So we had a #typhoon on Thursday and it achieved something no other managed to do:
enter image description here
It knocked out the power supply to a number of street lights. This is extraordinary for two reasons: 1) I've never really seen those lights dark. 2) Taipower usually fixes such problems within two hours, even during a typhoon.
enter image description here
The reason for this not having been fixed yet may however have a very simple reason: There is a certain probability that nobody has complained about it.
enter image description here
It's actually a little romantic, you can see the stars better. And it is btw. much darker than in the photos, because the camera is way more sensitive than the human eye, so I have seen people walking by the sea with the camera LEDs activated on their phones. But I haven't heard complaints.

A Defense of Taiwan with Ukrainian Characteristics

#Ukraine (and #Israel) are demonstrating that free societies with robust innovation centers and the ability and willingness to support decentralized innovation and creativity as well as highly flexible planning and operations can hold off much larger and, in Ukraine’s case, better resourced adversaries. #Taiwan should take heart from this case study while exploring it closely for approaches that could be used, suitably modified, to defend the Republic of #China.

Typhoon?
enter image description here
Yep, typhoon. I don't feel much of the wind around the house, but it's quite different when I walk the few metres to the sea. The actual typhoon only arrived in the evening (bad light, sorry) and when I went out for a few photos then - olala!

We had (have, actually) way more wind than rain this time, which is nice for photos, but I wonder what the storm will take down... (Powerlines, for example. Three times so far...)

Intel CEO Lost A 40% Discount For TSMC's Latest Chip Tech After Taiwan Remarks - Report https://wccftech.com/intel-ceo-lost-a-40-discount-for-tsmcs-latest-chip-tech-after-taiwan-remarks-report/

Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger's comments about the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) manufacturing presence in China soured relations between the two firms and eventually led to Intel missing out on key discounts offered by TSMC, according to a fresh report from Reuters. Intel is currently focusing on manufacturing chips with its 18A manufacturing process, and Reuters' report shares that before Gelsinger's comments, TSMC was offering Intel a whopping 40% discount for its 3 nanometer process manufacturing family. However, the Taiwanese firm decided to withdraw the offer following Gelsinger's remarks.
As per Reuters, in 2021, TSMC had offered Intel a stunning 40% discount for the 3 nanometer technology. Back then, 3 nanometers was TSMC's leading edge chip manufacturing process. One wafer cost $23,000 back then, and TSMC had offered Intel a 40% discount to bring the price to roughly $14,000.
However, back then, Intel was moving full speed ahead to attract US government subsidies for its contract manufacturing and advanced technology push. As part of the effort, Gelsinger was eagerly pointing out the geopolitical risks associated with advanced chip manufacturing being concentrated in Taiwan.
Some of his most controversial remarks, which ignited a back and forth with TSMC's outspoken founder, Dr. Morris Chang, were made at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech Conference in Half Moon Bay, California. At the event, Gelsinger commented that "Taiwan is not a stable place" adding that "Does that make you feel more comfortable or less?"

Inconvenient Truths by Jennifer Zeng on X: "The CCP's People's Liberation Army withdrawing from the Ladakh region (ironically, they even added such heroic music as background for the video), all outposts and fortifications must be dismantled, and all supplies and equipment must be removed. This land will now be entirely under Indian jurisdiction.

India has already announced the establishment of the Ladakh Union Territory. This area is roughly equivalent to three Taiwans, forty Hong Kongs, totaling 90,000 square kilometers.

I can tell you that the CCP has not at all informed the Chinese people about the specifics of this agreement with India to "resolve the border dispute." Anyway, the media is controlled by the CCP, and the public has no right to know, only to be brainwashed and incited.

Things still seem peaceful in Taiwan. However, living near the airport, I can see that our defence planes and military cargo flights are active. And sometimes I wonder how accurate possible Chinese strikes on Taiwan's military facilities will be? In any case, I would say that no matter how much of Taiwan's tax money is spent on weapons, it won't help the people of Taiwan. Well, some Taiwanese might get big money for enabling the weapon's purchase conditions.

China is such a big enemy that fighting it would result in either a quick surrender, starvation, or severe to total destruction of the country. I don't think the U.S. will get involved in fighting China except by selling arms. Thus, I prefer negotiations to playing strong.

So what should be done? For myself, I will focus on reducing my harmful habits, urban gardening, maintaining and developing good relationships with my neighbours, acquaintances, and friends. And for Taiwan, China, Ukraine, Russia, USA, … and everyone on this planet, I wish they could do the same.

A few photos and a video from Kaohsiung's main harbour. My assumption is that the flying containers are empty, otherwise they should withstand the wind a bit better.

We do actually have a fourth day off, which is totally unprecedented, so the mayor had to explain his decision. According to him, about 80k households were without power, some 300k without water (I have both) and many schools were littered with debris. I do wonder though how serious it is, because Taipower goes out even during a typhoon to restore power access.

Anyway, that was a very extraordinary typhoon, but now it's gone. Temperatures dropped to 24C and I actually had to get a blanket for sleeping. Today we should reach 29~30 again...
