What one observes predominantly in the fundamentalist Christian and evangelical countries is the peculiar pre-Enlightenment thought that the Word can change the world. Blunt neoplatonism and bourgeois idealism, which one thought to have overcome at least in the scientific world. Those who believe that the world can be changed by spells, invocations or non-speech are back in the age of magic and spells.
Free speech is thus considered dangerous and must be stopped, racism is fought by not using words, and inequality by rearranging words. Of course, it is immediately obvious to any rational person that this is the most despicable superstition and that the world is changed by action. But this backwardness is also partly shared by people who are not religiously fanatical.
