#Fact Check: Are U.S. #Troops on the Ground in #Ukraine? YES!

A Military.com report cited comments by Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder that the inspectors would not be near the #frontline, and that "Ukrainians are working very closely with us to provide insight and tracking of those capabilities in places where it's not safe for U.S. personnel to go."

U.S. troops in Ukraine departed on February 14, 10 days before the #invasion, apart from those who provide security in the U.S. #Embassy in #Kyiv.

Almost from the very beginning of the ‘special military operation’, observers mentioned the possibility of a split among the Russian elites into supporters of a more aggressive #military engagement and proponents of a more peaceful resolution of the conflict. According to these observers, such an #elite split could at the very least have helped put an end to the hostilities and could have eventually brought down the Russian regime. However, nothing of the sort has happened. Moreover, despite the recent deterioration of the situation on the frontline and the withdrawal of Russian troops from eastern and southern #Ukraine, there is no reason to expect a split among the Russian elites in the foreseeable future.

The “conflict”, i.e. the armed invasion, started in southern #Ukraine when the Russian #army occupied #Crimea in February 2014. The Russian-inspired separatist #uprising in the east started later, in about a month.
It was clear to us from the beginning that Russia could not do any good in Ukraine. By 2014, a reactionary authoritarian regime had already been established in #Russia that denied all individual and social rights and brutally persecuted and destroyed all independent activity. Of course, we still have many questions about the Ukrainian state and the ruling class in Ukraine. But at least the anarchist movement, the socialist movement in Ukraine was able to operate relatively freely for some years. It suffices to say that throughout the existence of the independent Ukrainian state, there has not been a single political anarchist prisoner here. At the same time, many dozens of our comrades in Russia ended up in Russian prisons – guilty solely for their anarchist convictions. So, we were well aware of what #Putin did for libertarian ideas.
The #RKAS reaction was therefore irreversible: it was necessary to resist the Russian attack by all means.

anyway, what a pity

Chinese President #XiJinping reappeared on state television Tuesday (Sep 27) after a several-day absence from public view that sparked rumours about the 69-year-old leader’s political fortunes.
#Xi was shown visiting a display at the #Beijing Exhibition Hall on the theme of Forging Ahead into the New Era.
Accompanied by Premier Li Keqiang and other top leaders, Xi, who is also head of the ruling Communist Party and the People’s Liberation #Army, viewed some of the displays and commented on China’s economic progress over the past decade.
The visit was Xi’s first appearance on television since he returned from a regional summit in #Uzbekistan last weekend.
Under Chinese pandemic regulations, he would need to stay in quarantine for a week after returning.

Statement by Israeli conscientious objector Nave Shabtay

I held a gun in my hands before I was 10 years old.

You could say I was raised in the Israeli army, or at least in the spirit of the Israeli Army. My father, who was a #military officer during most of my childhood, took my sister and me to his military base on weekends. There I held a gun, entered tanks, and collected gun bullets lying on the ground. As a child, that was cool! I also grew up without a grandfather. From very early on, on every national Memorial Day, I would skip the school ceremony to attend the grave of my grandfather who was killed in the 1973 war (The Yom Kippur War). I was nurtured on the #glory of the #army and on war-related bereavement.

But as the years went by, I became more aware, and I started to attend demonstrations against the #occupation with my mother. When I was at high school we started visiting Sheikh Jarrah, where I met families that stood to lose all they had, and to end up in the streets with their children as a result of the #Jerusalem municipality campaign, jointly with the settlers to empty Jerusalem of #Palestinians. Among other things, I saw a fence that settlers had build through a private Palestinian backyard, and the #police who were securing it, prevening all from entering, until we ourselves yanked it from the ground. In Sheikh Jarrah, the police stopped and interrogated me for the sole reason that I had a Palestinian flag. Almost weekly, police violently seize flags from the protestors.

Although I was raised in a #militaristic family, where the army was a sacred cow, and although I was told in school that soldiers are heroes, I never wanted to enlist in the army. My unwillingness to enlist, was transformed over the years to the act of active refusal of the draft and the more I realized what soldiers really do. I realized that there is an entire system, military, economic and ideological, whose task is to preserve the occupation and the #oppression of the Palestinians.

This year, during the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, tens of masked #settlers went to Masafer Yatta, threw stones at the Palestinian residents, at their children and at their houses. Windshields were smashed, and many people injured, including a three-year-old child who was injured in his head. This event was not unique. It was just one more day in the violent reality that the population in Masafer Yatta endure, where attacks by settlers are a daily occurrence.

And where is the #army in this story? The same one I was expected to enlist in? Where are the heroic #soldiers that we hear of? In almost every #violent incident perpetrated by settlers the army, under the best of circumstances, does nothing. More frequently, however, it enables, supports and even provides weapons and backup to the settlers. This is the occupation – this #violence is not a bug, it is a feature. The state, the army, and the settlers have the same purpose – in Masaffer Yatta and throughout the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories: the creation of territorial continuity in Israeli control that cuts the West Bank into pieces. These aims – territorial control and the removal of the Palestinians – has led to the biggest population transfer since 1967, taking place as we speak in Masafer Yatta. The army and the settlers are equal partners in this project.

The occupation and the oppression of the Palestinians are closely linked to Israeli #capitalism. For the Israeli elites, the occupation is #profitable. Israeli Weapon companies make millions from selling #weapons to regimes such as Yemen and the United Arabs Emirates. Weapons that are sold after they were tried on Gaza and the West Bank – and are promoted by the misery, the poverty, and the death that it had created. As well, the occupation is profitable – as a device to abuse Palestinian workers. Israeli #corporations and wealthy people employ Palestinians both, in the occupied territories and inside Israel, and #abuse them with long working hours and low salaries, taking advantage of the fact that the Palestinians have no way to secure their rights. In that way the rich profit directly from the oppression of the Palestinians people.

The #narrative of the country perpetuated through the educational system provides a narrow #colonialist view on history and on the reality in the state of #Israel. It tells us that the country was built by heroic pioneers, without ever discussing what and who was here before. It tells us about villages and cities that were built, but not how Palestinian lands were bought and their inhabitants banished. It creates a false unity of Jewish interests with the Jewish rich, rather than with the Palestinians. It tries to make us think that the occupation benefits us, the Jewish workers, in order to eliminate any possibility of true solidarity with the Palestinians or bringing an end to the #occupation – all of which stands to hurt in their pocket.

We live in a country that call itself self enlightened and liberal, "the only democracy in the middle east", but at the same time, runs a murderous #apartheid regime and commits war crimes regularly and systematically. Israel implements policies of house demolitions, journalists’ killings, of breaking into homes, mass arrests, the arrest of children, collective punishments; illegal #settlements, a siege on #Gaza and much more on a daily basis. This country exploits our personal loss and pain over the people we loved and who died because of this cruel reality, to further its #propaganda.

As humans we must resist this reality. As humans we must refuse to demolish homes, arrest children, and refuse the destructive reality that Palestinians live in. As humans we must make amends for the wrongs of the past of the occupation and the Nakba.

As workers we must show #solidarity and #cooperation with Palestinian workers, and fight against the rich that profit from our #expolitation.

As potential army inductees, this is our opportunity not only to serve the country and the army. It is our opportunity to support the fight for #justice, #peace, and #equality. Whether through psychological disqualification, by appealing to the army’s conscientious objection’s committee or through serving jail sentences, we refuse to serve in the occupation army. We must fight for a better future. It will not be easy. Our opponents are strong. However, where there is #oppression, there is also #brotherhood and #solidarity, and that no one can take from us.

In solidarity,

Nave

The behavior of both the Kremlin and the #Defense #Ministry is the latest disappointment for patriots and Russian nationalists, who have offered scathing #criticism on some of the leading pro-war #Telegram channels. Within the “fog of war,” patriotic Russian channels – many of which are run by people on the front lines or who have good sources in the Russian forces and are often unconcerned about #military #censorship – are almost the principal sources of #information about the true state of affairs at the #front.

Generally speaking, in August 2021, the Russian Armed Forces had 168 battalion tactical groups (BTGs). These are the ‘permanent readiness’ forces that were more trained and equipped for combat operations than any other. Considering that the number of personnel in each BTG was 800 to 1,000, the total number of Russian ‘permanent readiness’ troops fell in the range of 134,500 to 168,000 on the eve of the #war. At the same time, it is worth remembering that the total invasion force initially numbered 190,000 men, which, alongside BTGs, also included battlefield-ready National Guard units, with ‘Kadyrov’s men’ among them, and the units recruited in the #Donetsk and #Luhansk regions. At the same time, it is still difficult to provide an estimate of the reserves that #Russia had at that time, but it is unlikely to exceed an additional 100,000 men for the armed forces. Considering that these reserves were used by the end of the fifth month of the war, the US #military believe that #Moscow had already engaged 85% of the total available army, one way or another. Hence, the loss of 70,000−80,000 men, whether killed or wounded, in the context of the ongoing war raises the question of whether such an #army can ever return home.

The Russian aggression undermines the achievements of Ukrainian feminists in the struggle against political and social #oppression. In the occupied territories, the Russian #army uses mass rape and other forms of gender-based #violence as a #military strategy. The establishment of the Russian regime in these territories poses the threat of criminalizing #LGBTIQ+ people and decriminalizing domestic violence. Throughout #Ukraine, the problem of domestic violence is becoming more acute. Vast destruction of civilian infrastructure, threats to the #environmental, #inflation, shortages, and population displacement endanger social reproduction. The #war intensifies gendered division of #labor, further shifting the #work of social #reproduction – in especially difficult and precarious conditions – onto #women. Rising #unemployment and the neoliberal government’s attack on labor rights continue to exacerbate social problems. Fleeing from the war, many women* are forced to leave the country, and find themselves in a vulnerable position due to barriers to housing, social infrastructure, stable income, and medical services (including contraception and #abortion). They are also at risk of getting trapped into #sextrafficking.

The #war has turbocharged this criticism. #Russia is advancing slowly in eastern #Ukraine thanks to its advantage in #artillery. But it is a grinding campaign rather than one of bold armoured manoeuvre. Russia has lost at least 774 tanks since invading Ukraine, according to a count by Oryx, a blog which tracks the war. Around half of those were destroyed, a third were captured by Ukraine and most of the rest were abandoned. This implies that Russia has lost around a quarter of its estimated pre-war inventory of almost 3,000 tanks. Some elite units, such as the 4th Guards Tank Division, appear to have lost an even higher proportion. Vladimir #Putin envisaged his tanks rolling into #Kyiv; instead they ended up bogged down on the city’s outskirts, before being forced to retreat.
The battles of the last three months have underlined two potent threats to armoured vehicles. One is the anti-tank guided missile (ATGM). Its destructive potential has been clear since the Yom Kippur war of 1973, when #Egypt’s Soviet-made Sagger ATGMs smashed Israeli tanks. A memo written by the American #army after the war assessed that the Sagger, if not disrupted, had a 60% chance of achieving a “kill” against an M60 tank from as far as two miles out.

#History: The oldest known #war #propaganda is more than 3000 years old

source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kadesh

The #Battle of #Kadesh or Battle of Qadesh took place between the forces of the New #Kingdom of #Egypt under #Ramesses II and the #Hittite #Empire under Muwatalli II at the city of Kadesh on the Orontes River, just upstream of Lake Homs near the modern Lebanon–Syria border. The battle is generally dated to 1274 BC.

...

There is no consensus about the outcome or what took place, with views ranging from an Egyptian #victory to a draw, or, in the view of Iranian Egyptologist Mehdi #Yarahmadi, an Egyptian defeat, with the Egyptian accounts being simply propaganda. The Hittite #army was ultimately forced to retreat, but the Egyptians were unsuccessful in capturing Kadesh.

The Ukrainian challenge is different than that facing the Russians. The Ukrainians are defending, and they have had deep experience in this type of operation in the #Donbas region since the invasion in 2014. Whether or not they can take the offensive at any scale in the future remains to be seen.
The Russo-Ukrainian War, as of May 24, is only three months old, which is short by the standards of any major #war. One could usefully recall that it took from July 7 to September 26 in 1941 for the German assault on the #SovietUnion in Operation Barbarossa to reach and take #Kyiv. The current war appears to be evolving into a protracted war of attrition. Therefore, the Russian strategy of limited maneuver and a heavy reliance on fires may yet be sound. They seem to be learning, as Russia analyst Michael Kofman pointed out in a recent War on the Rocks podcast. This protraction of major combat operations is also beyond the experience of serving Western officers.
At the beginning of the war, Russia’s active-duty personnel and major #weapons systems allocated to the invasion significantly outnumbered that of Ukraine almost two-to-one. Accurate casualty and materiel loss data is difficult to obtain, particularly from Ukraine, where the data is understandably considered a national secret. Nevertheless, if the numbers being reported by each combatant are in the ballpark, then these running estimates show both sides are suffering significant levels of attrition, most importantly in personnel.
If this is true, then Ukraine is potentially in serious trouble if the war continues much longer.

In late March, scores of contract soldiers from #SouthOssetia refused to fight in #Ukraine and left for their homes. According to our source, all of the objectors’ contracts had been voided shortly after. Still, almost a hundred soldiers returned, and some of them will be sent back to the #war zone. Some twenty contract soldiers challenged their dismissals in court. After the return to the self-declared republic, the soldiers had a meeting with South #Ossetia's President Anatoly Bibilov. They described insufferable conditions, broken equipment, and the absence of higher-ups at the front lines. Bibilov expressly advised against any recording of the conversation, yet the exchange was recorded anyway. We publish excerpts translated from Ossetian by a native speaker.
