Roald Dahl gecensureerd? Het lijkt er eerder op dat hij postuum gecastreerd is – door zijn Britse uitgever Puffin en zijn erfgenamen. Er zijn om commerciële redenen honderden passages uit zijn kinderboeken aangepast of geschrapt door een team van sensitivity readers van de Britse organisatie Inclusive Minds. (...)
Als we deze trend in Nederland volgen, staat ook tegendraadse Annie M.G. Schmidt nog het een en ander te wachten. Zij dichtte in ‘Leeszaal’: ‘Ik lever geestrijk voedsel aan mevrouwen/ die binnenkomen en alleen maar van/ de allernieuwste liefdesboeken houen.’ Mag je nog wel zo schamper over vrouwen schrijven, of zullen we maar ‘mensen’ van die vele ‘mevrouwen’ bij Schmidt maken? – dan zijn we van alle problemen af.

En wat te denken van E. du Perron die in Het land van herkomst schreef: „Een inlandse vrouw kan afstotend zijn om twee redenen: haar sirihmond en de klapperolie in haar haar; het eerste viel te verbieden of te vermijden, maar het tweede scheen onontbeerlijk en het terugvinden van die lucht op een hoofdkussen kon een Europeaan doen beseffen hoe diep hij was gezonken.”
Een kwalijke passage, jawel, maar er zijn wel meer meesterwerken met kwalijke passages. Toch maar verbieden omdat er genoeg meesterwerken zijn zonder kwalijke passages?
Zo komen we vanzelf bij Gerard Reve terecht en het beruchte citaat uit een brief aan Simon Carmiggelt: „Ik ben er erg voor, dat die prachtvolken zo gauw mogelijk geheel onafhankelijk worden, en ons niks meer kosten, zodat we ze allemaal met een zak vol spiegeltjes en kralen op de tjoekie tjoekie stoomboot kunnen zetten, enkele reis Takki Takki Oerwoud, mijnheer!” (...)
Wat al die ingrepen, zoals bij Dahl, gemeen hebben, is een volstrekt gebrek aan respect voor het werk van de schrijver. Die mag alleen maar kreukvrije, risicoloze teksten schrijven. (...)
