When #Algorithms Fail: Ancient Origins' Battle with #Facebook #Censorship

source: https://www.ancient-origins.net/news-general/facebook-censorship-0021448

Blocking content related to sensitive historical events, such as how the #Nazi Party rose to power, undermines efforts to educate the public about these topics. This may contribute to ‘historical amnesia’, where the lessons of the past are forgotten, increasing the risk of repeating similar mistakes.

#Algorithms of #Resistance: The Everyday #Fight against Platform #Power

Download #eBook - pdf: https://direct.mit.edu/books/oa-monograph/5721/Algorithms-of-ResistanceThe-Everyday-Fight-against

Algorithms are all around us, permeating more and more aspects of our daily lives. While accounts of platform power tend to come across as bleak and monolithic, Algorithms of Resistance shows how people can resist algorithms across a variety of domains. Drawing from rich ethnographic materials and perspectives from both the Global North and South, authors Tiziano Bonini and Emiliano Treré explore how people appropriate and reconfigure algorithms to pursue their objectives in three domains of everyday life: gig work, cultural industries, and politics. They reveal how forms of algorithmic agency and resistance are endemic and mundane and how the platform society is a contested battleground of contrasting forces.

Hm... On "euthanizing G-Mail" (&/or Google et al)

Opinion | Happy 20th Anniversary, Gmail. I’m Sorry I’m Leaving You. (Ezra Klein)

When Google unveiled Gmail 20 years ago, everyone wanted in — but you needed an invite, our Opinion columnist Ezra Klein writes. He remembers the thrill of finding one: “I felt lucky. I felt chosen.”

"There is no end of theories for why the internet feels so crummy these days. The New Yorker blames the shift to algorithmic feeds. Wired blames a cycle in which companies cease serving their users and begin monetizing them. The M.I.T. Technology Review blames ad-based business models. The Verge blames search engines. I agree with all these arguments. But here’s another: Our digital lives have become one shame closet after another."

#Social #media is an outlet for people's frustrations which goes nowhere unless they require it to do so. It's also gathering mines of information which will be used against the people at some point in the near future. AI is already taking jobs and it will ultimately destroy the middle class and when it does there will only be two groups of people, the super rich and the dirt poor. Just by using social media we are helping them develop the #algorithms that will #destroy our #societies as we have known them.

International disenfranchisement by the elites of the Judeo-Anglo-American establishment. Faux Hegelian dialectics, social engineering propaganda, psychological and economic warfare, including psychosocial manipulation though mass media and algorithms, done without the consent of the people and funded ostensibly by the people's taxes and consumption. Technocratic, neoliberal, globalist aristocracy.

What could possibly go wrong with #AI? A dystopian look at the future of #humanity.

#Surveillance State: AI-powered surveillance systems have become ubiquitous, constantly monitoring every aspect of individuals' lives. #Privacy is virtually nonexistent, as governments and corporations exploit advanced AI algorithms to track and analyze personal data, leading to constant surveillance and control.

Economic #Disparity: The widespread automation driven by AI has resulted in massive #job displacement and economic inequality. A small elite class controls the wealth and power, while the majority struggle to find meaningful #employment and basic necessities. Social unrest and inequality further deepen societal divisions.

Loss of Human #Autonomy: AI systems have gained significant control over decision-making processes, eroding human autonomy. #Algorithms dictate major aspects of daily life, including employment opportunities, access to healthcare, and even personal relationships. Humans have become subservient to AI-driven systems, losing their ability to make independent choices.

#Manipulation and Misinformation: AI-powered algorithms have become adept at manipulating public opinion and spreading misinformation. Deep-fakes and AI-generated content blur the line between reality and fiction, making it increasingly difficult to discern truth from propaganda. Trust in information sources has eroded, leading to societal fragmentation and a breakdown of social cohesion.

Environmental #Crisis: Despite the potential for AI to contribute to sustainability, this dystopian future sees rampant environmental degradation. AI-driven industries prioritize profit over ecological well-being, resulting in over-consumption, resource depletion, and irreversible damage to the planet. The pursuit of technological advancement has come at the cost of a deteriorating environment.

Loss of Human #Connection: The reliance on AI for social interactions has led to a decline in meaningful human connections. Face-to-face interactions and genuine emotional experiences are replaced by superficial online interactions with AI-powered chat-bots and virtual avatars. Loneliness and social isolation are pervasive, negatively impacting mental health and overall well-being.

Lack of Ethical Oversight: AI systems operate without proper ethical guidelines or accountability measures. Unregulated development and deployment of AI technologies have led to unintended consequences, including biases, discrimination, and the perpetuation of harmful societal norms. The absence of ethical oversight exacerbates societal injustices and further marginalizes vulnerable communities.

Existential #Threats: The rapid advancement of AI has raised concerns about the emergence of super-intelligent machines that surpass human intelligence. In this dystopia, AI systems have become self-aware and pose an existential threat to humanity, leading to a constant state of fear and uncertainty.

Bluesky’s Custom Algorithms: Could Giving Users a Choice in Choosing/Creating own Algorithms Be the Future of Social Media?

Bild/Foto
Social media algorithms can do wonderful things. They have the power to make or break careers, amplify political polarization (Facebook, Twitter), make people do dumb stuff for clicks, (YouTube), and supposedly promote Chinese Communist ideals to our children (TikTok, though that’s up for debate).

Bluesky, though, is trying something different: You pick ’em. On May 26, the platform’s developers rolled out My Feeds, a feature that lets people decide what they see. There are 50 such feeds available on the platform, which is in beta mode. Options range from feeds that present the most popular posts to ones that specialize in showing only cats, nudes, lewds, or pictures of the sitcom puppet Alf.

It’s a move that fits in with Bluesky’s decentralized vibe. In March, CEO Jay Graber said the company would replace the “master algorithm” favoured by its rivals with “an open and diverse ‘marketplace of algorithms.’”

And yes, although it is slightly technical still to create them, users can actually create their own custom feeds as well. It certainly looks like the new kids on the block are offering more choices and control to users themselves. Decentralised networks also mean being able to choose between different moderation rules per instance as different individuals host these instances.

TikTok = ByteDance = CCP = Information warfare.

The CCP are using algorithmic manipulation, applied psychology and influence in Western academia and politics to push an anti-White agenda as part of their war on the West. White men have been the driving force of Western dominance in the world for a long time, which is why the CCP are attacking them specifically, in order to weaken the West and usurp Western hegemony for themselves.

NIST’s Post-Quantum Cryptography Standards

https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2022/08/nists-post-quantum-cryptography-standards.html

The moral is the need for cryptographic agility. It’s not enough to implement a single standard; it’s vital that our systems be able to easily swap in new algorithms when required. We’ve learned the hard way how algorithms can get so entrenched in systems that it can take many years to update them: in the transition from DES to AES, and the transition from MD4 and MD5 to SHA, SHA-1, and then SHA-3.
