A quotation by Schopenhauer, Arthur

Experience of the world may be looked upon as a kind of text, to which reflection and knowledge form the commentary. Where there is great deal of reflection and intellectual knowledge, and very little experience, the result is like those books which have on each page two lines of text to forty lines of commentary. A great deal of experience with little reflection and scant knowledge, gives us books like those of the editio Bipontina where there are no notes and much that is unintelligible.

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) German philosopher

Parerga and Paralipomena, Vol. 1, “Aphorisms on the Wisdom of Life [Aphorismen zur Lebensweisheit],” “Counsels and Maxims [Paränesen und Maximen],” ch. B, § 8 (1851) [tr. Saunders (1890), 2.8]

The #advertising #propaganda in #Russia is the same as here: you hire a few #models and make them pretend to eat #FastFood and still have a slim #body.

Unfortunately, I have to admit to myself that Mc Donalds is something like #international #understanding. All over the #world they eat fast #food although they should know better. While I was in China, I actually went to #McDonalds because I knew what I was getting and didn't accidentally order some jelly. Let them all be full, #fat and happy rather than at #war with each other.

Quote Investigator: Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

Probably from Reverand John Whatson, pseudonym Ian MacLaren, in 1897.

The original form substitutes "pitiful" for "kind":

Be pitiful, for every man is fighting a hard battle

The archaic meaning being:

pitiful, A. adj. 1. Full of or characterized by pity; compassionate, merciful, tender. Now rare.

Modern terms might be charitable, empathetic, or understanding. I'll note that there are times when outright kindness is somewhat dampened by the fact that the other's battle seems to be pitched in whole or part against me.

A relatively modern (1965, Chicago Tribune) explanation expands the concept:

Most of us are acutely aware of our own struggles and we are preoccupied with our own problems. We sympathize with ourselves because we see our own difficulties so clearly. But Ian MacLaren noted wisely, “Let us be kind to one another, for most of us are fighting a hard battle.”

MacClaren's own original explanation:

This man beside us also has a hard fight with an unfavouring world, with strong temptations, with doubts and fears, with wounds of the past which have skinned over, but which smart when they are touched. It is a fact, however surprising. And when this occurs to us we are moved to deal kindly with him, to bid him be of good cheer, to let him understand that we are also fighting a battle; we are bound not to irritate him, nor press hardly upon him nor help his lower self.

One element of the concept I refer to as #manifestation addresses this, in that personal lived experience and history are extraordinarily difficult to express or perceive, and that much behaviour which seems hostile or irrational may well have some validity in personal history.

Victoria's Anti-vilification laws and the difference between the two symbols (which is pretty apparent when one has a look)

Lysander Spooner ~ There is No Law Above Natural Law

https://usa.anarchistlibraries.net/library/lysander-spooner-natural-law-or-the-science-of-justice.html

'In #1882, Lysander Spooner wrote #NaturalLaw; or The #Science of Natural #Justice. In it he explained why there is only one #UniversalLaw that governs our #relationships. Natural Law stands above all others.

Natural Law was not created by men and women and it cannot be altered, denied or evaded by any human being, claimed authority or State. It defines the nature of our interactions and even how we judge our own character.

As Natural Law is a phenomena that exists in nature it can be studied like any other. Understanding Natural Law is, as Spooner wrote, the science of natural justice.

How do we live in peace? What rules determine how we maintain peace between each other? It is “self evident” that we can and do live peacefully but do we only do so because some higher “authority” will punish us if we don’t. Or do we all innately understand the unwritten Law that binds us within our corner of #society?

Is there a #common set of #principles which we all understand, regardless of the jurisdiction we live in? Is there a Universal Law which establishes the #boundaries of our #behaviour, enabling us to live in #peace and #harmony?

Of course there is, if there were not #humanity would not have #survived. This is Natural Law and Spooner described it.'

Talking #climate with those holding different worldviews

source: https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2021/06/talking-climate-with-those-holding-different-worldviews/

She teamed up with psychologist Terri O’Fallon, who developed STAGES based on earlier cognitive development models. O’Fallon’s work defines 12 stages across three tiers – called concrete, subtle, and metaware, each consisting of several stages. People at earlier stages think in concrete terms. At the subtle stages they add abstract thinking, and at the later stages people can think about awareness itself. O’Fallon is one of numerous researchers who have studied this developmental unfolding of worldviews, and her stages map accordingly onto worldviews more commonly called traditional, modern, postmodern, and integral (see table).
