this morning i noticed that calibre wasn't able to back up new books into my ebook library any more. i hoped it was just a quirk in the DeDRM plugins that could be mended with a newer version. and so it was. with this version here instead of the older one (i still had 7.something) everything works as it should.

ich bin ja mittlerweile fast vollständig dazu übergegangen, ebooks zu lesen. nachdem ich in meiner wohnung keinen platz mehr habe, weitere bücher einzulagern und ich es auch nicht schaffe, alte bücher zu entsorgen, empfand ich elektronische bücher auf einem ebook-reader als gute alternative. die knapp 500 bücher auf dem reader könnte ich niemals in meiner wohnung als physische bücher unterbringen. leider haben ebook-reader auch nachteile. so habe ich einmal zu beginn eines 10-tägigen urlaubs meinen reader in einem restaurant liegen gelassen, woraufhin er natürlich weg war. das war unschön, aber zum glück gabs auf usedom auch noch buchhandlungen. und wie es mir jetzt zum zweiten mal passiert ist, nehmen ebook-reader es mir sehr übel, wenn ich mich auf sie drauf setze. auch wenn es durch ein kissen gedämpft wird, überleben die reader so was nicht. aber, man lebt und lernt (langsam). ab jetzt schaue ich erst einmal unter jedes kissen auf meinem sofa, ob ich dort nicht zufällig einen ebook-reader hingeworfen habe ....

Internet Archive Loses on Appeal

Libraries can lend paper books for free but must pay outrageous fees to publishers to lend scans of paper books.

Remember: the Internet Archive owned paper copies of the books they lent. They scanned the paper book, and only allowed one person to view the scan at one time. Each patron had a limited time to view the book before other patrons had a chance. This is as close to lending the paper copy as possible without the patron actually touching the paper copy.

Publishers were upset because this digital lending gave them no more power, control, or money than they receive from selling paper books to libraries. Publishers rent ebooks to libraries in such a way that they get income from them constantly, and not just one time. Renting ebooks to libraries also allows publishers to spy on readers.

According to Gratz, most of the questions for IA focused on "how to think about the situation where a particular book is available" from the open library and also available as an ebook that a library can license. Judges said they did not know how to think about "a situation where the publishers just haven't come forward with any data showing that this has an impact," Gratz said.

Kobo’s new repairability push could heat up competition

“The competition” is probably primarily Amazon Kindle (without a colour model, nor any repairability announced yet). Certainly, consumers score with repairability, and on the face of it, you’d think suppliers lose out. But actually, I may be inclined to buy a far more expensive model if I know I can repair it and keep it going for a few years.

Though I should add after many years of owning a Kobo reader and a few Kindles, not one of them has had any issue at all, and all still work fine. But I get that some people do drop their devices, or things can die after the initial warranty period.

Kobos are now available I see for purchase on Amazon (yes really, just not to my country) as well as Walmart.

Kobos are excellent readers actually and the only thing that counts a bit against them, is they don’t have that vast availability of books that Amazon has. But the Calibre app works perfectly well with being able to buy books elsewhere and push them to your Kobo reader.

Z-Library: New Problems

My private URL for Z-Library no longer works. These were an innovation Z-Library started a year or two ago. You sent an email message to them, and they sent you back custom URLs just for you.

However, I found http://zlib24th6ptyb4ibzn3tj2cndqafs6rhm4ed4gruxztaaco35lka.b32.i2p/ This works just fine, and will be harder to block, but I2P doesn't make connections as easily as the Clearnet, and not even as easily as Onionland. Also, a lot of you don't run I2P.

For now, https://singlelogin.re/ is also working.

The Greenwood book is part of her Phryne Fisher series. I have read all 22 Phryne Fisher novels. Great fun.

The Every is a sequel to The Circle. Don't bother with the movie of The Circle. It has a radically different ending that ruins it.

I can also recommend all the Lady Astronaut stories of Kowal.

Cory is probably my favorite writer these days, if I have one. I certainly read a lot of what he writes.

A few of these are part of series that I haven't finished yet.

I'll probably read System Collapse (Murderbot) next, followed by Head On (sequel to Lock In).

The Internet Archive kept many books and media lost to time alive for us. So many pieces of lost media, including vintage films, books someone uploaded from their personal collection, political news that got scrubbed off the world, to name a few.

But alas, this is the gardening company deciding to burn down the seed vaults because nobody will buy their packaged seeds.

By the way, if they believed they could get away with it, they would definitely try to outlaw physical libraries as well.
