#solarpunk

anubis2814@friendica.myportal.social

I'm a little concerned about how my #solarpunk channel is going and if I'm going about it the right way. The point of it is to start a movement where people create sustainable communities in their area to focus on their own distinct parts of solarpunk. The reason for this channel to begin with has to do with my community building toolbox I'm trying to build on top of Friendica. I'm self taught so I'm running into a real wall when it comes to altering data bases with PHP as there are at least 3 layers of code here, one the main code, the second more complex code created for security reasons and lastly 3rd party clients that make the job much easier if your bread and butter is coding but just add levels of confusion if you are a noob.
Solarpunk Philly was always going to be my first community to start with. I realized I couldn't explain the rule structure needed to the average coder if they decided to try and help so I realized that I needed to use Solarpunk as the vehicle to explain the toolkit. Meaning if I wanted to move forward and get any outside interest, I had make this channel to explain things so they knew exactly what I wanted.
The upcoming sustainable community section is 6 episodes long with the last describing the platform I've been working on. I got a ton of positive feedback what I said I was thinking about making a solarpunk channel. My first video has around 150 views which is pretty good, my second video has less than a 3rd of that.
There are 3 reasons why I can think of the drop off after the interest. a) people think solarpunk and only think of the literary and artistic works of a post transition world and not something they can live now. When it became clear it was an activism channel isn't of an artistic channel some were turned off. B) People telling me to just make it and not overthink it. Since I was basing this off the Solarpunk Philly group I had planned to start, I could have gone with solarpunk planet, solarpunk world, or solarpunk nation but all sounded more like corporate naming convention. Solarpunk USA was just an expansion of Solarpunk Philly, and the USA has specific needs to learn that other nations don't and are in a unique position with too much materialism and waste as opposed to scarcity in many other nations. However the naming convention Solarpunk Philly could easily be projected to Soarpunk Barcelona or Solarpunk Nairobi. Perhaps since it appears too US centric, turning people form other nations off. Perhaps a way to fix this will be to change the name to something different such as Solarpunk NOW. This implies that the unlike most of the genre where transition has happened we can have it now if we put in the effort. There could also be a more inclusive name I can go with. I still have the ability to change the name at this point.

I'm using Friendica, hence the wall of text, so I don't have the option to give polls (hopefully a feature out next year). Please put you answers in the comments

Were you hoping for a channel more on art and less activism? Are you turned off by the name if you are now from the US? Is solarpunk NOW a better name or do you have an even better name than Solarpunk USA? Am I just overthinking all of this? (the answer is yes but marketing involves overthinking things and I don't have marketing money cause this is all free)

Unlike #cyberpunk which relies on future tech, and #steampunk which is stories centered around tech we used to think might work, #solarpunk is based mostly on tech we have right now, that those in power refuse to quickly implement as they are beholden to those who wish to make the world a cyberpunk hellscape.
Because of this, solarpunk as an artistic genre is only a tiny part of what it means to be solarpunk as we can if we put the effort in actually LIVE solarpunk.
Living solarpunk involves us to do the following:
1. Build and learn how to maintain a sustainable community
2. #Urbanism through political advocacy and increasing our own use of #publictransit and #micro-mobility devices.
3. Waste/energy/ #consumption reduction( #degrowth )
4. #DIY / #upcycling
5. Urban #gardening and #food forestry
6. #Righttorepair
7. Community cooking/sharing/bulk investment
8. Community #freecycling
9. Digital freedom. Using #FOSS based server social media, clouds storage and software to reduce costs and advertising
10. Create Solarpunk art and telling the story of a future that could be as opposed to the #doomer mindset that causes us stress

This is what my new youtube/peertube channel will be about and I have around 8 scripts written up already, but I have to make sure I'm not forgetting anything, not forgetting explanations and reasons for things and make sure I'm making them as simple as easy to understand.

Once I complete explaining point number one, this will become a collaborative channel, with many people involved just like how solarpunk has to be. We can't do all of these things on our own, the only way to make this work is if we are all involved and connected to ensure no one slips through the cracks.

I'm a character artist, spent a lot of time drawing OCs but also made some Solarpunk stuff, including that one "we would call it Solarpunk" post.

Here's some illustrations I did for the Solarpunk Prompts podcast, with more to come

Solar, Hope, Cosy, and Functional

I am excited about how many people have embraced solarpunk! I feel great that people are imagining the means to a better future! I am equally excited by the growth of hopepunk. We need to stay strong in our visions of a bright future.

I am bringing “cosy” and “functional” into my work, because it is easy to think stories must have grand spectacles and nearly insurmountable conflict to be interesting. Many movements for change may have had notable moments, but most of the heavy work was done on a persistent everyday manner.

Rosa Parks deliberately sat in a seat reserved for white people on a bus. She did not come riding a horse up to the steps of Congress, swinging a magic sword over her head. She was not a “chosen one”. She did not carry laser pistols. And yet that moment captured people’s imaginations. Suddenly, we all understand that we can have a part in creating change.

Portraying genuinely good friendships that help sustain us while we do the work for change is not only cosy and functional, but can prove pivotal in making our world one of kindness, security, and a healthy environment. So many new and important things can be said through the arts. They need to come from our experience of what is good, and true, and compassionate.

Keep up your awesome efforts!

Review:

Mindtouch (The Dreamhealers 1) MCA Hogarth

I am a great fan of storytelling that inspires us to create a healthy and humane future. These sorts of stories can come from many different genres. Right now I am focussing on #solarpunk, #hopepunk, and #cosycore. Also, I am adding my own literary genre #funkyfi. This is fiction to do with functional behaviour in basically functional worlds. Utopia can set unrealistic expectations. Good things and bad things will continue to happen for as long as we exist, but if we all learn how to behave in a functional manner, we are more likely to sort things out.

Mindtouch is about a future where animals and even some humans are the result of genetic engineering. The sapient animals were created to perform dangerous tasks for humans, and at some point in the past left Earth in order to find freedom. As such they chose to colonise distant solar systems. One set of humans, the Eldritch, were developed to live long lives. Despite the long lives, they are not reproducing sufficiently to preserve their species.

The story itself is about the friendship that develops between a “Pelted” person and an Eldritch person when they become roommates at a medical university. Part of this relationship is also shared with a group of child patients who are terminally ill.

We do get a certain amount of futuristic technology, but it’s not clear if this is particularly appropriate technology, ie solar-powered. However, we do have alien peoples who have learned from human mistakes. We also discover the wisdoms of their various cultures, as well as some of their weaknesses. Ultimately, this story is about how these peoples uniquely and well sort out their various emotional challenges through introspection, friendship, and kindness.

Hogarth writes in an intelligent manner with enough twists and turns in the plot to keep things interesting. Mindtouch is not high literature, but it is exceptionally competant, and quite an achievement for someone without the help of a professional editor. We can all use professional editors for long projects like this! I felt uplifted by it, and have ordered the second book in the duology in order to find out what happens to the characters. This has all the charm of a Becky Chambers book. I can recommend it!

Peace and kindness,

Katherine

Muh..

Mkay .. the decision is made..

I will put myself some bit into #freakin #SolarPunk

Over many years, i only dreamt of being able to harness my very own electric energy .. and maybe give some good old #unix #iron his well earned grace electricity...... I never had the room to be able to do that sadly.

now i have the 'real estate' to place PV panels in a at least basically meaningful way....

Mkay well ... it's probably a _very_ long way over there..

But anyway .... now i'm at least eyeing some 50 or 100w panels, one or two.. Just to get my feet wet and actually have a way to charge some possibly upcoming battery storage w/o needing grid energy......

So it begins ...... i'm curious where it ends.

Time to start (and learn) something new maybe? ;)

And yea, sorry but even not really sorry. It _may_ happen that i put some solar energy i can't actually use or store otherwise at least temporay into some older bitcoin mining asics... Just for the kicks, the tech .... and maybe to help finance the batteries and inverters to kick off the miners and drive my workstation instead.....

Ah #dreams ... #solar #dreams.... ;)

Hey everyone! I’m #newhere. Excited to leave behind traditional media giants for the fediverse. I’m interested in #anarchism, the #gay-agenda, anything #lgbt, #mentalhealth, #popculture, and #solarpunk, among other things. I wish I spent more of my time outside, and I love #hiking in the mountains.

Hopefully in the near future we'll see some major chances in our social landscape that will allow us to feel less isolated and alone. A decentralized, federated network of peer-to-peer communication seems a wonderful step in that direction!
