The Green New Deal Is the Opiate of the Masses

Source: https://www.thenation.com/article/economy/degrowth-communism-green-new-deal/

#Capitalism is always trying to raise workforce #productivity in order to cut costs. Rises in workforce productivity allow the same amount of #production to occur with fewer workers. When this happens, the economy’s size remains constant while unemployment rates rise. But capitalism also makes it impossible for the unemployed to live, and politicians hate high unemployment rates. For this reason, there’s a huge amount of pressure for the economy to keep expanding indefinitely so as to maintain the rate of employment. This is why a rise in productivity results in the expansion of the #economy. This is the Productivity Trap.

A Gen Xer who secretly works 3 full-time remote jobs and makes $344,000 paid off his mortgage and is saving to send his kids to college debt-free

"Job two got so easy and was still 100% remote, so I kept it while I got job three," he said, adding: "I hung in there because the pay was good and I wasn't really doing anything."

An agency created an #AI #model who earns up to $11,000 a month because it was tired of #influencers 'who have egos'

Source: https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-influencer-aitana-clueless-agency-tech-spain-2023-11

Cruz told Euronews he decided to design López after having trouble working with real models and influencers. "We started analyzing how we were working and realized that many projects were being put on hold or canceled due to problems beyond our control. Often it was the fault of the influencer or model and not due to design issues," he said.

So real influencers are the first jobs killed by AI.

On the one hand, I think it's a shame that the uncritical target group doesn't care whether the person is real. On the other hand, real models are also almost indistinguishable from AI-generated images due to the beauty filters.

College or Trade School?

I have three and a half years to decide, so no hurry, but just looking around at opportunities that #high-school graduates are taking here in the US, It sure doesn't look as if #college is worth all the money and time, unless you just want to be a "professional student" and take multiple degrees and never actually #work at all. And it costs a bazillion dollars a year, all in loans, so when you graduate you're trapped in debt. Maybe the only #jobs you need college for don't pay very well anyway, except doctors and lawyers I guess. Or politicians, who somehow make millions even though their salaries aren't enough to do that.

I'm inclined to go to #trade-school and just go to work without all that debt, with a skill that people need and will pay for, like computer stuff or someone to fix their flying car (we were supposed to have those by the year 2020, right?). Plumbers, electricians, technicians, X-ray techs and dental hygienists will always be needed. Barbers, train engineers, pilots, nurses, plant operators, all kinds of high-paying skilled jobs that don't require a bazillion dollars to learn and don't leave you steeped in debt sure sounds more appealing, even though college sounds like it could be fun. Who is to say I couldn't go to college part-time after working in a trade during the day? But paying my own way, like my parents did.

How do I decide?

I mean besides the "follow your passions" advice that everyone offers like a standard response to a greeting. I have passions about lots of things I guess, and some things I do for fun could also become my line of work! So I totally get the "follow your passion" advice, I just don't know how to choose. So I'll ask this question of my new #adult friends in the Fediverse:

Did it work for you? Are your dreams coming true for career and life?

Thanks for hopefully a lot of answers,

A 20-year-old #Amazon employee #died at #work. #Indiana issued a $7,000 #fine.

Source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/11/26/amazon-warehouse-death-7000-fine/

After an 11-week investigation, Indiana #safety officials found that Amazon failed to ensure a #workplace “free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause #death” and issued a serious safety citation.

The #penalty? A $7,000 fine, the maximum in Indiana.

This is what happens when you deregulate everything and rely on the self-regulation of the market.

The dark sides of our #civilization

A lion lay sated on the savannah watching the sun set. An economist came by and asked the lion why he wasn't working. The lion replied that he would normally eat economists for dessert, but at the moment he was full. This would also be the reason why he rests here, because there would be nothing more to do than to enjoy life with a full stomach.

The economist explained that there are 3 hours left until sunset. If the lion would hold on, he could still hunt 3 to 4 antelopes. After that he would have a food supply and could rest much longer and enjoy life.

The lion thought to himself, I can try that. After he had even killed 5 antelopes in the end, the economist sold him a freezer to store the antelopes. After that, of course, he still needed an electricity contract and a house to put the freezer in. Before the lion knew it, he was working from 8 in the morning until late in the evening to hunt antelope, because now he had to pay off the loan for the house and the electricity for the freezer. He could rest only for a short time on weekends.

My thoughts on framework after daily driving it for 2 years

Louis Rossmann talks a bit about daily driving his FrameWork laptop since 2 years.

He has some more or less valid nitpicks here and there, some which might actually be fixed in newer mainboard versions or maybe not. ;)

But overall .... he likes it ... and for very good reasons still..

(Nonetheless, i hoped for the bigger 16" version which is available soon. ;))
