"I am pleased to announce that Maral is here. The 7 billion parameters bilingual model which can respond to Persian and English prompts, and can produce GPT-3.5 level of answers based on the dataset we fed to it!"

"I personally never thought a 7 billion parameters model can understand multiple languages this well. So I put more information on the next section of the article on why Mistral became my number one choice as the base model!"

"However, the biggest problem was still there and it was the dataset. Finding a good enough dataset is always a bottleneck. But we've been lucky enough that one of Iranian developers, has translated Alpaca Dataset to our beloved Persian language."

They trained it with two techniques, Quantized Low Rand Adoption (QLoRa) and Parameter Efficient Fine Tuning (PEFT). The blog post does not elaborate on how these techniques work.

The tokenizer is not optimized for Persian letters, so in the future they expect to be able to make a better language model for Persian.

Maral is here, 7 billion parameters bilingual model with support of Persian!

Countdown to Norooz/Nowrooz, the Persian new year and the start of spring!

Iranian mathematician, astrologist and poet, Omar #Khayyam, calculated the exact rotation of the earth around the sun in early 12rh century.

His calculations led to the creation of the Jalali calendar, name after the Jalaloddin the king of the time who was very interested in science, astronomy and poetry. His calculations found that a full year is 365.2424 days and not just 365 days as previously believed.
The calculation ledld to creation of #Persian (Jalali) calendar that consist of 6 months of 31 days, followed by 5 months of 30 days and the last month can be 29 or 30 days depending on the moment of sal-tahvil being on the morning or afternoon (most people use the #Jalali #calendar without knowing it when they read their #horoscopes every day).

His work fixed the almost 4000 year old solar calendar who lacked leap years and was causing problem for those following it (the parsi community in India still using the old calendar and celebrate #Norooz a day wrong every year leading to their Norooz celebration being held in summer of fall as years go by).

Khayyam's calculation was about 4 seconds off that was later corrected in 16th century to adjust the sal-tahvil or the break of the new year that is based on the exact time of city of Shiraz rotating an exact year around the sun.

As a tradition, Iranians all over the world, as well as Afghans, Turkmenistan, tajiks, Kurds and others who celebrate Norooz follow the same exact date and time no matter where in the world they love.
Here is the countdown to the Norooz of 2023

PS. There are many who doubt that Khayyam was the source of the calculation of Jalali calendar and there has been many heated debates about the subject.

Every year, on December 21st, Iranians around the world gather together to celebrate one of the traditions of their forefathers: #Yalda Night festival in #Iran.

Since ancient times, they have passed the longest and darkest night of the year, the last night of fall, the winter solstice, in the warm company of friends and family.

The night is filled with laughter, chatter, color, poetry, story-telling, and food.

This warm welcome to winter is also celebrated in the many countries in the region such as Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

This is the night when Iranians used to share the last remaining fruit from summer. And this is the night now Iranians let go and stuff themselves to their heart’s content!

One of the essential items of Yalda table is watermelon. The reason is that, from the good old days, Iranians believed that beginning winter by eating summer fruits will save one from falling ill during the cold season.

Also, pomegranates, which symbolize fertility, rebirth, and the cycle of life in Persian culture, also bless Yalda table with their red color.

Iranians serve them with dried mint and salt, or use them in cakes, desserts, and special Yalda dishes.

Nuts and dried fruit also add color and taste to Chelleh night table.

A nice dinner that traditionally includes pomegranates and walnuts is also a part of Yalda gatherings. So, mostly served at this night are Aush-e Anar(pomegranates soup), Fesenjoon, Anar polo(pomegranates rice), or Nardoon.

Today, a Yalda gathering is not complete to a modern Persian family without all the colorful food on the Yalda table (or Korsi).

Korsi, is a short table, with char coil heat put under it and covered with heavy cover, or rug, where family members sit on the floor, with their feet and part of their bodies under the warm Korsi, while munching on roasted nuts, water melon, dried fruits, pomegranates and finally some delicious food, mainly Fesenjun (thick pomegranates and walnut stew with duck or chicken) and plenty of rice.

Amazing music : Khosha Howraman by Kamkars خوشه هورامان کامکارها

The Ksamkars family from the #Kurdistan region of Iran is one of the most versatile and amazing music groups in Iran.

The ensemble consist of the family members and they play different instrument and sing in many different languages.

This song is one of my favorite. Never forget the night in Stockholm where I vent visiting my brother who was their organizer of their European tour, where they started playing this sing and listening to them play Daff (the drum) in a small room of my friend's apartment was an unbelievable experience. Daff has a very strong base sound that you feel it in your stomach when 3-4 people play it at the same time. That and the whole family singing the song (unlike the case on the video) was an unbelievable experience.

We had a great time with them when they visited NYC while I was there and spent a couple of days being their tourist guide taking them to my favorite hidden treasures of NY China town, Harlem and Spanish Harlem having what on of them said was their best world food tour in 2 days!

Ardalan, the guy playing Santur, at the right side of the ensemble is a music prodigy who plays many instrument at professional level, something that takes decades to master, he does it in months or even weeks. He has written many amazing Kurdish, Persian and western classic music and played in almost every country in Europe, US and Asia.

Aristocratic Iranian woman with her #slave in #Kermanshah during #Qajar dynasty

The image has upset many delusional Iranians who believe #slavery was abolished in #Iran by #Cyrus the creator of #Persian empire 2500 years ago, but ignore the dark history of modern Iran specially post 17th century where #African slave, mostly under aged were used by the royal families and wealthy feudal lords. Many of the male slaves were either sold to #Arab and #Turkish slave traders when they reached puberty, or were castrated and used as "Khaje" (Persian name for castrated servants) of the #Harems of kings, princes and other wealthy Iranians.

It is really upsetting that ignorant fools with no knowledge of Iran history, blindly deny the authenticity of the picture or the fact that the child in the image is actually a slave. Some actually refer to them as servants. receiving payment, which actually was a way for slave owners to "rent" their slaves to royal members for a monthly/one-time fee until the child was to be replaced.

Loosing myself in 700 years old poetry book!

One of the things I love about #Farsi language is that I can read text, books and #poems from a 1000 year old #poets and #writers and except a few words that has changed or some #Arabic words they used to used back then, but it has been replaced with some modern #Persian words after the works of scholars in late 19th century.

It was a long time ago I read #Rumi, #Hafez, #Saadi or #Obeid since I gave almost all my books including the 7 volume special edition of #Soviet published #Shahname, the oldest preserved book in modern post #Arab invasion Persian book that was written to preserve the Farsi #language and one of the main reasons that Iran is the only #muslim country that was ruled by Arabs for centuries, but never adapted the Arabic language, like almost all other Muslim countries invaded by Arabs between 7th and 9th century.

Having found an unbelievable digital archive of all the Persian books ever published, I am spending an hour or 2 a day reading the poems, partially to reset my mind that has been affected by too much distraction by social media, and partially to refresh my Farsi that I feel I am losing after some 20 years of not reading any books in Farsi.

For now, it is the 3ed edition of Obeid Zakani, based on the oldest original copy published first in 1352 a.c.
