Putin used then-President Trump's animus toward Ukraine to undermine US support, NYT reports

Donald Trump asked Russian President Vladimir #Putin for advice when deciding on whether to send arms to Ukraine early during his presidency in 2017, the New York Times (NYT) reported on Oct. 5, citing undisclosed U.S. officials.

Trump allegedly asked Putin what he thought about the possibility of sending U.S. #weapons to #Ukraine, which was at the time fighting Russian and Russian proxy forces in the eastern region of #Donbas.

The #Russian president responded it would be a "mistake," forcing Trump's team to come up with ways to "change the president's mind on Ukraine" after the meeting, according to the outlet.

Don’t Underestimate the Russian Military After the Ukraine War

Russian president Vladimir Putin has consistently said that, “this conflict is not about territory…[it] is about the principles underlying the new international order.” He has repeatedly said that, although Russian troops in 2022 “approached Kiev … there was no political decision to storm the three-million city.”

Rather, he says, “it was nothing more than an operation to force the Ukrainian regime to peace. The troops were there to push the Ukrainian side to negotiations.”

This worked. Within weeks, Ukraine had agreed in Istanbul to abandon its NATO ambitions, Russia had withdrawn its troops from around Kyiv, and peace appeared possible before the West intervened and discouraged it.

... policymakers in both the #US and #Europe are undertaking increasingly brazen acts of escalation designed to bring Russia to the breaking point, all premised on the assumption that all so-called “red lines” established by #Russia regarding escalation are illusionary— Russia, they believe, is bluffing.

And if Russia is not bluffing?

Then, the western-generated scenario paints an apocalyptic picture which has a weak, defeated Russia using #nuclear #weapons against #Ukraine in a last, desperate act of vengeance.

#Israeli official to #CNN: A senior adviser to #Netanyahu has presented the #Biden administration with a new proposal for a ceasefire and the release of hostages

Palestinians release all the Israeli captives, give up their weapons, hand over all #Hamas fighters and their #weapons, in exchange, Israel will allow them to have one meal per day, live in tents where they are, have 4L of #water daily and keeps control of the #Egypt border, all #agriculture land in north, the occupation corridor they built plus the right to bomb Gaza indefinitely.

I'm sure the media will blame Hamas for not accepting this generous offer.

Arms depot in Russia's Tver Oblast built to withstand nuclear explosion heavily damaged by #UkrainianDrones

#Ukrainian #drones attacked one of the largest arsenals in Russia, causing a powerful detonation in the town of #Toropets in Russia's Tver Oblast

In 2018, the Russian Defense Ministry bragged that this facility would be prepared to withstand even a nuclear explosion. Six years later, the claim was proven to be false.

Western aid not enough to equip 'even 4 out of 14' under-armed brigades needed on the front

Ukraine hadn't received enough military aid from the foreign partners to equip "even four out of 14" Ukrainian army brigades that the country "needs to be ready," President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with CNN on Sept. 15.

Zelensky didn't specify what the 14 brigades would be used for, or where they will be dispatched.

A Debate Tip for the Candidates — There’s a Correct Answer on Weapons to Israel

The correct answer is this: The United States will abide by its own laws and policies on any weapons sent to any ally.

https://www.hrw.org/news/2024/09/10/debate-tip-candidates-theres-correct-answer-weapons-israel

Several of those laws, and the policies that derive from them, curtail American weapons going to countries that have violated or are violating the rules governing war. The federal Foreign Assistance Act prohibits security assistance to any government that restricts the delivery of U.S. humanitarian aid. The better-known Leahy laws, championed by now-retired Vermont Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy, prohibits weapons from going to military units that have committed gross violations of human rights.

"U.S. President Joe #Biden's administration is engaged in urgent discussions with Congress to allow it to use up $6 billion in military aid for Ukraine before a Sept. 30 deadline," Reuters reports, citing a number of sources familiar with the situation

"The effort comes at a high-risk moment for Ukrainian forces, who are advancing into #Russia's #Kursk region while trying to hold off Russian forces threatening the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk," the publication writes.

Most of the $7.8 billion allocated in April has not been used, and "officials scrambling to find a way to keep the remaining $6 billion from expiring as the Sept. 30 deadline - the end of the 2024 fiscal year - approaches".

Meanwhile, congressional sources told #Reuters that the flow of #weapons to #Ukraine has slowed this year.

Opinion: The Kursk incursion underlines the urgency of unrestricted support for Ukraine

Restricting Kyiv's military actions, including the #KurskIncursion, only serves to prolong the war and bolster Russia; full support for Ukraine's approach is crucial for advancing peace.

Over the past few years, Ukrainians have learned that externally-imposed restrictions, aimed at keeping the war contained within Ukraine’s borders, have only enabled Russia and, tragically, led #Ukraine into a lethal war of attrition.
