Defend the Right UK to Strike - Enough is Enough

The right to strike is under threat.

New legislation proposed by the Tory government intends to override a workers’ right to withdraw their labour, forcing them to work against their will.

The right to strike is a fundamental democratic right. It underpins our ability to win dignity in the workplace and earn a decent standard of living.

It is no accident that this right is under attack at the very moment the public is fighting back against the cost-of-living squeeze.

This government is determined to force workers to pay the price for a crisis caused by the greed of the elite yet again. We won’t accept it.

Well, dedicated New York Times readers might consider an alternate plan for Thursday... &/or showing support for NYT's workers.

Just in: New York Times CEO confirms in all staff email that members of the NewsGuild will go on a 24-hour strike Thursday.

US Railroad Workers ‘Under the Thumb’

https://www.counterpunch.org/2022/12/05/us-railroad-workers-under-the-thumb/

'This past week both the administration and Congress have made a #railroad #strike #illegal by passing legislation to that effect. Railroad workers in the US have always been a target of government #strike-prevention. The RailwayLaborAct in 1926 set the pattern that was taken up for the rest of the US labor-force with Taft-Hartley in 1947 and all #anti-strike measures that followed.

The current 2022 railroad negotiations and government intervention is but the latest example of joint corporate-government intervention in labor negotiations designed to #prevent-workers-from-striking.' We are in a period when the US ruling elites are willing to attack any challenge to their hegemony and power #domestically, as well as internationally. The government’s recent intervention to #deny #railroad #workers #the-right-to-strike is but the latest and most visible expression of the elites’ #class-war-policy-at-home.'

GROUND-BASED IMAGES OF #ASTEROID #STRIKE: Yesterday, NASA's DART spacecraft hit asteroid Dimorphos--an incredible, dramatic bullseye 11 million kilometers from Earth. Surprising even NASA, ground-based telescopes had no trouble seeing the impact. Astronomers with the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Hawaii recorded a bright cloud of debris:

This was the result of the 1,340-pound spacecraft plunging into Dimorphos at 14,000 mph. Most of the debris is probably asteroid dust, but some of DART may be in there, too. A similar video was recorded by the 1-meter Lesedi telescope in South Africa.

Mission scientsts say DART hit the asteroid less than 17 meters off center. Think about that: 17 meters off at a distance of 11 million kilometers. NASA still has the right stuff.

Now that the dust has cleared, astronomers are monitoring #Dimorphos's #orbit to find out whether or not it has changed in response to the strike. Even a slight shift would prove that human tech can alter an asteroid's trajectory--a possible strategy for future Planetary Defense.

Bernie backs railroad workers union

Quote below from https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/3643255-sanders-blocks-proposal-to-force-rail-unions-to-accept-labor-deal/

[Bernie] argued that railroad companies are making huge profits and should start treating their workers more fairly.

“The rail industry has seen huge profits in recent years and last year alone made a record-breaking $20 billion in profit,” Sanders said. “Last year, the CEO of CSX made over $20 million in total compensation, while the CEOs of Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern made over $14 million each in total compensation.”

By contrast, Sanders said that workers in the freight rail industry are “entitled to a grand total of zero sick days.”

Quotes below from https://www.axios.com/2022/09/13/with-rail-strike-looming-two-unions-are-holding-out

Working conditions — more than pay demands — are holding up the resolution of a years long labor dispute between the nation's largest freight rail companies and their unions.

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, and The SMART Transportation Division say in statements that they need paid sick leave and better policies around work hours, before they sign onto the deal, according to a recent statement.

There is no need for a #strike if #management agrees to reasonable #pay and #leave policies for #railroad #workers.

Shocking video shows Saudi police and plain-coat security forces attack, taser and beat young female orphans after they went on strike complaining about the inhumane condition at their orphanage.

It is an absolutely disgusting view of 4-5 men attacking and beating a young girl. This is the nation US and EU see as their strategic partner in the middle east.

Violence against women in #SaudiArabia is a horrific.. This is an attack by dozens of male security forces who used tasers and sticks and abused orphaned girls inside the orphanage just for their hunger strike to improve their poor living conditions.
