Prior to Friday’s announcement, Brussels had already barred several Russia-associated media from engaging with audiences in member states since the Ukraine conflict escalated into open hostilities in February 2022. Even platforming content from the targeted organizations is illegal in the bloc. The new additions to the blacklist announced on Friday include the relatively small Czech-based portal Voice of Europe, RIA Novosti, a leading Russian news agency, and the veteran newspapers Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

The latter is the official paper of the Russian government, which prints new laws, presidential decrees, and other executive documents to formally announce them to the general public, before they can enter force.

In our open free democracy we cannot tolerate opposing media outlets, censorship is our tool of choice. Censorship ensure the chosen political narrative to go unchallenged.

When opposing view points and information is considered/labeled propaganda you know the promoted narrative is fragile. Learning what the ‘other side’ think and how they view things is a huge no-no. Facts has only one author (ours – decided by us) and anyone reporting something else is basically doing information manipulation, interference or something we don’t like.

I was just in a meeting with NoQ, a Swedish organization that aims to help #homeless people find shelter for the night. The sad truth about #Sweden is that #neoliberalism has destroyed (and is destroying) parts of our social services and care for each other, and is creating a #caste system. But people aren't talking about it because the #narratives is to a large extent controlled by the mainstream/corporate #media

Chris Hedges has been cancelled by The Real News Network

The veteran writer Chris Hedges took to social media to announce, "I was just informed by Max Alvarez, the Editor-in-Chief at The Real News, that they will no longer run my show. The reason for the cancellation, he said, is that my critiques of Biden, especially for the genocide in Gaza, jeopardise his nonprofit status."

So much for independent media. The global reach of Israeli octopus is truly shocking.

In the extensive #BBC coverage of local #elections in the #UK, I’ve seen and heard not a single reference to local issues or how local councils performed. It is all interpreted only as an indication of popularity of national politics.

I understand the connection to national politics, and I’m not asking this to be denied. However, this is both bad journalism and biased coverage. It’s bad journalism as it ignores a large part of what local elections are about, and fails to hold local government to account on anything they do.

It’s biased as it projects national issues on local elections, and supports the main national parties, with no value given to smaller parties, local parties and independent candidates, who might pay an important role locally. In effect, the BBC is encouraging people to vote according to national issues, not local.

Going through my social media, it seems like Gaza doesn't even exist.

It's all about student protests and police brutality in US.

In the mean time, the stories of Maas Graves, mass execution of healthcare staff and mutilated bodies of palestinians in Khan Yunis have all but disappeared from the news.

No news about starvation.
No news about murder of aid workers by IDF.
No news of bombing tent cities with fire bombs.
No news of Netanyahu ignoring the peace proposal.
No news that Biden keep sending weapons and money to Netanyahu.

I guess it's good that we see the student protests are spreading, but it should not be forgetting WHY they are protesting and what over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza are forced to live every day.

Democracy Dies Behind Paywalls

The case for making journalism free—at least during the 2024 election

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2024/04/paywall-problems-media-trust-democracy/678032/

I learned of this article on Techdirt. I keep JavaScript off by default, so I have no trouble reading this. See if you do.

It almost feels like a publicity stunt. They put an article called "Democracy Dies Behind Paywalls" behind a paywall. It's like performance art. I think it's very funny.

Here's a bit of the Atlantic article.

Paywalls create a two-tiered system: credible, fact-based information for people who are willing to pay for it, and murkier, less-reliable information for everyone else. Simply put, paywalls get in the way of informing the public, which is the mission of journalism. And they get in the way of the public being informed, which is the foundation of democracy. It is a terrible time for the press to be failing at reaching people, during an election in which democracy is on the line. There’s a simple, temporary solution: Publications should suspend their paywalls for all 2024 election coverage and all information that is beneficial to voters. Democracy does not die in darkness—it dies behind paywalls.

Michael Parenti on the ruling class' concern with our thinking/perceptions

"But they don’t care about what we think. They turn a deaf ear to us," some people complain. That is not true. They care very much about what you think. In fact, that is the only thing about you that holds their attention and concern. They don’t care if you go hungry, unemployed, sick, or homeless. But they do care when you are beginning to entertain resistant democratic #thoughts. They get nervous when you discard your #liberal complaints and adopt a #radical analysis. They do care that you are catching on as to what the motives and functions of the national security state and the US global empire are all about at home and in so many corners of the world. They get furiously concerned when you and millions like you are rejecting the pap that is served up by corporate #media and establishment leaders.

By controlling our #perceptions, they control our society; they control public #opinion and public #discourse. And they limit the range and impact of our political #consciousness. The plutocrats know that their power comes from their ability to control our empowering responses. They know they can live at the apex of the social pyramid only as long as they can keep us in line at the pyramid’s base. Who pays for all their wars? We do. Who fights these #wars? We do or our low-income loved ones do. If we refuse to be led around on a super-patriotic, fear-ridden leash and if we come to our own decisions and act upon them more and more as our ranks grow, then the ruling profiteers’ power shrinks and can even unwind and crash—as has happened with dynasties and monarchies of previous #epochs.

We need to strive in every way possible for the revolutionary unraveling, a #revolution of organized #consciousness striking at the #empire’s heart with full force when #democracy is in the streets and mobilized for the kind of irresistible upsurge that seems to come from nowhere yet is sometimes able to carry everything before it.

There is nothing sacred about the existing system. All economic and political #institutions are contrivances that should serve the interests of the #people. When they fail to do so, they should be replaced by something more responsive, more just, and more democratic.
