Food giants are strangling Britain’s farmers and consumers. What’s the solution? Break them up

When #British farmers protested outside the Houses of Parliament earlier this year, they sent 49 scarecrows, after a survey had found that 49% of UK fruit and vegetable farmers said they expected to go bust within a year. The scarecrows stood in for real farmers, who are mostly too afraid to speak out.

One farmer told campaigners they had grown 60 tonnes of salad potatoes for a large UK supermarket, only for the supermarket to suddenly cancel the order, leaving the farmer “financially screwed”. The arbitrary power that supermarkets wield instils fear, which the supermarkets leverage to impose take-it-or-leave-it fees and other unfair conditions on farmers.

The problem is our monopolised food system.

Think of it as a vast profit machine shaped like an hourglass, with many food producers at the top, millions of consumers at the bottom, and a few dominant firms – such as giant supermarkets or global food traders – clustered at its narrowing neck, siphoning a cut from the passing traffic. This power ripples through global supply chains.

Ukraine sends #Palestine 1,000 tons of flour in first tranche of food aid

The delivery was the first tranche of three food aid packages to be sent under a humanitarian program entitled "Grain from #Ukraine."

The first package will be enough to feed more than 100,000 Palestinian families for a month, the foreign ministry said.

#Hunger has become a persistent problem in #Gaza against the backdrop of the ongoing incursion by the #Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

"The latest 'Special Snapshot' of Gaza from the #UN’s #hunger monitoring system, the Integrated #Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), that will be published on Tuesday also says that one in five of the population – more than 495,000 people – are now 'facing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity' involving 'an extreme lack of food, #starvation, and #exhaustion'.

“'More than half [of households] also reported that, often, they do not have any food to eat in the house, and over 20% go entire days and nights without eating.'"

Britain seems stuck in a doom loop of poverty. I have a plan to raise billions to address that

But how to fix it? Three seismic shifts have unfolded over the last decade.

First, the welfare safety net has been systematically shredded, with the government abandoning responsibilities taken for granted since 1945.

Second, charities and food banks, which have taken over from universal credit as the last line of defence, are exhausted and justifiably angry about having to pick up the pieces with insufficient resources. They even fear their desperate relief efforts could provide cover for the government walking further away.

Third, unsure how they fit into a poverty-free, pollution-free future, the corporate sector has in the last decade donated less, not more.

Yet the many business leaders who are now championing a greater sense of environmental and social responsibility know they can, and should, play a bigger role.
