You'd think the opposition in #Israel would have something sensible to say, right? Think again.
Yair Lapid, head of the opposition, wrote an opinion piece in Ha'Aretz titled "Everyone is wrong, we're right, but..."
He starts by listing some of Israel's political 'achievements' this week:
an unprecedented letter from Washington, signed by the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, with a threat of an arms embargo; The continuation of the public confrontation with French President Macron; Foreign Minister Israel Katz declares the UN Secretary General an "undesirable personality"; And the president of Italy - the most right-wing leader in Western Europe - attacked Israel harshly in parliament.
He goes on to say, with no irony, that Israel is always right:
Israel is right in all these conflicts. They don't understand. They don't see our existential struggle, the kind of enemies we face...
And then explains that Israel needs better diplomacy and foreign relations. Including:
Another problem is that Israel promises things and does not deliver. Time after time, discussions were held, our most senior ranks promised things, both on the issue of humanitarian aid and on security issues - and then the exact opposite happened. Relations between countries, and also personal relations between leaders, are based on trust. At the moment, this trust is greatly eroded with the US... Countries like Germany, the second largest arms exporter to Israel, are very particular about credibility in their foreign relations. They expect their allies to behave in the same way.
Got that? The problem with promising humanitarian aid and not delivering is that it's bad for foreign relations. Not that people in Gaza desperately need food and water. I can't even.
Excuse my while I bang my head against the wall.
