We're all racists, probably even more so if we aren't on Mastodon

So I've just learned the other day that curating your timeline/stream according to your personal interests and/or the topic of your account/channel is utterly racist. No matter how specialised your account/channel is.

Everyone in the Fediverse is basically required to follow a substantial amount of Black users, especially Black activists. If you're on Hubzilla or (streams), you must actually follow them, i.e. you must give them full permissions to send you anything and everything unhindered and unlimited. You must not use account/channel-wide or per-contact filters on them. Even if each one of them boosts 100 posts per day, you must not filter or disallow their boosts.

Also, if you're on Friendica, Hubzilla or (streams), all of which count and list unread messages, you must not simply mark what has come in from them as read. You must read it all and be interested in it all. This includes all comments on these posts. And yes, you must re-read everything whenever it tries to catch your attention again, e.g. if someone has liked/faved or boosted/reposted/renoted/repeated it.

But even if you receive thousands of comments along with those hundreds of extra posts, you must not comment on these comments. Not unless either a comment mentions you explicitly, or you're mutually connected to whoever wrote the comment. As you wouldn't even receive that comment on Mastodon, replying to it counts as reply-guying and mansplaining on Mastodon, completely regardless of how you comment. It's highly disrespectful, and if Black people are involved, it's racist.

It doesn't matter if this has allegedly been perfectly normal, the standard and part of the culture since five and a half years before Mastodon was launched. Mastodon rules supreme over the whole Fediverse, and only Mastodon's culture has any validity anywhere in the Fediverse. Any culture that differs from Mastodon's is toxic and evil and must be abolished.

Speaking of which, let's suppose you come across one of these many threads in which Black Mastodon users talk with other Black Mastodon users and Mastodon-using allies about how the Fediverse needs to be made safer. In this case, no matter how blatantly obvious it is that all people involved in this thread have no idea of the Fediverse outside Mastodon, you are not allowed to chime in and tell them about places which are safer due to their technological design and how they work.

First of all, it'd be mansplaining and reply-guying. Second, there's a tendency for Black Mastodon users to trust the rest of the Fediverse even less than Mastodon, what with e.g. Nazi instances on Pleroma. And third, your suggestion is likely to be taken for an attempt at nudging them into moving to one specific place, essentially trying to hoard them in a ghetto and segregate them from the rest of the Fediverse. In short, there's letting them wait for the Mastodon instances they're on to improve, and there's racism.

While we're at it: Even if you're on Friendica, Hubzilla or (streams), and you hate Mastodon with a burning passion for very good reasons, you must support Black-led Mastodon instances. Otherwise you're a racist.

Lastly, while I don't have proof for it, I'm pretty sure that everything that counts as racism towards Black users may also count as

- racist towards everyone else who isn't white
- sexist towards everyone who isn't cis-male
- homophobic towards everyone who isn't heterosexual
- transphobic towards trans people
- generally queerphobic towards everyone who isn't cisgender
- ableist towards disabled people, no matter what else you do to include them
- Islamophobic towards Muslims
- anti-Semitic/anti-Judaist towards Jews
- and generally hostile and xenophobic towards all marginalised minorities anywhere in the Fediverse.

I wrote Friendica (actually Mistpark) in 2010. I left the project around 2011-2012 as its original architecture didn't fit what I was trying to do with decentralisation, which is basically anything a centralised network can do plus nomadic identity, because Diaspora lost some really big instances and had no migration tools. Nomadic identity is migration on steroids. You clone your identity to multiple servers, and these are kept in sync so if one instance goes down, you just go to another and shrug it off.

I then created "Red" to do all of those things - nomadic identity, single sign-on, cloud storage, content management, shopping, etc. This later became Hubzilla. So it does nearly all the Friendica things plus more and better. Then about 2018, when ActivityPub and Mastodon first burst onto the scene, a lot of folks said Hubzilla was doing way to much - and it was. But it does all those things. So I cleaned it up and trimmed it down, keeping the best and jettisoning anything that didn't really belong in a social networking app. I also made ActivityPub do a lot of things which we once did in the Zot protocol. Not all of them, but enough to make a very straightforward and feature complete fediverse server. Like everything else, that started with a different name. Then I took the name away. This work resides in a repository called "streams". It's not a project or product or brand, but it's the best fediverse server you never heard of.

Why did I do these things? F*ck brand worship. That and this illusion that everything needs to grow exponentially forever are killing our planet. Anyway if you really want a full featured fediverse server, there are probably others but I've been in this game a very long time and it's pretty darn good and the best I've used. I've tried as many as will let me. Some people don't like the "look", but it's theme-able. You can make it look any way you want. Themes, addons, whatever. Intergated clout storage and permissions, single sign-on, nomadic identity, groups, private groups, moderated groups, circles, events, location services, (checkin, checkout, distance search), channel search which you control, hash tag following, yadda yadda, Post in html, markdown,bbcode or mix them up a bit. Inline SVGs. I could go on for hours, but we've kept it pretty simple. The documentation is a bit lagging, but most people can figure it out. It's more DIY software because we **want** people to make it their own and polish it up in ways we simply don't have time to do. But it's pretty decent out of the box. You don't actually need to do anything. It represents a completely different way of working with the web. Your social network is a different web where instances can be hyper-connected and people don't see the boundaries between instances. You can click on my profile, visit my photo albums and see private photos/vidoes that are only available to you and not get asked for a password or a "home instance".

It uses the ActivityPub API. Not the Mastodon API. We also have the Twitter/Statusnet V1 API and our own API. For apps, it's a PWA. Just visit the site and install it as an app. No play store involved. No missing features between the app and the website.

Our vision isn't large sites supporting thousands or millions or billions of people in their little separate worlds.

It's turning a "million points of light" into a single space with no borders and which is bigger than all of them. And where each individual exercise can exercise their own control over how and with whom they wish to interact and share.

Ich hoffe sehr, dass wir dieses Jahr wieder auf Vinyl releasen können. Leider ist das im Moment so teuer, dass man Preise verlangen müsste, die dann irgendwie nicht mehr „underground“ sind. Mal sehen. So lang wird wohl Streaming eine Rolle spielen. Hat immerhin den Vorteil, dass das auch Menschen hören können, die sich so und so keine Vinylplatte aus Europa leisten könnten und wollten.

Ich freue mich besonders, dass 2022 auch in Afrika paar Zuhörer dazu gekommen sind. Sonst ist mit Abstand Deutschland und die USA unser Zentrum. Seit ein paar Jahren ist Kolumbien eigentlich fast gleichauf. Es muss da eine große Szene geben, zu der wir aber keinen Kontakt haben. Sonst sind alle Kontinente vertreten. Ein gutes Gefühl.

Sonst ist neu, dass in China offensichtlich vermehrt „westliche“ Streamingdienste benutzt. Wir sind da ohnehin bei den China internen Diensten vertreten.

Insgesamt ist es wie immer, wir haben nicht viele Fans dafür gute! Wir achten auf Qualität! 🙂

In other words, DON'T build #Dams - they damage the water flow, the banks, the aquatic animals and the humans that depend on them.
And this study was in #Sweden. Imagine the damage multiplied 1,000-fold in the tropics!
