GNUnet News: GNUnet 0.23.0

GNUnet 0.23.0 released

We are pleased to announce the release of GNUnet 0.23.0.

GNUnet is an alternative network stack for building secure, decentralized and privacy-preserving distributed applications. Our goal is to replace the old insecure Internet protocol stack. Starting from an application for secure publication of files, it has grown to include all kinds of basic protocol components and applications towards the creation of a GNU internet.

This is a new major release. It breaks protocol compatibility with the 0.22.0X versions. Please be aware that Git master is thus henceforth (and has been for a while) INCOMPATIBLE with the 0.22.0X GNUnet network, and interactions between old and new peers will result in issues. In terms of usability, users should be aware that there are still a number of known open issues in particular with respect to ease of use, but also some critical privacy issues especially for mobile users. Also, the nascent network is tiny and thus unlikely to provide good anonymity or extensive amounts of interesting information. As a result, the 0.23.0 release is still only suitable for early adopters with some reasonable pain tolerance .

Note that due to mirror synchronization, not all links might be functional early after the release. For direct access try http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gnunet/

Changes

A detailed list of changes can be found in the git log , the NEWS and the bug tracker . Noteworthy highlights are

  • Code review: A number of issues found during a code review have been addressed.
  • util : A GNUNET_OS_ProjectData must now be passed to some APIs that are commonly used by third parties using libgnunetutil (e.g. Taler, GNUnet-Gtk) as to properly handle cases where the GNUnet installation directory is different from the third-party directory.
  • Build System : Improved build times by outsourcing handbook to prebuilt files and only generating GANA source files manually.

Known Issues

  • There are known major design issues in the CORE subsystems which will need to be addressed in the future to achieve acceptable usability, performance and security.
  • There are known moderate implementation limitations in CADET that negatively impact performance.
  • There are known moderate design issues in FS that also impact usability and performance.
  • There are minor implementation limitations in SET that create unnecessary attack surface for availability.
  • The RPS subsystem remains experimental.

In addition to this list, you may also want to consult our bug tracker at bugs.gnunet.org which lists about 190 more specific issues.

Thanks

This release was the work of many people. The following people contributed code and were thus easily identified: Christian Grothoff, TheJackiMonster, oec, ch3, and Martin Schanzenbach.

You can ‘play’ AAA games on a Pi (or anything else) using open source Sunshine and Moonlight

The image shows an adorable cartoon penguin wearing headphones and holding a video game controller. It is positioned in the foreground against a background of a circuit board, with various electronic components and labels such as "Raspberry Pi 5" and "HDMI" visible. The background has a vibrant teal and green color scheme, with streaks of light emanating from behind the penguin, adding a dynamic element to the scene.
Moonlight allows you to play your PC games on almost any device, whether you’re in another room or miles away from your gaming rig.

Moonlight (formerly Limelight) is an open source implementation of NVIDIA’s GameStream protocol. They implemented the protocol used by the NVIDIA Shield and wrote a set of 3rd party clients.

You can stream your collection of PC games from your gaming PC to any supported device and play them remotely (even over the Internet). Moonlight is perfect for gaming on the go without sacrificing the graphics and game selection available on a PC.

Sunshine is a self-hosted game stream host for Moonlight (where you are running the game from). Offering low latency, cloud gaming server capabilities with support for AMD, Intel, and Nvidia GPUs for hardware encoding. Software encoding is also available. You can connect to Sunshine from any Moonlight client on a variety of devices. A web UI is provided to allow configuration, and client pairing, from your favorite web browser. Pair from the local server or any mobile device.

Sunshine can host a game from a device running Android, ChromeOS, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, Xbox One/Series, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Wii U, or LG webOS TV. Run Sunshine on your own hardware. No need to pay monthly fees to a cloud gaming provider. It works with Intel, AMD or Nvidia GPUs.

So yes, you could have a game running on a Windows or Linux or other computer, and be accessing and playing it from a Raspberry Pi or a mobile device.

This is also useful if you have one main gaming computer with a good GPU, but others in the home have smaller computers and also wish to play games.

Switching to Firefox

by Asindu

December 07, 2024 • software

When ever you hear people trying to convince other people to switch to Firefox the reason is usually moral or ideological. 1
A usually toted reason, is that capitalist browsers like Chrome, Safari & Edge have too much market share. So we need to switch to the less pathologically operated Firefox — this post is not about that.
I recently switched to Firefox from Chrome. I felt like I was missing out on so much.
Chrome is simply no longer better than Firefox, features wise. Firefox is now the superior browser!

If your webcam didn’t come with customization software, you can use OBS to reframe it

The image shows a close-up view of a small, square webcam attached to the top of a computer monitor. The webcam is white with a black circular lens. The monitor displays a blurry image in the background; it seems to be an abstract landscape of orange and brown hues, possibly a digital painting or a photograph of a desert-like environment. The foreground is dominated by the webcam and the top edge of the monitor, which is dark gray or black.
OBS is free and open source software that will provide various filters and effects you can apply to an input such as a webcam. It will generate an output stream which any app will think is a webcam.

In this way you can apply custom masks, overlays, zoom in, add a title, change colours, change scenes between multiple cameras, or share your screen, change the background, and lots more.

Cross-platform open source HandBrake Video Converter Just Got a Big Update

Graphic showing a pineapple with a cocktail drink to its left.
HandBrake, the free and open-source video converter and encoder, has released a new update. HandBrake 1.9 has improved support for Intel hardware, VP9 video, disc sources, and much more.

It also supports many of the newest codecs, and the linked article also mentions which codes are succeeding which ones in future.

It is also using the latest FFmpeg version 7.1.

If you don’t use FFmpeg on the command line, then HandBrake is pretty well much the go-to GUI alternative.

DistroSea.com: a website that lets you run and test 60+ Linux distributions straight from your web browser

A browser showing the URL distrosea.com. In the shown tab is a full version of Ubuntu with its dock icons down the left-hand side. Two icons can be seen on the home screen called Install Ubuntu 24.04LTS and a Home icon.
No need for any installation or even creating a live bootable medium. DistroSea uses virtual machine (VM) technology to allow multiple operating systems (distros, in this case) to run on a single host system. Each Linux distro runs in an isolated VM with its own visualized resources (CPU, RAM, storage.)

DistroSea downloads and configures the distro ISOs using the quick get script from the Quickemu project. It also uses noVNC libraries to allow you to interact with the distros in your browser. noVNC a web-based VNC (Virtual Network Computing) client that connects to the graphical environment of the Linux distro running on the server and streams it to the user’s browser. This allows full interaction with the distro as if it were installed locally.

Quite an interesting review on how this works, and seems it may be a better experience than using VirtualBox.

Latest Piper app has built-in support for the Logitech G502 X mouse

Graphical view of a Logitech G502 X mouse from above showing the numbers for each different button.
It was not so much that the mouse was not supported, but it was not displaying the graphic properly and showing all the buttons for remapping. It now looks like it is all working 100% in the GUI.

Piper is a GUI front end to ratbagd DBus daemon that works in the background. So Piper really gives you a nice graphical viewer to edit your mouse’s profiles and configs.

GNU Taler news: libeufin independent security audit report and developer response published

We received a grant from NLnet foundation to pay for the development of libeufin for regional- and event-currencies. NGI assists these projects by paying for independent security audits. Thus, we are happy that RadicallyOpenSecurity performed an external crystal-box security audit of the libeufin component of GNU Taler. You can find the final report here. We already addressed all significant findings and compiled a response detailing the changes. We thank RadicallyOpenSecurity for their work, and NLnet and the European Commission's Horizion 2020 NGI initiative for funding this work.

Man kann was tun - also tun wir was!

Probably need to not care too much about your data :)

Ntfs2btrfs is a tool which does in-place conversion of Microsoft's NTFS filesystem to the open-source filesystem Btrfs, much as btrfs-convert does for ext2. The original image is saved as a reflink copy at image/ntfs.img, and if you want to keep the conversion you can delete this to free up space.
