'Pure fiction' — Kremlin denies Putin and Trump discussed Ukraine by phone after election victory

Which liar to believe?

The Kremlin has denied reports that President-elect Donald Trump spoke directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone on Nov. 7, branding the claim " pure fiction."

Washington Post (WP) citing sources familiar with the matter, reported on Nov. 10 that the call took place, claiming Trump advised Putin not to escalate the war in Ukraine, and highlighted Washington’s significant military presence in Europe.

Speaking on Nov. 11, #Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the reports.

"This is the most vivid example of the quality of the information that is now published, sometimes even in fairly respected publications," he told Interfax.

"This is completely untrue. This is pure fiction, this is just false information."

Poland urges EU to combat Russian disinformation in US, Reuters reports

Experts have warned that Russian propaganda efforts in the U.S. are intensifying ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

"At this critical moment in history, it is imperative that we collectively take swift and robust action to strengthen the transatlantic relations through strategic communication about the E.U. in the U.S.," the paper reportedly says.

Poland warned that Russia's #propaganda aims to create tensions between the U.S. and the E.U., and said that it is critical for the E.U. to counter this messaging with #American audiences.

"This means scaling up our de-bunking and, even more importantly, pre-bunking of Russian disinformation and launching campaigns which set the record straight about where Europe stands today and about the benefits of diplomacy, collective security and open society," the paper says.

Why did the Russian disinformation machine target French voters?

What do fake news on Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska's multimillion-euro sports car purchase and made-up offers of money to vote for President Emmanuel Macron in the French snap elections have in common?

They were all cooked up by the Kremlin in what is an ongoing all-out assault on French public opinion, researchers claim.

Scores of freshly registered websites, some made to look like mainstream outlets, have been publishing everything from deepfakes to generative AI writing impersonate fringe content and reports on real-world acts of subversion.

Russian legal foundation working in EU is actually 'Kremlin influence operation'

Leaked documents from the #Russian Fund for Support and Protection of the Rights of Compatriots Living Abroad (Pravfond) show that the purported legal foundation is actually a Kremlin-linked disinformation outlet, the Guardian and other media outlets reported on June 2.

#Pravfond describes its goal as providing "Russian compatriots with comprehensive legal and other necessary support in cases of violation of their rights, freedoms, and legitimate interests."

According to the leaked documents, Pravfond helped pay legal fees for convicted Russian arms smuggler Viktor Bout and assassin Vadim Krasikov, who is currently serving a prison sentence in Germany for the murder of a Georgian-Chechen dissident in 2019.

Pravfond also reportedly employs several former Russian intelligence operatives and has spent millions of dollars on #disinformation campaigns in almost 50 countries in #Europe and the rest of the world.

Estonia's security service characterized Pravfond in 2020 as a "pseudo legal protection system" that "in reality is an influence operations fund."

No Ukrainian POWs on crashed Russian Il-76 aircraft

"I can definitely tell you that our prisoners were not there," said Danilov during the interview.

A Russian Il-76 transport aircraft crashed in Russia's Belgorod Oblast on Jan. 24, which Russia claimed was transporting 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) for an exchange.

Russia has yet to provide evidence that there were any POWs on the downed aircraft.

After Russia began circulating its claims, Ukraine requested that Russia return the bodies of the killed POWs home.

Russia's government never responded to the appeal. Russia also reportedly blocked the International Committee of Red Cross from investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Zelensky invites Trump to Ukraine, claims presidential candidate 'can't manage this war'

Responding to Trump’s claim that he could end Russia’s war in Ukraine in 24 hours, Zelensky said he would prove to the former U.S. president that he couldn’t.

“If he can come here, I will need 24 minutes — yes, 24 minutes. Not more. Yes. Not more - 24 minutes to explain [to] President Trump that he can’t manage this war,” the Ukrainian leader said.

“President Biden was here, and I think he understood some details which you can understand only being here.”

Russia lied about ship inspection in Black Sea

Note: The image displayed is independent from this article. The map image shows the track of the cargo ship during and after the alleged event. The speed of the Sukru Okan remained between 7.2 and 9.8 knots during the displayed track. The track will be available for a few days after which it will only be available to those with a paid account at #MarineTraffic Ref: https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:29.8/centery:44.7/zoom:9

InformNapalm, a Ukrainian open-source intelligence outfit, reported on Aug. 13 that the Russian authorities had lied about a Russian ship firing warning shots in the Black Sea earlier on the same day.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Aug. 13 that Vasily Bykov, a Russian patrol boat, had fired warning shots after the captain of the Palau-flagged cargo ship #SukruOkan failed to respond to a request to inspect the vessel.

According to InformNapalm, the ministry also lied about the successful inspection of the vessel.

“Sukru Okan did not comply with the demand to stop, but temporarily changed its course in the direction of Turkish territorial waters,” the report reads. “There was no helicopter and no warning shots either. There were only threats from the Russians over the radio.”

Russian high-school textbooks promote war in Ukraine

Russia's Education Ministry introduced updated history textbooks that include segments about the war in Ukraine that Russia calls a “special military operation,” the annexation of Crimea, and Western sanctions, CNN reports on Aug. 9.

The recently published textbooks incorporate maps depicting occupied Ukrainian areas as Russian territories, endorsing Russian officials' narrative that Ukrainians and Russians are "one people." Ukraine is also portrayed in the textbooks as an "ultranationalist state" where all things Russian are regarded hostile and persecuted.

Conspiracy theories and disinformation mar UK local election

Conspiratorial narratives and rampant misinformation were used to influence the result of a recent local election in the United Kingdom, Euronews has learnt.

Ahead of the Uxbridge and South Ruislip byelection in July - which saw the Conservatives narrowly beat the opposition Labour Party by some 500 votes - there was a dramatic increase in false claims and conspiracy theories around ULEZ, a controversial environmental policy.

Wagner chief says Ukraine never threatened to attack Russia

The head of the Wagner mercenary group has said Ukraine never threatened to attack Russia, as the #Kremlin claimed when attempting to justify its invasion.

The statement by Yevgeny #Prigozhin dramatically raises the stakes in his battle with Russian military chiefs.

In a video message, Prigozhin said: "We exchanged fire: we hit them, they hit us. This was happening all these long eight years, from 2014 to 2022.

"At some points, the number of strikes, the exchange of fire, was increasing, at others - it was decreasing. By February 24 [2022] there was nothing extraordinary.

"Now the Ministry of Defence is trying to deceive the public; trying to deceive the president and is telling the story that there was insane aggression from Ukraine and they [Ukraine] were going to attack us, together with the entire #NATO bloc.

"The special operation that began on February 24 was launched for completely different reasons."

370 pro-Russian disinformation sites discovered in Bulgaria

An analysis by the Sofia-based Human and Social Studies Foundation identified 370 websites spreading Russian propaganda and disinformation, Euractiv wrote on June 20.

The research, presented last week in Sofia, indicated that the fast growth of the so-called "mushroom sites" is one of the causes of the rapid spread of Russian propaganda in the country.

Mushroom sites are online media websites created in bulk by malicious actors to spread propaganda and disinformation.

"In 2022, Russian propaganda spread powerfully in the Bulgarian online space. Compared to the previous year, 2021, by the end of 2022, it rose almost 20 times. Propaganda increased in two periods – at the beginning and the end of the year," Euractiv cited the analysis.

Green MP, Caroline Lucas flagged by disinformation unit over Covid criticism

The Tory government “has dangerously blurred the lines between genuine disinformation and legitimate political dissent”.

The Green party MP Caroline Lucas has called for an inquiry into a government unit intended to combat disinformation after it emerged she had been flagged by it for criticisms of ministers and government policy over Covid.

Lucas, who lodged a subject access request along with the campaign group Big Brother Watch for details held on her by the counter-disinformation unit (CDU), said her inclusion in a series of reports amounted to “staggering overreach” by ministers.
