São Paulo (de stad, niet de deelstaat) viert vandaag haar 470-jarig bestaan. Het is een cliché om daar een foto van hoogbouw bij te plaatsen, maar het is een feit dat São Paulo een stad van veel, en steeds meer hoogbouw is. De gewone huizen die er nog zijn en lage flatgebouwen worden steeds vaker afgebroken en vervangen door torenflats. De zogenoemde verticalisering van de stad.
De gebouwen hierboven staan aan de beroemde Avenida Paulista in São Paulo, die gisteren (en veel vaker) ook al op dit weblog stond. Zangeres Vânia Bastos bezingt de Avenida in dit lied van Eduardo Gudin (tekst onder de video):

Overdag op zondag is de anders drukke Avenida Paulista in São Paulo autovrij en wordt daar gewandeld, gefietst en zo meer. Je kunt er zelfs een skatende hond tegen komen. (Foto groter door erop te klikken.)
Vandaag de dag is de Avenida Paulista een straat vol met hoogbouw en veel verkeer (op andere dagen dan zondag). Maar ooit was het een boomrijke avenida waar de steenrijke koffiebaronnen hun villa’s hadden:<br clear="all"></br>

Monday marks one year since thousands of right-wing protesters draped in the colors of the Brazilian flag stormed into Brazil’s Congress, Supreme Court and presidential offices with a violent fury and the goal of overturning an election.
Saturday marked three years since thousands of Americans did just about the same thing.
They were two shocking attacks on the Western Hemisphere’s two largest democracies, both broadcast around the world and both prompted by presidents who had questioned their legitimate election losses. Each posed an extraordinary test of the country’s democracy, and each raised the question of how a deeply polarized society would move forward in the wake of such an assault.
With time, the answer to that question is becoming clear: The parallel attacks have had nearly opposite aftermaths.
