4 Free eBook Reader Apps for Android to Get You Out of Your Reading Slump

The image shows a person sitting at a table, reading a book. In the foreground, a smartphone is being used to read an ebook, and the person is holding it with both hands. The ebook shows a just visble open page on the left side of the phone's screen. There is a notebook and pen also on the table. In the background, there is some out-of-focus background that includes what seems to be a desk, and plants, along with other office supplies. The setting appears to be a home office or study.
Google Play Books and the Kindle app are perfectly fine. They keep your books in the cloud (perfect if you switch devices often) and provide a decent enough interface to read for long periods. But they’re only compatible with just one or two file formats. Neither app plays nicely with formats other than EPUB or MOBI. You have to manually upload your files to the cloud to read the books, so these apps aren’t totally offline. Plus, you can’t really fine-tune the reading experience or the app interface like you can with other apps.

For Kindle, you could convert formats in Calibre and send via WhisperSync to your Kindle library, but if you want to stay out of the Kindle ecosystem, then using a standalone app is your alternative.

For the rest of us who find these big tech apps lacking in some way (perhaps you want to read comic books or use a custom font), here’s a list of a few neat eReader apps that I like.

Personally, I use Moon+ Reader Pro. It not only opens the Calibre e-book server directly on my desktop computer, it will also filter that Calibre library by newest or Reading List, and it can use any WebDAV networked folder (e.g. NextCloud) to sync reading progress, highlights, etc across my Android devices. It’s downside really is that it is limited to reading across Android devices, so my desktop computer as well as iPad won’t sync with it.

Your brain can grow from reading and learning – e-books offer the same benefit as paper books

The image shows a wall of books stacked haphazardly, creating a visually stunning texture of various colors and sizes. The foreground is dominated by the densely packed books, while the background is mostly obscured by the sheer volume of literature. The location appears to be an outdoor book market, perhaps in a Spanish-speaking country, judging by some of the visible titles. The titles visible in the image show a mix of classic and contemporary literature, suggesting a wide diversity of literary preferences.
The number of people who read for fun appears to be steadily dropping. Fifty percent of UK adults say they don’t read regularly (up from 42 percent in 2015) and almost one in four young people aged 16 to 24 say they’ve never been readers, according to research by The Reading Agency.

Two regions in the left hemisphere of the brain, which are crucial for language, are different in people who are good at reading and are likely to be shaped by the habit.

Clearly, brain structure can tell us a lot about reading skills. Importantly, though, the brain is malleable—it changes when we learn a new skill or practice an already acquired one. Reading is likely to shape the structure of the left Heschl’s gyrus and temporal pole. So, if you want to keep your Heschl’s thick and thriving, pick up a good book and start reading.

Reading is the same whether you read an e-book or a paper book. The big difference is e-books are generally a lot more accessible, are cheaper, take up less space, and usually have some form of dictionary for quick word lookups.

There is really no excuse not to read: Books are freely available in libraries, many classics are in the public domain, and there are very diverse topics to cover ever possible interest type. Time though is typically the excuse most give, but this is also not very true, if you consider carefully what a 24-hour day looks like. I set aside 30 mins, when going to bed at night, to read. It also has the added bonus of relaxing the mind and readying it for sleep.

this morning i noticed that calibre wasn't able to back up new books into my ebook library any more. i hoped it was just a quirk in the DeDRM plugins that could be mended with a newer version. and so it was. with this version here instead of the older one (i still had 7.something) everything works as it should.

Release v10.0.9 (RC1 for 10.1.0) · noDRM/DeDRM_tools

Since quite a bit of code has changed, this is a beta / RC release before v10.1.0 is released. I don't expect there to be any new bugs, though.

Versions 10.0.4(s), 10.0.5(s) and 10.0.6(s) were rele...

Internet Archive Loses on Appeal

Libraries can lend paper books for free but must pay outrageous fees to publishers to lend scans of paper books.

Remember: the Internet Archive owned paper copies of the books they lent. They scanned the paper book, and only allowed one person to view the scan at one time. Each patron had a limited time to view the book before other patrons had a chance. This is as close to lending the paper copy as possible without the patron actually touching the paper copy.

Publishers were upset because this digital lending gave them no more power, control, or money than they receive from selling paper books to libraries. Publishers rent ebooks to libraries in such a way that they get income from them constantly, and not just one time. Renting ebooks to libraries also allows publishers to spy on readers.

Appeals court seems lost on how Internet Archive harms publishers

Appeals court decision potentially reversing publishers' suit may come this fall.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/06/appeals-court-seems-lost-on-how-internet-archive-harms-publishers/

According to Gratz, most of the questions for IA focused on "how to think about the situation where a particular book is available" from the open library and also available as an ebook that a library can license. Judges said they did not know how to think about "a situation where the publishers just haven't come forward with any data showing that this has an impact," Gratz said.

Kobo’s new repairability push could heat up competition

A hand holding a Kobo ereader showing three books listed. The background is blurry green grass.
“The competition” is probably primarily Amazon Kindle (without a colour model, nor any repairability announced yet). Certainly, consumers score with repairability, and on the face of it, you’d think suppliers lose out. But actually, I may be inclined to buy a far more expensive model if I know I can repair it and keep it going for a few years.

Though I should add after many years of owning a Kobo reader and a few Kindles, not one of them has had any issue at all, and all still work fine. But I get that some people do drop their devices, or things can die after the initial warranty period.

Kobos are now available I see for purchase on Amazon (yes really, just not to my country) as well as Walmart.

Kobos are excellent readers actually and the only thing that counts a bit against them, is they don’t have that vast availability of books that Amazon has. But the Calibre app works perfectly well with being able to buy books elsewhere and push them to your Kobo reader.

Z-Library: New Problems

My private URL for Z-Library no longer works. These were an innovation Z-Library started a year or two ago. You sent an email message to them, and they sent you back custom URLs just for you.

However, I found http://zlib24th6ptyb4ibzn3tj2cndqafs6rhm4ed4gruxztaaco35lka.b32.i2p/ This works just fine, and will be harder to block, but I2P doesn't make connections as easily as the Clearnet, and not even as easily as Onionland. Also, a lot of you don't run I2P.

For now, https://singlelogin.re/ is also working.

Some ebooks I've read since I moved up to Linux Mint 21

  • Red Team Blues, by Cory Doctorow
  • The Lady with the Gun Asks the Questions, by Kerry Greenwood
  • The Every, by Dave Eggers
  • Kaiju Preservation Society, by John Scalzi
  • All Systems Red, by Martha Wells
  • Artificial Condition, by Martha Wells
  • Rogue Protocol, by Martha Wells
  • Exit Strategy, by Martha Wells
  • Obsolescence, by Martha Wells
  • Compulsory, by Martha Wells
  • Home, Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory, by Martha Wells
  • Network Effect, by Martha Wells
  • Fugitive Telemetry, by Martha Wells
  • The Spare Man, by Mary Robinette Kowal
  • The Power, by Naomi Alderman
  • The Lost Cause, by Cory Doctorow
  • The Three Body Problem, by Cixin Liu
  • The Bezzle, by Cory Doctorow
  • Lock In, by John Scalzi
  • Tracers in the Dark, by Andy Greenberg

I have only listed stories I can recommend. They are listed in the order that I read them.

I'm still reading Tracers. I can also recommend his Sand Worm. These are non-fiction.

All the others in the list are fiction.

All the Wells stories listed here are part of The Murderbot Diaries.

The Greenwood book is part of her Phryne Fisher series. I have read all 22 Phryne Fisher novels. Great fun.

The Every is a sequel to The Circle. Don't bother with the movie of The Circle. It has a radically different ending that ruins it.

I can also recommend all the Lady Astronaut stories of Kowal.

Cory is probably my favorite writer these days, if I have one. I certainly read a lot of what he writes.

A few of these are part of series that I haven't finished yet.

I'll probably read System Collapse (Murderbot) next, followed by Head On (sequel to Lock In).
