What Are Google Play System Updates on Android, and Are They Important? And Why You Need to Check Them
Google Play System Updates mainly address security issues, but they aren’t the same as the monthly security patches. Both are responsible for different things. All devices with Android 10 and higher can get a Google Play Security Update, regardless of whether they have the latest security patches.
A good example of where Google Play System Updates could have helped was the Stagefright security bug in 2015. Stagefright was an attack on a multimedia player component in Android. The media framework is one of the 12 components that can be updated through Google Play System Updates. Many devices were never patched to protect against Stagefright because it required a firmware update.
The thing that bugs me about Android, and Windows, is that unlike Linux that runs an update and updates everything in one go, it seems that the Play System updates need to be checked and run, and with Windows it only checks after than application is run. Android does a similar thing where it seems to stop checking for updates to an app, if you have not run it recently.
We really need OS’s to check the operating system and all apps for needed updates.
The other thing with Play System updates is, they queue up if you have not updated, so you may need to run the check a 2nd or a 3rd time until it says there are no new updates.

Mit Zwang in die Cloud
1Password zwingt Nutzer in die Cloud
Weil viele Menschen sich weigern ihre Daten irgendwelchen Clouds anzuvertrauen, kommt nun die Zwangsdigitaliserung. Die neue iPhone- und Android-Version 8 der Passwortverwaltung macht ein Cloud-Abo erforerlich. Alles soll mit 1Password 8 für iOS und Android schneller und besser werden.
Man muss dafür aber einen 1Password-Account in der Cloud haben. Lokale Tresore oder alternative Synchronisationmechanismen sind nicht mehr erlaubt. Schon in der Version 7 war es nicht mehr möglich lokale Tresore neu anzulegen. Für die neue Version gibt es auch keine Möglichkeit mehr die App zu kaufen, es gibt nur noch Abos.
Da können wir nur an die freien und kostenlosen Alternativen wie KeePassX als Passworttresor und VeraCrypt für die Datenscherschlüsselung erinnern. Niemand muss beim Cloud-Wahnsinn mitspielen!

Bei anderen Android Handys konnte ich das entsperren immer ausschalten und Fingerabdruck nur für Entsperrung von Apps benutzen. Damit wäre Fingerabdruck aus meiner Sicht doch ein sehr hohes Sicherheitsrisiko.
Deaktivierung von Fingerabdruck geht auch nur indem ich die Fingerabdrücke alle rauslösche, richtig?

Wir haben stets gedacht, der Finger zeigt an, dass Microsoft mit seinem Windows "nach Hause telefonieren" will. Das war sicher in den letzten Jahrzehnten auch die Entwicklung, die man bei Microsoft beobachten konnte. Doch die aktuellen Nachrichten lassen etwas Licht am Horizont erkennen.
Microsoft hilft bei Linux-Installation
... titelt Heise.de und beschreibt die Möglichkeiten ein Linux System neben oder sogar an Stelle des bestehenden Windows zu installieren. Der alte Hass, der im Ausspruch von Steve Balmer "Linux ist Krebs" gipfelte, scheint vorbei zu sein.
Aktuell beschreibt Microsoft drei Wege für eine Windows Besitzer, um an Linux zu kommen:
- über das Windows-eigene Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL),
- virtualisiert in der Cloud oder
- "Bare metal", also als direkte Installation auf dem Rechner neben dem bestehenden Windows (Dual Boot) oder "an Stelle von Windows".
Zweifellos wäre uns die allerletzte Möglichkeit die liebste ...
Wohin wird diese Entwicklung führen?
Das erste Windows Subsystem für Linux wurde 2016 von Microsoft vorgestellt, inzwischen gibt es eine verbesserte Version 2 - und nun? Microsoft verdient sein Geld mit den Cloud Diensten und das Betriebssystem tritt mehr und mehr in den Hintergrund. Außerdem gibt es fast alle gängigen Anwendungen in gleich guter oder sogar besserer Funktion auch als Open Source. Lediglich die Gamer hängen noch am "Fenster".
Moritz Förster spekuliert auf Heise.de sogar, ob der Konzern irgendwann selbst auf Linux umsteigt, nachdem Android und auch MacOS auf Unix Derivaten beruhen. Auf jeden Fall möchte sich Microsoft die Linux Gemeinde nicht länger zum Feind machen. Für Ärger hatte kürzlich ein zugemauertes Gratis-Upgrade gesorgt. Da wird es Zeit wemigstens die Friedenspfeife zu zeigen und Wege zum Umstieg anzubieten. Langfristig könnte der Konzern damit sogar Geld sparen, denn die Kosten für Entwicklung, Tests und Pflege des eigenen Systems würden dann wegfallen.

Android zonder Google, kan dat?
In smartphoneland zijn er vooral twee smaken: Android (Google) en iOS (Apple). Het grote nadeel van Android: je bent overgeleverd aan de grenzeloze dataverzameling van Google. Apples iOS heeft als nadeel dat het een erg gesloten ‘ecosysteem’ is en iPhones zijn bovendien duur.

Sinds kort experimenteer ik daarom met e/os, een degoogled besturingssysteem voor een aantal Androidtelefoons. Op het eerste gezicht werkt het prima. Installatie van het nieuwe besturingssysteem ging vrijwel zonder hobbels en alle (gratis) apps die ik gebruik waren gewoon beschikbaar, ook van banken, DigiD etc. (Met uitzondering van de NOS Nieuws app.) Voor betaalde apps is wel weer een Googleaccount nodig.
Er zijn meer alternatieve besturingssystemen, maar die lijken meer voor mensen met de nodige digitale vaardigheden te zijn, als ik de instructies lees.

Micay, the lead developer of GrapheneOS accuses the F-Droid project of harrassment:
All I posted before their outburst of bullying and fabricated stories which started in their developer chat room was information on the Android permission model, how F-Droid presents it incorrectly to users and how that harms users by misleading them in 2 different ways about it. I stated we intend to add a disclaimer screen to GrapheneOS on this incorrect information in the F-Droid app if they won't fix it, which has been planned for a long time. F-Droid has multiple serious security and usability issues which they have downplayed and refused to fix. In many cases, F-Droid has downplayed and refused to acknowledge or fix security issues. They've started making posts with the explicit goal of downplaying the issues and misleading people about them. This will only increase the priority of replacing it and moving users away. Engaging in harassment and libel towards people reporting and publishing information about serious issues in their software is one of their main approaches. Several people other than myself have posted blog posts and videos explaining issues, which F-Droid has attacked with lies. [...]
I have irrefutable proof that multiple core F-Droid and Calyx developers (substantial overlap) have engaged in bullying, harassment and libel targeting me to advance their own interests. 1 2
In the aftermath, Rossman, right to repair activist and interpreneur, has to confront the state of distress of the talented developer, who feels isolated and mistreated. The stress reduces the capacity to communicate correctly, leading to even more isolation. On the spectrum of autism and victim of cyberbullying since 2018, in the end Micay's mental wellness is at risk. In addition to contacting the authorities and asking for help, he takes the wise decision to use the social networks in a safer way:
I've stepped down as lead developer of GrapheneOS and will be replaced as a GrapheneOS Foundation director. I'll be ending my use of public social media. I'm unable to handle the escalating level of harassment including recent swatting attacks. There will be a smooth migration.
Cyberbullying can happen at any age and dealing with it can be hard. Wish you a serene recovery.
Lesson learned:
if we want to enjoy free software, we should also keep in consideration the wellness of who develops it. The aggressivity of some open source projects goes beyond healthy competition and we should all see it as the exterior manifestation of a toxic environment. Open source developers should stick as much as possible to a code of conduct, ensuring emotional detatchment and professional behaviour at all times.

I've had a productive weekend updating my other Streamlit apps to include tooltips, more explanations of what they do (even with LaTeX equations in some !), fixing bugs, and making the widgets update correctly in response to user inputs. Apart from the "I Can See My Source From Here" observing planning tool, I'm not sure any of these have much use to anyone beyond the HI radio astronomy community, but they're useful for me. Doing these calculations by hand the whole time when I just need a quick single value is a minor irritant I could do without, and these don't seem to exist anywhere else. There are a few more I'll add in due course, but for now it's back to updating the website first.
The only downside of Streamlit is that the apps have to be accessed every 7 days or they go to sleep. Anybody know a good way to automatically access websites ? Preferably on Android since I always have access to my phone. I can't get the "Automate" app to work correctly (just gives an error when accessing the links). "Macrodroid" nearly works. Opens all the links correctly if the phone is awake, but if the screen is locked, it opens two pages... and bizarrely, only opens the rest once I go into macrodroid and check the macro's error logs.
