London houseboat residents fear rise in mooring fees will price them out

The #Canal and River Trust (CRT) has raised mooring fees at some sites it owns by 10% for two years in a row. The Conservative government previously announced a £300m cut in funding to the trust, due from 2027. For many permanently moored in centrally located marinas, fees have shot up by thousands of pounds.

In Ice Wharf Marina, situated along Regent’s Canal in London near King’s Cross station, the annual #mooring fees have risen by more than 50% in the past nine years. In 2015, residents could expect to pay about £8,850 for the year with a 10% early payment discount. Now the discount has been cut to 2% and residents face an annual bill of about £15,000.

Children across the UK are getting shorter, fatter and sicker amid an #epidemic of poor diets, food insecurity and poverty, according to a report warning that millions are facing a “timebomb” of avoidable health conditions.

The average height of five-year-olds is falling, obesity levels have increased by almost a third and the number of young people being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes has risen by more than a fifth, the report by the Food Foundation said.

Aggressive marketing of cheap ultra-processed food, diets lacking essential nutrition and high levels of poverty and deprivation are driving the “significant decline” in children’s health, researchers found.

Rise in hospital ‘corridor care’ is national emergency, union warns

Overcrowding is forcing hospitals to treat so many patients in corridors and storerooms that it constitutes a “national emergency”, the UK’s nursing union has said.

The growing and widespread practice is endangering patients’ safety by leaving them without oxygen or easily able to attract staff’s attention, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) warned.

“Corridor care” also deprives patients of their dignity because they have to undergo intimate examinations in view of others and do not have easy access to a toilet, it added.

Hospitals become so stretched that some patients have died while being looked after in what the #RCN said were “inappropriate areas”, which can also include car parks and fracture rooms.

Hospital admissions for waterborne diseases in England up 60%, report shows

The analysis follows widespread anger after record sewage spills were revealed this week. Environment Agency data showed that raw #sewage was discharged for more than 3.6m hours into rivers and seas last year – a 129% increase on the previous 12 months.

But how to fix it? Three seismic shifts have unfolded over the last decade.

First, the welfare safety net has been systematically shredded, with the government abandoning responsibilities taken for granted since 1945.

Second, charities and food banks, which have taken over from universal credit as the last line of defence, are exhausted and justifiably angry about having to pick up the pieces with insufficient resources. They even fear their desperate relief efforts could provide cover for the government walking further away.

Third, unsure how they fit into a poverty-free, pollution-free future, the corporate sector has in the last decade donated less, not more.

A new report has urged UK authorities to make a raft of improvements inside immigrant detention centres, including detention conditions and staffing issues.

That's according to a new report by the European Committee for the Prevention of #Torture (CPT) released on Thursday.

During a visit to the country between March and April 2023, it flagged up several issues surrounding the uncertainty of how long migrants will be detained, "prison-like" conditions in centres and the treatment of those displaying symptoms of mental illness.

The UK government blasted the report, saying it did not "recognise much" of its content.

Tories’ council fund is cynical pre-election sticking plaster

Angela Rayner has accused the Conservatives of cynically applying a “sticking plaster” to council finances to get through the next election, as local authority leaders warn that more will go bust next year.

The shadow communities secretary said Labour was “under no illusions” about the financial mess it would inherit in local councils if it gained power, after the Tories “took a sledgehammer” to budgets for more than a decade.

Scrapping furniture safety regulations will cost dozens of lives a year, warns fire union

Under the current rules – introduced as the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 – manufacturers must submit furniture to independent testing on flammability. The regulations are estimated to have saved between 50 and 70 lives per year.

But now the Westminster government has proposed scrapping these rules in favour of a voluntary regime. Consultation on the plans closed earlier this year and ministers are now considering proposals.

The union warned that the government was using the pretext of dealing with lithium batteries and other hazards to launch a dangerous programme of deregulation.
