British PM wannabe Liz Truss is a disgrace!

Liz Truss has promised a further crackdown on trade unions, widening restrictions to a significant new number of industries, but her proposals were immediately criticised as the “biggest attack on civil rights” since the 19th century.

Truss said she would legislate for minimum service levels on critical national infrastructure in the first 30 days of government under her leadership. The pledge would go further than the Tories’ 2019 policy, which promised a minimum service should operate during transport strikes.

The new law proposed by Truss would potentially restrict teachers, postal workers and the energy sector. Tailored minimum thresholds, including staffing levels, would be determined with each industry.

Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT said unions would organise mass resistance if the plans went ahead, calling it “the biggest attack on trade union and civil rights since labour unions were legalised in 1871.”

“Truss is proposing to make effective trade unionism illegal in Britain and to rob working people of a key democratic right,” he said. “If these proposals become law, there will be the biggest resistance mounted by the entire trade union movement, rivalling the General Strike of 1926, the Suffragettes and Chartism.”

On 28 and 29 March 2022, dozens of trade unions and hundreds of thousands of workers in #India marched and blocked roads and train tracks in a two-day general #strike. Workers were protesting against the government’s economic policies, such as privatisation, and demanded social #security for informal sector workers.
A #generalstrike is notoriously difficult to organise, especially on such a large scale as in India. Yet, it has become almost an annual affair in India over recent years.
What makes a general strike so significant is that it is generally considered a higher form of political #protest by the working class. The capability to organise a general strike is in itself generally a reflection of the strong position of a #labour force and the act of a general strike is expected to strengthen its position further.
How have these general strikes in India been organised? To what extent does the understanding of general strikes apply to the general strikes in India? Are these general strikes able to achieve the objectives of uniting and strengthening the working-class movement and compelling #capital and state to fulfil their demands?
Most importantly, what do the general strikes tell us about the strengths and weaknesses of the labour movement in India?

Looking at the strikes of the 1940s, we can see that any combative #labor #resistance that breaks out today will likely emerge in defiance of union leadership rather than because of it. Looking at the general #strike of 2011, we can see that to succeed, combative #organizing must begin outside the workplace as well as within it, connecting the struggles of the unemployed and precarious with those of the employed. Exploring how the strategies that people experimented with in 2011 have fared in the decade since, we can draw up new proposals about what to bring to tomorrow’s uprisings.
As it has become increasingly difficult for workers to exert leverage on employers on a workplace-by-workplace basis, the general strike might represent a more ambitious way to wield power against the capitalist class as a whole.

Two years of the #COVID-19 #pandemic have transformed the landscape of labor in the United States. Out of a workforce of 153 million, well over a quarter of workers quit their jobs in 2021, and the trend continued into 2022. Propelled by rage and desperation and amplified by a notorious #Reddit page, anti-work sentiments achieved widespread exposure in late 2021, at the same time that economists were talking about a supposed “labor shortage.”
One would think that these conditions would be favorable for labor organizing. Yet despite high expectations, a real strike wave has yet to emerge. The breakthrough vote to create the first #Amazon #union inspired optimism about the prospects for a renewed #labor movement in the United States, but we are a long way from a return to the heyday of union organizing—and when labor unrest does emerge, it may take entirely different forms, as foreshadowed by “the great resignation.”
What does it mean to be “anti-work”? How should we understand today’s anti-work sentiments in their historical context? How is workplace #resistance changing alongside #work itself, and what strategies are likely to serve us in these new conditions?

Fahnenflucht!

This is not a #Maidan, although many political analysts are trying to present it this way. Where did such amazing #self-organization come from? This is the experience and tradition of the workers. Strikes have been shaking the #Mangistau region since 2008, and the strike movement began back in the 2000s. Even without any input from the #Communist Party or other leftist groups, there were constant demands to nationalize the oil companies. The workers simply saw with their own eyes what privatization and foreign capitalist takeover was leading to. In the course of these earlier demonstrations, they gained enormous experience in struggle and #solidarity. The very life in the wilderness made people stick together. It was against this background that the working class and the rest of the population came together. The protests of the workers in #Zhanoazen and #Aktau then set the tone for other regions of the country. Yurts and tents, which protesters began to put up in the main squares of the cities, were not at all taken from the “Euromaidan” experience: they stood in the Mangastau Region during the local strikes last year. The population itself brought water and food for the protesters.
In Kazakhstan today there is no legal #opposition, the entire political field has been cleared. The Communist Party of #Kazakhstan was the last to be liquidated in 2015. Only 7 pro-governmental parties remained. But there are plenty of #NGOs working in the country, which actively cooperate with the authorities in promoting a pro-Western agenda. Their favorite topics: the famine of the 1930s, the rehabilitation of participants of the Basmachi movement and collaborators of World War II, and so on. NGOs also work on the development of nationalist movement, which in Kazakhstan is completely pro-government. Nationalists hold rallies against #China and #Russia which are sanctioned by the authorities.

There is a real popular #uprising in #Kazakhstan now, and from the very beginning the protests were of a social and class nature, since the doubling of the cost of liquefied gas on the stock exchange was only the last drop in the overflowing cup of patience. After all, the performances began just the same in #Zhanaozen on the initiative of oil workers, which became a kind of political headquarters of the entire #protest movement.
And the dynamics of this movement is indicative, since it began as a social protest, then it began to expand, and labor collectives used rallies to put up their demands for a 100% increase in wages, cancellation of optimization results, improvement of working conditions and freedom of trade #union activity. As a result, on January 3, the entire Mangystau region was engulfed in a general #strike, which spread to the neighboring #Atyrau region.

Ugly truth of war - many innocents killed

Thousands of previously hidden Pentagon documents show that the US air wars in the Middle East have been marked by "deeply flawed intelligence" and have killed thousands of civilians, many of them children, according to a shocking new report in the New York Times Saturday afternoon.

The 5-year Times investigation received more than 1,300 reports examining airstrikes in Iraq and Syria from September 2014 to January 2018, more than 5,400 pages in all. None of these records show any findings of wrongdoing on the actions of the US military.

The Times reporting confirms many of the previous reports by whistleblowers Daniel Hale, Chelsea Manning and others. On July 27, 2021, whistleblower Hale was sentenced to 45 months in federal prison for exposing the true civilian toll of the US drone program. “I am here because I stole something that was never mine to take — precious human life,” Hale said at his sentencing.
