Why a Chest Strap Is the Best Way to Track Your Heart Rate During Exercise

The image shows a close-up view of a woman fastening a heart rate monitor onto her chest, in what seems to be a fitness center. The foreground is dominated by the woman's hands and torso, with the black sports bra and heart rate monitor being the central focus. The background is blurred but shows the typical setting of a gym with various workout equipment visible, suggesting a place for physical activity and fitness training.
I knew that a chest strap was going to be more accurate than any watch based tracker, but I was not aware that a Coospo H808S chest strap heart rate monitor (quite a bit cheaper than the Polar H10 chest strap I’m using) can also connect to various third-party fitness apps like Polar, Wahoo, Endomondo, UA Run, Garmin, Peloton and more (seemingly via its own CoospoRide app).

This chest strap does basically what the H10 does, and is also waterproof, and has Wireless HRM Dual Mode Connection like the H10.

I’m very happy with the Polar H10, but I’m due to replace the strap soon, and they are not exactly cheap (in South Africa anyway). For me, it looks the Polar strap will need replacing every 14 or 15 months.

Your ‘Max Heart Rate’ Is Probably Wrong

An Apple Watch showing the heart rate of 108 BPM and 85 BPM 9m agao. It also shows a scatter graph with a few dots in a colum.
If you’ve ever worried about your heart rate during exercise being too high or too low, you’ll want to read this. Your “heart rate zones” might be completely wrong. Not only are zones defined differently in different apps, they are also usually calculated based on your maximum heart rate. And that maximum heart rate calculation? It’s incorrect for huge swaths of the population.

Your maximum heart rate is, by definition, the fastest your heart can possibly beat. If a watch tells you that your max is 180 beats per minute, and then you go for a run and your heart is beating at 190 beats per minute, you haven’t gone “over” your max. You have simply found out that 180 isn’t your max at all. Your actual max must be at least 190.

The only way to truly know your max heart rate is to test it with intense exercise. I’ll give you some ways to do that below. Fitness gadgets and apps (and, in the olden days, books and other sources of fitness advice), meanwhile, try to skip that step by using a formula that estimates your maximum heart rate based on your age. The most popular formula simply subtracts your age from 220.

But there are problems with that formula, and even with the alternative equations that have been proposed to replace it. There is no formula that can tell you what your own personal max heart rate actually is.

Quite interesting, as I always went with that 220-age formula (I suppose it is a good rule of thumb), but it is true that I don’t shop for shoes base don my body height either. I had always wondering too why I could easily exceed my “max heart rate” by quite a bit for exercises. But in the end I also decided I did not want to be exercising at such a high rate as it is probably better to pace myself rather at 80% to 90% anyway.

I had an episode this afternoon where for roughly an hour, my #HeartRate dropped to 30bpm. This is according to my smartwatch readout. You may remember that I have experienced some #bradycardia in the past year, and it's part of why I had a loop recorder implanted in my chest recently. Never before has such an episode lasted this long though.

I transmitted the readings from the recorder to the cardiac doctor's office. I also messaged the doctor via the portal to let them know I had sent that transmission.

It started with what I thought was me falling asleep at my WFH desk. I startled "awake", realized I was feeling exhausted, and went to lie down in my bed. I had limited awareness of what was going on until I started to come out of it at about 1:45pm.

I checked the health app (Samsung) curious as to how long I had slept in that "nap". That's when I noticed the heart rate recording showed that 30 bpm reading over a two hour window. Dug in a little deeper and discovered it was from about 12:27pm until 1:25pm. That's roughly when I started to regain awareness of my surroundings.

Fun times, eh?

Google can turn ANC earbuds into a heart rate monitor with no extra hardware – with interesting upsides

Side-view illustration of the ear and the ear canal, with an earbud plugged in, showing soundwaves travelling in the canal, and indicating deformation taking place due to heart beats.
Google performed two sets of studies with 153 people that found APG “achieves consistently accurate heart rate (3.21% median error across participants in all activity scenarios) and heart rate variability (2.70% median error in inter-beat interval) measurements.”

Compared to existing HR sensors, it’s not impacted by skin tones. Ear canal size and “sub-optimal seal conditions” also do not impact accuracy.

So apart from the skin pigmentation advantage, there is also no extra device or hardware required, and wearing ear buds during exercise is a pretty common behaviour. The downside is that no-one really wears earbuds 24/7.

ther's far more in there than just that. well worth a watch. well worth paying attention to.

e.g.:

20,000,000 information bits in the subconscious, 40 information bits in the conscious.

:O why "mind over matter" and "willpower" struggles.

ps, [i add] the wim hof method, and cannabinoids, and natural sourced vitamins, and joyous laughter and relaxation, seem wise to deploy every day. :)

pps, that was also kinda astonishing (but should be already fully known and aknowledged), how, physicians/doctors/surgeons/etc dont get educated about diet in medical school.
... and we've been flipping out that they dont get educated about the endo-cannabinoid system (the main regulatory system of all the body's regulatory systems, with more receptors than any other system)!? they've far deeper problems yet. corporate capture, inducting "profitable" lies and lies of ommission.
