Today's a holiday in the #UK (Bank Holiday), an extra weekday off for Easter. My wife wanted to go on a slightly longer #bike trip and also somewhere new. So I chose #BictonPark. The total trip was just over a Marathon distance (it was 42.8 km) and mostly over some rural roads without a huge volume of traffic. The destination is quite nice though perhaps a bit too manicured. I'll post a few interesting #photographs.

There are several #GlassHouses dating back to the 19th century in which are kept plants from various climates. It reminded me of #KewGardens in London but on a smaller scale.

In this one, the plants are of tropical origin.

Some people don't like cloudy days and that's understandable. The Sun will probably come out later anyway today but the underside of the #clouds today currently show undulations which means that the temperature variation with height is not uniform. There is low air pressure which is causing instability in the atmosphere and will draw in air from elsewhere. Currently the wind speed is about 30 km/h.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I went to the birthday party of a retired colleague. There she saw a #model #bridge which could be assembled with wooden elements and nothing else. It got her enthused about making her own smaller version and so she went off to a local DIY store and bought a few lengths of timber and started tinkering. This is version 0.1 and is a proof of concept but it already comfortably holds 8 kg. The next steps will be to get all the pieces properly aligned and contacting each other at the correct angle. I'll make a #StructuralEngineer out of her yet.

It's straightforward to calculate the #components of a #2D #vector given that you have a pre-defined set of #axes. Often, we talk about #cartesian #coordinates. If the vector changes, whether in #magnitude or #direction, we can calculate the updated components too. The converse question is what if the the vector is held constant and you change or #rotate the axes? The components in the new coordinate system can be found with a little bit of #trigonometry and #algebra. As vectors are #first-order #tensors, they are much simpler to calculate than quantities like stress for which I've also made an animation for if you search for the hashtag #tensors.

In this animation, you can see the components changing as the axes go through a full rotation.

Three non-conspiracies in one #photograph during today's #sunset. There is a #WaxingCrescent #NewMoon, to which humans have been in my lifetime. The #contrail that a passing #aeroplane is illuminated by the setting #Sun and is made up of water droplets condenses out of hot exhaust #gases of the #JetEngines. Oh, and the #Earth is round, as is evidenced by the fact that the Sun sets at different bearings on the #horizon at different times of year and the angle at which it sets is dependent on the latitude at which you happen to live.
