern", denn insbesondere viele
Creator und Personen öffentlichen Lebens werden mit verletzenden oder
negativen Inhalten konfrontiert.
Hierzu hat Meta die Blockierfunktion weiter aufgebohrt. Wird jemand
blockiert, dann werden -- auf expliziten Wunsch -- sämtliche Konten
dieser Person blockiert. Dies ist sowohl für bestehende, als auch neu
erstellte Konten der Fall. Durch den Automatismus müssen, so Instagram,
wöchentlich vier Millionen Konten weniger händisch geblockt werden.

Zudem arbeitet man an einer Erkennung für Spam- und Betrugsversuche.
Nachrichten und Kommentare werden dann automatisch gefiltert und
verborgen, statt zuvor händisch. Für Antworten auf Instagram Stories ist
dies global verfügbar und wird in englischer Sprache getestet. Man
filtert nach bestimmten Wörtern und kann angeblich auch falsche bzw.
verfremdete Schreibweisen (1 statt i, etc.) erkennen. Derartige
Nachrichten oder Kommentare werden verborgen. Weitere Sprachen sollen
ebenfalls folgen.

Das automatische Verbergen von Nachrichten bzw. Kommentaren wird derzeit
für Creator-Konten getestet. In den Einstellungen kann man eine Liste an
eigenen, zusätzlichen Wörtern, Ausdrücken sowie Emojis erstellen.
Erstmals lassen sich auch Story-Antworten verbergen. Die Funktion ist
vorerst auch nur für Nutzer ab 100.000 Followern aktiv.
Für Direktnachrichten und Kommentare animiert man mit einer neuen
Benachrichtigung zu respektvollem Umgangston in der Kommunikation, für
den Fall, dass das System potenziell anstößige Inhalte erkennt. Die
Hinweise werden derzeit nicht für Nutzer mit deutschsprachiger App
angezeigt, wohl aber für Englisch, Französisch sowie weitere Sprachen.

- Verbesserte Blockierfunktion: Wer jemanden blockiert, kann künftig auch alle weiteren Konten dieser Person blockieren -- sowohl bestehende als auch neue.
- Die Funktion Nachrichten/Kommentare verbergen ist jetzt global für Antworten auf Instagram Stories verfügbar und wird bald in der Lage sein, auch Spam- und Betrugsversuche zu erkennen. Dies wird zunächst auf Englisch getestet, weitere Sprachen folgen. Außerdem werden künftig auch (absichtlich) falsche Schreibweisen von Wörtern erkannt und gefiltert, beispielsweise die Verwendung von „1" statt „i".
Die neuen Funktionen speziell für Creator*innen:
- Hinweise zum Umgangston in Direktnachrichten: Wer einer oder einem Creator*in mit 10.000 oder mehr Follower*innen eine DM schicken möchte, sieht unten im Chat eine Benachrichtigung, die an einen respektvollen und positiven Umgangston erinnert.
- Standardeinstellungen für die Funktion Nachrichten/Kommentare verbergen: Instagram testet ab sofort weltweit die standardmäßige Einstellung der Funktion Nachrichten/Kommentare verbergen für Creator*innen. In der Testphase wird Personen, die einen Creator Account eröffnen oder zu diesem wechseln, das Einstellungsmenü angezeigt. Bei bereits existierenden Creator Accounts werden die Einstellungen aktualisiert und die Creator*innen mit einer Benachrichtigung darauf aufmerksam gemacht. ::: :::
