Joe Biden just did the rarest thing in US politics: he stood up to the oil industry

The Biden administration suspended new permits for natural gas terminals. Can we see more of this kind of backbone?

Ten days ago Joe Biden did something remarkable, and almost without precedent – he actually said no to big oil.

His administration halted the granting of new permits for building liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals, something Washington had been handing out like M&Ms on Halloween for nearly a decade. It’s a provisional “no” – Department of Energy experts will spend the coming months figuring out a new formula for granting the licenses that takes the latest science and economics into account – but you can tell what a big deal it is because of the howls of rage coming from the petroleum industry and its gaggle of politicians.

And you can tell something else too: just how threadbare their arguments have become over time. Biden has called their bluff, and it’s beautiful to watch.

Our System Needs to Be Broken, and He Is the Man to Do It’ - POLITICO here

I used to believe the system was broken. I now believe it has been functioning the way its intended and needs to be broken. I don't know if Trump 47 is the right man to do it, but I will do what I have always done: support the candidate with whom I most agree on the issues, regardless of their chance of winning, and let chips lie where they will.

Right now that would be Libertarian Jacob Hornberger but there is a lot of time between now and November. Trump, Biden & Hornberger are all over 70 years old, health becomes a real concern & all three major parties could end up with different nominees.

I've been asking who people see as possible #POTUS with such traits as experience, intelligence,
calm, resourceful, compassionate, #charismatic to bring us forward through vastly complex troubled times.

So far there has not been much response, but these people have been seen by some:

Pete Buttigieg
Michele Obama
Katie Porter
Jon Stewart

https://www.hrw.org/news/2023/07/05/hate-speech-modi-supporters-belies-his-claims-indian-democracy-during-us-visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United States included yoga at the United Nations, an address to the U.S. Congress that promised strides in the bilateral partnership, and a lavish state dinner at the White House with 400 guests. President Joe Biden spoke of the “unlimited potential” of ties between India and the United States.

History repeats itself.

Some thousand years ago, the #pope:

The Papal Dictates were radical in two major ways. First of all, they elevated the bishop of Rome above all other bishoprics, creating the modern #papacy. Clause 3 ruled that the pope alone had the #power of investiture to appoint bishops or to depose or reinstate them. Reinforcing this, Clause 25 gave the right of appointing (or deposing) bishops to the pope, not to local rulers. And Clause 12 gave the pope the right to depose emperors, following Clause 9, obliging “all princes to kiss the feet of the Pope alone” in order to be deemed legitimate rulers.

Today the #POTUS:

Likewise today, U.S. diplomats claim the right to name who should be recognized as a nation’s head of state. In 1953 they overthrew Iran’s elected leader and replaced him with the Shah’s military dictatorship. That principle gives U.S. diplomats the right to sponsor “color revolutions” for regime-change, such as their sponsorship of Latin American military dictatorships creating client oligarchies to serve U.S. corporate and financial interests. The 2014 coup in Ukraine is just the latest exercise of this U.S. right to appoint and depose leaders.
